A speedy re read in time for group on Thursday!

Such a timeless classic and so current in its themes and concerns. I have no desire to watch any film or tv adaptations although I hear there are good versions...

mandarchy My son became obsessed with the Tripods when he was 7 (4 years ago). We listened to Jeff Wayne's musical version over and over, (prog rock and super cheez). I read a version of it that was redesigned for low level readers to him and he was unfazed by it. Scared me!. Sometimes he gets the theme song in his head and hums it. Only his mom knows what the H.E double hockey sticks noise he's making. 2y

Re reading this classic for book club.
It still resonates so much, the story as a whole and the way in which the narrator accounts the war.

An account from an unnamed man‘s encounter with the aggresive martians who invade London.

A quick read that kept my attention.

I'd remembered, of course, that tWotW is stridently anti-imperialism and anti-militarism, but I'd forgotten that Wells also introduces themes of animal welfare and, through the lens of the Artilleryman's fantasies of a Brave New World and the Narrator's disgusted rejection of his ideas, he takes a swipe at racism, eugenics and supremacist ideology. All of which serves his larger anti-imperialist theme. Deservedly a classic book.

Zoes_Human And what a wonderful cover on that edition!!! 3y
DivineDiana Themes of animal welfare and more. 🤔 Never had a desire to read this, and now I do. Stacked. (edited) 3y
Bookwomble @DivineDiana Disclaimer: The animal welfare angle is rather "blink and you'll miss it", but it is definitely, and intentionally, there. ? 3y

"We must remember what ruthless and utter destruction our own species has wrought, not only upon animals, such as the vanished bison and dodo, but upon its own inferior races. The Tasmanians, in spite of their human likeness, were entirely swept out of existence in a war of extermination waged by European immigrants, in the space of fifty years. Are we such apostles of mercy as to complain if the Martians warred in the same spirit?"

Bookwomble Well, the language of White supremacy is obviously problematical today, but I wonder what impact Wells' reflections upon European colonialism and genocide might have had upon his original readers? The whole book is a development of this theme of, "If you are horrified at the prospect of England being colonised by 'Superior Beings', what does that tell you about the moral justifications for British genocidal colonialism?" 3y

"At most, terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet, across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us." ???

Bookwomble Although the phrasing is different in the opening monologue of Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds" concept album, I can't not hear this passage in Wells' original prose other than in Richard Burton's richly melifluous Welsh-inflected tones, and then it's the same for the whole book! ???????? 3y

🎧 Martians land on Earth. Cool, right? Nope they‘re here to wipe out humanity!

I still remember the sounds the heat rays made in the old movie!

Told in 1st person so you feel like you‘re on the ground in England when this happens! I did notice that the book contains block by block action so it would be nice if there was a map of “England” with the book.

How apropos that the Earth protects itself with a great twist at the end! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jari-chan I loved how the story ended! 😁 3y
Twainy @Jari-chan agreed!! Even knowing the ending I want to watch the movie again, even the new one. 3y
mandarchy Does the audio book have sounds? Like sound effects or music? When my son was 7 he became obsessed with Jeff Wayne's musical version. I read the junior version to him. 3y

Honestly I was really impressed with how well this book stands up 123 years later. It's progressive for its time (there are female characters!) and HG Wells seems to be the rare white male anti-imperialist in 19th century England. So I recommend. Not as scary as I'm sure it was when it came out, but pretty gruesome and certainly interesting from a literary perspective as the first alien invasion story.

TheNeverendingTBR Completely agree with you, it's so good 4y

Nov 29 Prompt Old movies - There are some old movies out there I just love. Let‘s show some old movies our love and gratitude. Many have given me joy and laughs through the years. Old is relative here. Pick whatever suits your fancy.
Gratitude
1. Christmas Vacation
2. African Queen
3. War of the Worlds original
4. White Christmas
5. Miracle on 34th Street original
6. Desk Set
7. Breakfast at Tiffany‘s
8. The Addams Family

TheAromaofBooks Growing up our Friday night movie night was so frequently comprised of old flicks that a friend of mine who used to come regularly thought that our tv was black & white! 😂 4y

Sharpeipup Good selection! 4y
TheAromaofBooks We had a roof-top antenna that you could turn (to get better reception for different channels) but pulling a rope in the upstairs closet, which was very far from the television, so basically you had to have one person watching the TV to see if the reception was improving, one person yelling the “better/worse“ message from the bottom of the stairs, & one person cranking the antenna 😂 4y
jb72 @TheAromaofBooks Yep I remember those too. Or you‘d be the one kid holding the rabbit ears in place so everyone could watch TV. 4y

I watched the movie first when I was little (6yo, I think) and now I got to read the book.
Well, first I was shocked at how small it was, but it is a really good thriller ! I was expecting something more on the horror side (since the movie had literally given me nightmares🙃).
It got me questioning my morality at times, since I found the main character too soft sometimes.
A must read, as well!

2.) Necroscope. Let's face it the TOR horror covers are simply the best! 🦇

I forgot to post that I finished the book. I really did enjoy it even with a few yuck moments (the part with the dog). It‘s definitely a timeless alien story. The story makes a person think about what she would do in such a time of crisis. We can only hope the aliens are friendly.

Ch 7-12: these next few chapters really pick up the pace. The seriousness of the Martians arrival seems to be ignored partly because of how fast/slow the news travels. In today‘s time, it would be all over the news in a nanosecond of their arrival. The narrator has had several brushes with death. What would you do? Would you want a glimpse? Or would you bunker down and await?

Cortg I‘d get the hell out of town and set up camp far, far away! 4y
ElizaMarie So.. I was gonna post a question about this very thing! So I am glad you did! But yeah. I think I would probably bunker down. I think about how we have had “suggestions“ to flee for hurricanes but never an actual order. I worry about where would I go? Also wouldn't try to catch a glimpse or anything. Maybe hide out in home? Basement? (we don't have basements in my part of the country but yeah) 4y

@jb72 , @Cortg , @AkashaVampie, @katy4peas

jb72 Yes I do. Personally I think it is narrow minded to think we are the only beings in the entire galaxy or universe. And they may or may not be advanced as we think. 4y
TheAromaofBooks I think yes. They may not be zooming about on spaceships visiting Earth secretly, but I do find it almost impossible to believe that our planet is the only one with life in the entirety of space. 4y

Literary_Siren Holy pricey! I wasn‘t expecting that but I will definitely get one at least. Or maybe one per year. When you think about the time and effort that goes into it, the price isn‘t that bad. 😂 4y
SamanthaMarie @Gina It is sold out now 😭 how much was it?! So I can save for when there is more hahaha! 4y
Gina @Literary_Siren Yeah it is but it makes me happy everytime I look at it. 4y
Gina @SamanthaMarie between $100-$200. The one I bought is handmade to order. Here is the direct link... https://www.etsy.com/listing/707491700/japan-old-town-minialley-booknook 4y
SamanthaMarie @Gina It is seriously cool. I can see why it costs a good chunk!!! 4y

That glorious moment when you score a 1964 copy of TWOTW illustated byJoe Mugnaini for $40 cuz it has a teeny dent and an ex libris sticker on it but otherwise is in mint condition. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I read this book years ago and really liked it. The new adaptation on Epix doesn‘t get great reviews on IMDB, but I enjoyed it. One reviewer said that people would love the show if it wasn‘t titled War of the Worlds, and I get that. I‘m hoping for a second season!

I'd never read any H.G. Wells until that weekend there, I read this, The Invisible Man and The Island of Dr. Moreau; this was the best of the three ~ it was fantastic! 👾

Thank god I‘m done with all HG Wells‘s books on the list of #1001books to read before you die. I loathed them all, definitely not for me. Of the five books I read by him, this was probably the most annoying.

You were right to bail, @Megabooks 😉
#ClassicsChallenge2020

Hooked_on_books I‘m impressed you made it through all five! I don‘t think I could have persevered. Maybe 2. 😆 5y
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books They were short at least 😂 5y
Megabooks Lol!! You persevered! I‘d by you a beer/glass of wine if I were in Amsterdam. 😁🍻 5y

Billypar I've never read any of his: the only one I was curious about was The Invisible Man, but I presume that was one of the five and also loathed 😁 5y
Suet624 Come to think of it, I‘ve never read anything by him. Apparently I‘ve been spared. (edited) 5y
Reviewsbylola Yup definitely skipping HG! Thanks for confirming. 😂 5y
Reviewsbylola Funny though, the book I‘m reading now just had a chapter that talked about this book! 5y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I‘d love that! 🍻 5y
BarbaraBB @Billypar Absolutely 😂 5y
BarbaraBB @Suet624 No need at all 😀 5y
BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola What does your book think of this one?! 5y
Reviewsbylola Well it‘s pretty funny actually, the protagonist and her husband turn on the radio and learn that there‘s an alien invasion. They freak out and barricade themselves in their basement only to discover that it was just an excerpt of the book being read over the radio. 🤣 5y
scowler1 That's hilarious, I love Wells, born in the wrong era for certain. My kids do call me Victorian Dad! 5y
BarbaraBB @scowler1 Victorian dad, that is hilarious! But you‘re probably not the only one who loves him. Five (!) books of his on the 1001 to read before you die must mean something 😀 5y
scowler1 Meh, read what you like. I only judge people who don't read 😒 5y
vivastory I'm impressed you stuck with it. I admit, I love HG Wells. 5y
BarbaraBB @vivastory I know you do. I am impressed by that! 5y

This ended up being really neat. And now I can tell my other half that I've read it! This is one of the few books he had read that I had not 😂😂

🎧 this is such an old radio play with a cast of characters from Star Trek! It was nice to hear Leonard Nimoy‘s voice. I enjoyed it & could pick out 4 actor‘s voices. There‘s an interview with Dr Crusher (Gates McFadden) at the end. Fun listen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️2/3

Visited Magic City Books in Tulsa and loved it! Such an excellent selection. (My three-year-old took this pic!)
