I knew nothing about this book or its author when I picked it up. Highly recommend. I laughed a lot, enjoyed the adventures and descriptions of both people and non-human animals. The word ‘lugubrious‘ is now etched into my vocabulary, not due to the book being morose but the words use which I had hardly seen before. I was sorry to learn that Larry‘s then wife was written out of the story, I guess it made it easier to write but still, unfortunate.
1. Yes! I have the same last name as my dad (😉 just kidding). But I really do have the same middle name as my uncle Joe and my cousins Mike and Clint. But theirs is spelled “Lee” and mine is “Leigh.”
2. Only child here. I have a stepbrother and stepsister, but we‘re not close. I haven‘t seen them in close to 20 years.
3. Tagged! I loved the Durrells! Everyone was such a character. #WondrousWednesday

I fell a bit behind. Day 9 - Family
My 🌏 back when they were little beasties and not the teens I have now. 🥺😍
The part of Christmas Day that I am most thankful for is that, at the age of 54, I still get to spend it with these two - my mum and dad. I am privileged to have both my parents in reasonably good health.

This is the generation of my family before me, the last of whom, my Uncle Tony, was laid to rest today. He's kneeling at the front of the photo next to my Auntie Anne on the left. My mum and dad are the couple on the right. My Auntie Jill, at whose 21st birthday this photo was taken, is centre, flanked by my Nana and Grandad, with her husband, my Uncle Chris, seated at the left. All finally together again ❤️
Had the book but never got around to reading it. Scored these at the local book swap a while back.
Even though I‘m almost 2 weeks late finishing this, I just loved it so much! It‘s more a collection of anecdotes as opposed to a continuous story, but all the stories were so charming. Larry‘s relationship with his mother reminded me of stories of my dad (whose name was also Larry) and grandmother. I even found myself googling scorpions with a new appreciation (I mean, I still don‘t want to meet one…but I see now the fascination). And ⬇️
I had so much fun this month with #FoodAndLit #Greece (even if I haven‘t finished the book yet 😬). All I want to do right now is go lounge on a beach in Corfu. But I guess I‘ll have to settle for Greek chicken salad and tzatziki.
Looking forward to Cuba!
3.75/5 ⭐️ I enjoyed all the adventures Gerry went on and all the family commotion. Larry was so dramatic😂 I wish Gerry wouldn't have stole so many animals from their homes, especially the babies.
What did you think of it? Any favorite characters or animals?
#FoodandLit 🇬🇷
I‘m not sure what I expected starting this, but it wasn‘t this. I can‘t remember the last time I laughed so much reading a book. Durrell just have a way of describing things that make them funny.
When Gerald was 10 yrs (in 1935), his family decides to move to Corfu. His family incl. him, his mother and 3 older siblings.
Gerald loves animals and will bring all kinds home with him, not always to his family‘s approval.
I wonder how long it would take to carry my books like that?
#foodandlit #Greece
Quinoa Tabouleh salad with Chicken Shawarma and more of my homemade hummus. And wine because I deserve it. #FoodAndLit #Greece
My first attempt at homemade hummus for #foodandlit #greece. Then I fell down a rabbit hole trying to determine if hummus did in fact originate in Greece. The results were…inconclusive. But the hummus was good 😋.
Hello #FoodandLit Buddy Readers!
How are you enjoying the book? I like all the little adventures Gerry goes on. I'm not so crazy about the bugs but I'm enjoying the other creatures!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I laughed out loud at the precocious little boy and his menagerie. I loved his mother and how she encouraged Gerry's love of anthropology. Wow!!! What a great find @Catsandbooks #FoodandLit @Texreader @hannah-leeloo this reminded me so much of your love for animals. My librarian said it is a show, so I am off to look for it.
Had my #Greece #FoodAndLit book sent to the Amazon Hub at Whole Foods so that I could hit up the olive bar for some Spicy Dolmas. 😋
March's #FoodandLit buddy read is My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell. It's a memoir of a family moving to the Greek Island of Corfu.
This is a casual read-at-your-own-pace buddy read. Anyone is welcome to join! Please let me know if you would like to be tagged in the check-in posts.
A gorgeously written, fun, comforting book. Few books really live up to being equally enjoyable for people of every age but this one truly does! Laugh out loud funny in places, then switching without a breath in between to some absolutely beautiful soft watercolour writing about the landscape and the animals. I want to live in Corfu with the Durrells
@ju.ca.no & i have been reading children‘s classics together & we have been having so much fun with them. 👯♀️
This autobiographical account of Gerry & his family‘s adventures is a complete joyride, a total roller coaster of events. It‘s the first book in a 3 part series.
Gerry (Gerald Durrell) & his family – which includes mother, two elder brothers, & an elder sister – leave England‘s windy, grey August & move to sunny Corfu in Greece. 👇🏽
Tonights plan: reading while the boyfriend watches soccer😁 I actually don‘t mind all this reading time I have during the european championship 😇😂
This book is so funny! The perfect light read for this sunny hot weather😍
„What we all need,“ said Larry, getting into his stride again, „is sunshine.... a country where we can grow.“
Starting my next buddyread with @Tanisha_A tonight!
I can relate so much with this line- as our spring was extremely rainy and grey, I was longing so much for more sun. I‘m happy that summer is finally here☀️
„I can‘t go just like that. I have to arrange something about this house.“
„Arrange? Arrange what, for heaven‘s sake? Sell it.“
(...)
„Don‘t be ridiculous, dear,“ said Mother firmly;“ that‘s quite out of question. It would be madness.“
So we sold the house and fled from the gloom of the English summer, like a flock of migratibg swallows.
What a great start into this book! I think I will enjoy this a lot☺️
Another one from the TBR for the prompt Mediterranean. Supposed to be a charming memoir of a British family moving to Corfu. 😀
#LitsySpringBreak Mediterranean
Gerry‘s tales of growing up on the island of Corfu are delightful and almost too crazy to be true. But the real hero of the book is his Mother, who I can only imagine must have been taking a steady stream of quaaludes in order to take in stride the antics of her moody teenagers while simultaneously allowing her house to be overrun with wild animals as pets 🐸🐶🦅🪱🕷🦂🐍🐢
My family #ForeverNovember #Family
Rereading this delightful twentieth century classic, and one of my all-time favourite! 🤗
#classicschallenge2020 #currentread
For a week or so the wind played with the island, patting it, stroking it, humming to itself among the bare branches. Then there was a lull, a few days' strange calm; suddenly, when you least expected it, the wind would be back. But it was a changed wind, a mad, hooting, bellowing wind that leaped down on the island and tried to blow it into the sea.
January began with reflections from Gerald Durrell (b. Jan. 7, 1925) in his book My Family and Other Animals. During my reading adventure, I discovered “The Durrells in Corfu,” a PBS series available on Amazon Prime Video. If you haven't seen this yet, it is worth checking out. The series is classified a comedy drama, which is also an accurate description of Gerald Durrell's writing style.
My mother didn‘t know what to buy me for my birthday (Seriously... 🤷🏻♀️) and gave me cash. So I‘ve spent it on a six month subscription to #Bookishly #CoffeeAndBookClub - vintage books and a pouch of coffee; my idea of Heaven.
#Movember #humannature
Light, breezy and old-fashioned in the best way, this memoir of a family‘s move to Corfu in the 30‘s is just so charming. Part nature writer‘s love letter to an island, part study of the eccentric locals and his family through the eyes of a creature-obsessed 10 yo boy, this book captured my heart. I particularly loved Roger, the old family dog, who is anthropomorphized into a curious little chap and loyal companion to Gerry.

- Completed Brideshead Revisited and loved it. Can‘t believe I had never read it. So my jam!
- 2/3 of the way through my re-read of a favorite book. Trying When God was a Rabbit on audio. Unusually the author narrates it herself, but then again she‘s an actress so it makes sense. Really enjoying it.
- 1/3 through my new read (tagged book). This classic NonFic is delightful! Set in Corfu, between the wars, it‘s fab so far.

I love me a story set on an island, whether sunny and idyllic or stormy and bleak! I‘ve included my favorites here, plus my current (tagged) read which is turning out to be completely delightful💕 😍🌴💨🌊
A quick update on #20booksby2020
@megnews .... So far 12/20.....
Starting the tagged book today.... I have a feeling it‘s going to totally be my jam! 😊🤞💕📚
#weeklyforecast @Cinfhen
-Halfway through Brideshead and loving it....
-Think I‘m going to start When God was a Rabbit on audio as my #pop19 favorite re-read.... I always like to change format when I do a reread...🎧
- Next up I think I‘m going to read the tagged book. Another between the wars time period which I adore, this time with a setting of my favorite place in the world, the Greek Islands.... and perfect for #NonFictionNovember 💕😊📚
Category is: Greece!
Back in England after a gorgeous trip to Croatia, but kind of wishing I was somewhere else 😉
England is so cold and grey, it‘s hard not to daydream about Spain and Greece and all the other sunny places 😭 PS - has anyone watched The Durrells? It‘s fantastic.
#anglophileapril #sofaraway
The Greek islands are my favorite place in the world, and I‘ve been meaning to read this classic about an eccentric British family in Corfu for forever!
@Cinfhen @emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola @Mdargusch
I love sitting outside in beautiful gardens to read!
I read this book many moons ago as a prescribed book in highschool. A couple of years ago my dad bought a copy at our church "bazaar" and naturally it ended on the #TBRShelve and now its time finally came...only to find that this copy was in fact also a highschool prescribed copy (not my one though). The entire book has notes and scribbles and explanations in Afrikaans and I absolutely love it and I wonder...why was it not handed back? ?????
A story of Gerald Durrell when he was 10 years old, and his family‘s four-year migration from England to Corfu in the 1930s. There he developed his passion for wildlife, local flora and fauna, and animals play an important part in the tale. Still on my #tbr.
