A Memory of Light
A Memory of Light | Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson
'And it came to pass in those days, as it had come before and would come again, that the Dark lay heavy on the land and weighed down the hearts of men, and the green things failed, and hope died.' - Charal Drianaan te Calamon, The Cycle of the Dragon. In the Field of Merrilor the rulers of the nations gather to join behind Rand al'Thor, or to stop him from his plan to break the seals on the Dark One's prison - which may be a sign of his madness, or the last hope of humankind. Egwene, the Amyrlin Seat, leans toward the former. In Andor, the Trollocs seize Caemlyn. In the wolf dream, Perrin Aybara battles Slayer. Approaching Ebou Dar, Mat Cauthon plans to visit his wife Tuon, now Fortuona, Empress of the Seanchan. All humanity is in peril - and the outcome will be decided in Shayol Ghul itself. The Wheel is turning, and the Age is coming to its end. The Last Battle will determine the fate of the world. . . For twenty years The Wheel of Time has enthralled more than forty million readers in over thirty-two languages. A Memory of Light brings this majestic fantasy creation to its richly satisfying conclusion. Working from notes and partials left by Robert Jordan when he died in 2007, and consulting with Jordan's widow, who edited all of Jordan's books, established fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson has recreated the vision Jordan left behind.

1. There are many people that if I were to describe my feelings for them might fit the description of a personal hero, but I shy away from using such a label. Unfortunately I‘ve come to regret the ones I‘ve labeled as such in the past. In all honesty (as vain as I‘m sure it sounds) the person that is most likely to be my hero is myself.
2. This entire series has numerous heroes in it, so I chose the final book.

Bk8 of July & the 14th& final book of The Wheel Of Time is done! According to Sanderson, Jordan wrote the actual ending before his death, what an ending it was. The whole world is being overrun by Trollics, Fades & other shadow spawn, directed by the remaining Forsaken. Elayne is General of the armies, Perrin fights with the wolves, Mat becomes Battle Leader while Nynaeve, Moiraine & Rand head to Shayol Gul. Still wish Jordan wrote it👇

Lizpixie But Sanderson did a great job with what he had. A total must read for any fantasy fan. #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2023 #ChunksterChallenge2023 1y

"But it was an ending."

Indeed! I thought this book was a very fitting end to The Wheel of Time. Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson did an excellent job tying up all the story lines of the series, some reaching all the way back to Book 1. The book is almost entirely dedicated to The Last Battle, played out on two fronts. The only issue I have is with one group of combatants. You are left asking, "Where did these people come from?"

The Wheel of Time is far from perfect. It‘s full of stereotypes, offputting gender dynamics, and so much padding that Jordan‘s original 3-book vision turned into a 14-book behemoth.

It‘s also packed with stellar characters, intricate worldbuilding, cool magic, and intense action. And it ends SO BLOODY WELL.

I love it differently than I did when I discovered it at 12, but I DO love it. I love it very, very much.

5 stars for the epic conclusion.

I made Nigella‘s cranberry upside down cake to use up some more cranberries and get some more time with A MEMORY OF LIGHT. 42-hour audiobooks take forever when you can‘t go for long-ass walks with them.

This cake always stymies me. It‘s delicious, but the cranberries WILL NOT stay where they‘re put. They always float up into the batter. I guess Canadian cranberries must be more buoyant than British cranberries or something. #audiobaking

BookNAround Do you flour the cranberries prior to folding them in? I find when I skip that step, everything sinks worse than when I do it. 3y
xicanti @BookNAround they get a coating of melted butter and sugar, which also forms a delicious crust for the cake. I might try flour in the future to see if it helps, though since the cake is baked upside down I‘ve got more of a rising issue than a sinking issue. 3y
xicanti @BookNAround oh! I should also mention they aren‘t folded in. They sit on the bottom of the pan and the cake batter gets poured on top of them. 3y
BkClubCare I have a crustless cranberry pie recipe that turns out awesome for me. Will send to you! 💖 (edited) 3y

I crept a bit further into A MEMORY OF LIGHT while I worked on the cuff for Fox Mitten #2. I‘ve still got over half the book left, but it feels weird to think of how close I am to the end of this reread. It‘s been a journey for sure.

It‘s also been really interesting to listen to the books this time around. Jordan‘s got a lot of names that LOOK different but SOUND really similar, with Domani and damane being the most glaring. #audioknitting

It's tough to review something like WoT without spoilers. All I can say is that 99.9% of this book was - to borrow Thom Merrilin's word - "exquisite". 14 books might be too long for a series (I've made the case myself that WoT could probably stand to have a couple books' worth of padding shaved off), but there's no doubt all that time spent among this world and these characters paid off in the end. There were as many deaths as there were...?

The_Penniless_Author ...miraculous escapes, and every one of them meant something. This book came so close to being a perfect conclusion, only...just as it was about to stick the landing...that epilogue...I just don't know. Let's just say there's one big decision I would have made very differently, and it's hard not to wish Sanderson/Jordan had done the same. Still, it hardly ruins what came before. In the end, I loved this series, flaws and all. 3y
The_Penniless_Author @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I'd be interested to know what you thought about the ending, especially the fate of a certain you know who 😄 I would be more specific and use spoiler warnings, only I'm an idiot and can't figure out how to do that in the comments using the phone app. 🤣 3y
paulfrankspencer My brother-in-law has started the series, and I've been very curious to hear your thoughts ahead of his. This series is certainly not on my shortlist of to-reads, but I do hold the series in high regard based on its general reputation and your reviews. 3y
See All 7 Comments
The_Penniless_Author @paulfrankspencer Obviously, this format doesn't lend itself to in-depth critiques. I could probably cobble together a dissertation from all the thoughts swimming around in my head right now. Suffice it to say that all the negative criticism I've read about WoT is rooted in truth, while completely missing the larger point about what makes the series great. It's an elemental story, basically a dramatization of another Age's Book of Revelation. 3y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘m so glad you finished it!! 🥰 On my phone there‘s a little skull and crossbones that I can click to mark spoiler messages. The ending was bittersweet. It certainly wasn‘t what I was expecting. I had actually prepared myself for Rand to die. I think overall I‘m happy with it, but I‘d be happier if he wasn‘t wandering the world alone… 😅 I remember I hugged the book and had a HUGE book hangover for months afterwards. 🤓 3y
The_Penniless_Author @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I didn't even notice the skull next to the send button 🤣 I have to say, if Rand had to live I'm kind of glad it was anonymously. But still, as the end was approaching and I assumed he would die, I kept imagining a final paragraph, set far into the Fourth Age, after the events of the books had already begun slipping into legend, mentioning some huge monument of a man and woman side by side, which of course would be...👇 3y
The_Penniless_Author @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm ...Rand and Egwene, bringing their story full circle back to when they were kids in Emond's Field and were destined to marry. In fact, I became so convinced this was a perfect final scene that I was almost shocked when it didn't happen 😂 Anyway, my book hangover is in full swing. I may take a break from reading for a week or two. 3y

When you're writing an 11,000-page epic, it's only right that The Last Battle gets a 217-page chapter all to itself! I'm torn between wanting to plow ahead and read the whole thing tonight and taking my time to savor these last few hundred pages. I've been totally immersed in this series for the last several months. I think my next book will need to be something about coping with loss 😂

The_Penniless_Author @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I think I'm more scared than excited, based on some of the early reviews I've read, but looking forward to it either way! 😄 3y
The_Penniless_Author @AmyG I would recommend it in a heartbeat, but it IS a commitment - 14 books, something like 11,000 pages. It can feel bloated and drag at times, but I also think the excessive detail is one the series' great strengths. Halfway through book 13, I feel like I know every inch of this world and every character in it. I think it will be impossible to capture that within the confines of a TV show, but of course I'll be watching 😂 3y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Lol, I‘m a bit of both myself. But I think I‘m still leaning towards the more optimistic side. I‘ve stayed clear of any early reviews, so I‘ll be going into it fresh. 😅 3y

What can be said of this final entry in The Wheel of Time? Well, it is perhaps the perfect cap on this series. Full of action, heartbreak, terror, and hope, it gives the reader the closure we deserve, along with the pulse-pounding suspense and action we wanted.

aa_guer2021 It was a very intimidating undertaking by Sanderson after the passing of the main author and it being the end of the series. Thankfully he left notes behind. I distinctly remember definitely not being disappointed! 3y

After reading 4.4 million words over 10 months, I finally finished book 14 of Robert Jordan‘s fantasy megaseries “Wheel of Time.” The series is bloated, hugely ambitious, totally inconsistent and outrageously entertaining. If you want to escape into a richly detailed high fantasy series for months or years and your imagination is still functional, go for it. I needed an escape this year, and I‘m glad I gave it a try.

The_Penniless_Author Cool, I'm attempting this now and just finished the first book. Funnily enough, everything you said about the series as a whole applies to the first book as well. It was messy, inconsistent, but totally entertaining. I'm excited to keep going. 4y
Bigwig I hope you enjoy it! I raced through the first seven volumes, and like most readers I found eight through ten to be a slog. If you make it through, though, eleven through fourteen are a complete blast and definitely worth the commitment. (edited) 3y
llcoolnate sounds like a challenge and a half! 3y
Bigwig Definitely. I‘m selective about fantasy series because so many are derivative or lacking that special something. This one was imperfect but I also jumped out of my chair with excitement during the final book. Unforgettable fun. 3y

After 5 years reading this series of chunksters—I finished the final volume! Jordan has his writing tics that annoy me, but he is a fantastic world-builder. I‘m impressed with the depth of character growth he achieved with some of his characters. I wish a few threads had been tied up more completely, but overall: wow. As this quote says: words like epic & momentous are nearly worn out—but entirely appropriate. A fitting end to a truly epic series.

Tea is brewing and I‘m about to start in again for #13inthree! Gonna make a dent in Memory of Light today. My husband is so impatient for me to finish the series... every time he finds me reading something else, he whispers “Memory of Liiiiiiiiighhhhht” at me as if a “subliminal” message will put me back on track. 😂

I do love a good #BookishMap, and while the Wheel of Time books have a good one, I usually find Tolkien maps to be my favorites. #ReadingResolutions

#GetMovin #day16 #IBelieveInAThingCalledLove I know this high fantasy series is probably the last books that come to mind when you think Love, but in the end of this epic saga, it‘s the love of three women that is the catalyst that saves the world. Rand Al‘Thor is prophesied to save the world but it‘s his three wives, Elayne(Andoran Queen)Aviendha(Aiel Wise One)& Min(Seer) that keep him sane & on the right path to keeping the world in the light.

Cinfhen Hmmm, Sounds interesting😍 7y
