Cyrano is everything I didn't realize I needed right now as there's different elements that caught my attention, kept me reading at a slower pace to keep up with the older English but I was captivated by it.

It's a short play that has a full cast of characters each with a different voice and tone and having read this play, it's nice to see the intro at the beginning to set the scene and it let my imagination run.

Just watched "Cyrano," based on the play based on the life of Cyrano de Bergerac. The story, about a man who, believing himself worthy of love because of his looks, writes letters to his love for another man to claim, has been adapted numerous times. I really enjoyed this musical version, though it seemed to lack. It wasn't funny enough to be farcical and there wasn't any dramatic urgency until the third act. Dinklage definitely carried the film.

vonnie862 I too kind of liked the movie too but there was something missing. And aww...Wishbone!!!! 13mo
TieDyeDude @vonnie862 I remember that Wishbone episode! Funny the things that hide in your brain until they are triggered. 13mo

The 9th in my Modern Library Classics Challenge for the year (I'm a month behind). I'd not read the play before but of course know the story - who doesn't? I wasn't prepared for just how excellent the language was, and how captivating it would be. Sorry I waited so long to read it. My copy is 93 years old and in pretty delicate shape. I read a few pages, then turned to an online copy to finish it.

Full review: https://bit.ly/rvw-Cyrano

psalva This is a favorite of mine which I would really like to revisit. The history of the translation which you write about is interesting. Finally, I got a copy of Cyrano de Bergerac‘s Voyage to the Moon last year which I‘m curious about reading. 2y

All right #LMPBC #GroupV I‘m leaning towards the tagged book for my contribution to the group, and here are several other choices I have on hand. Anyone have any opinions either way? What say you?
@BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @TheAromaofBooks @fredthemoose

fredthemoose Sounds great to me! 3y
TheAromaofBooks I'm good with the tagged book. I also would love to read Scarlet Pimpernel as it has been soooo long since I read it in high school!! A couple of the others are a smidge on the long side for #LMPBC - generally, less than 400ish pages is recommended to help make sure everyone can read it in a month!!! 😊 3y
jimfields3 @TheAromaofBooks That was a very close second for me, so I‘ll choose that one, barring any objections from @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks and @fredthemoose of course. 3y
fredthemoose Also sounds great! 3y
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @jimfields3 Would love to read The Scarlet Pimpernel! And I WILL be watching Looney Tunes‘s “The Scarlett Pumpernickel” to commemorate. 😂😂 Great choices! 3y

Have you seen the musical adaptation of Cyrano? I ❤️ it. It‘s less of a comedy than the play, & I miss the development of the friendships. However, it remains a beautiful adaptation of the core story. I adore the musical element; Roxanne‘s songs are perfect. The best song of the film tho is of 3 cadets pre-battle. If you haven‘t read the play, do! The English translation is witty & fun. Even my HNR LA 10 students love the play. #playtoscreen

vivastory I have been meaning to check this out. I love Peter Dinklage (I was familiar w/ him from Station Agent before GoT so he's not permanently fixed in my mind as Tyrion 😅) 3y

I've read this in French so maybe the experience was different if you read a translation of this play. The story has become one of my favorite plays to read and it's also what got me into reading more romance so I definitely recommend checking it out. If you like this play, Netflix has actually made a modern version of it named The Half of It which I absolutely adored so check that one out also.

rubyslippersreads I ❤️ the version with Kevin Kline and Jennifer Garner. 4y

Cyrano de Bergerac is a swashbuckling poet with a monstrous nose—a character who makes more enemies than friends and who practices swordplay and wordplay at the same time, composing poems against pride and puncturing pomposity with a pun.
Cyrano‘s nose is his red badge of courage and the symbol of his nobility and absurdity. This is why Cyrano is the quintessential romantic hero...

#bookreport & #weeklyforecast @Cinfhen

Feels about as accurate as most forecasts...
Finished:
Traitors - excellent standalone fantasy
The Dutch House - my first Ann Patchett, lived up to the hype, excellent audio
Progress:
Genji - got 5% further
Cyrano (play) - loving so far
Broken Stars (Chinese short sff in trans) - first story was so good

Next week, plan to continue with Genji and Cyrano, and start The Dispossessed by LeGuin.

Cinfhen I heard Tom Hanks was an awesome narrator 5y
llwheeler @Cinfhen definitely! 5y
janeycanuck Try Bel Canto next, if you‘re looking for another Patchett to try. It‘s my fav that I‘ve read by her. 5y

Welp, I'm still crushing HARD on Noah Centineo (😍) and now there's a SECOND Netflix movie featuring him to watch. Sierra Burgess is a Loser, a modern retelling of the Cyrano de Bergerac story. I don't love it as much as To All the Boys I've Loved Before (you'd die if you knew how many times I've watched that one at this point 😂) but Noah is still as adorbs as can be *sigh*

I had to talk about one of the greatest love story of all time. It's well written, funny and sad ... I won't say too much. Cyrano is one of the most likeable characters I've met (and I've met a lot of them). A #frenchclassic that is worth the reading!

I'm doing a shorter reading challenge from 2015, and one of the challenges is a classic romance. I'm only through act 1 and I'm enjoying it, I think? I don't know. The beginning was a bit confusing. So much was happening right away.

I just watched this movie adaptation, and it was as beautiful as I had hoped it would be. It's tragically romantic and packed full of lines that can be quoted like Shakespeare. -- I do plan to learn a few of them to hopefully use in my lifetime. -- So the script is now on my horrifyingly long reading list, and I think I'll watch this movie again a couple hundred times before Christmas.
