Re reading this classic for book club.
It still resonates so much, the story as a whole and the way in which the narrator accounts the war.
An account from an unnamed man‘s encounter with the aggresive martians who invade London.
A quick read that kept my attention.
I'd remembered, of course, that tWotW is stridently anti-imperialism and anti-militarism, but I'd forgotten that Wells also introduces themes of animal welfare and, through the lens of the Artilleryman's fantasies of a Brave New World and the Narrator's disgusted rejection of his ideas, he takes a swipe at racism, eugenics and supremacist ideology. All of which serves his larger anti-imperialist theme. Deservedly a classic book.
"We must remember what ruthless and utter destruction our own species has wrought, not only upon animals, such as the vanished bison and dodo, but upon its own inferior races. The Tasmanians, in spite of their human likeness, were entirely swept out of existence in a war of extermination waged by European immigrants, in the space of fifty years. Are we such apostles of mercy as to complain if the Martians warred in the same spirit?"
"At most, terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet, across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us." ???
🎧 Martians land on Earth. Cool, right? Nope they‘re here to wipe out humanity!
I still remember the sounds the heat rays made in the old movie!
Told in 1st person so you feel like you‘re on the ground in England when this happens! I did notice that the book contains block by block action so it would be nice if there was a map of “England” with the book.
How apropos that the Earth protects itself with a great twist at the end! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

Honestly I was really impressed with how well this book stands up 123 years later. It's progressive for its time (there are female characters!) and HG Wells seems to be the rare white male anti-imperialist in 19th century England. So I recommend. Not as scary as I'm sure it was when it came out, but pretty gruesome and certainly interesting from a literary perspective as the first alien invasion story.
I come to see more and more that I don't care much for sci-fi written by men... especially when they wrote it 100 years ago.

A classic and a coffee morning.
Finally getting to The War of the Worlds.
I watched the movie first when I was little (6yo, I think) and now I got to read the book.
Well, first I was shocked at how small it was, but it is a really good thriller ! I was expecting something more on the horror side (since the movie had literally given me nightmares🙃).
It got me questioning my morality at times, since I found the main character too soft sometimes.
A must read, as well!
How I went this long with out reading The War of the Worlds I have no idea but I finally did and I really did enjoy it.
Finished another book! It was a fun listen!

#3Books That gave me cover crush! 🥰
1.) My Best Friends Exorcism. Love it, the fact it's designed as a VHS and has an 80s vibe drew me right in; read it recently and enjoyed it - looking forward to my next Grady Hendrix read! 📼
2.) Necroscope. Let's face it the TOR horror covers are simply the best! 🦇
3.) The War of the Worlds. Loved this book so much....and another gorgeous TOR cover! ⚡

I forgot to post that I finished the book. I really did enjoy it even with a few yuck moments (the part with the dog). It‘s definitely a timeless alien story. The story makes a person think about what she would do in such a time of crisis. We can only hope the aliens are friendly.
I‘ve fallen way behind on book bingo so maybe next month I can accomplish a bingo!
Gonna watch the movie with Tom Cruise

@ElizaMarie @jb72 - When I saw this post I started laughing, thinking about our comments the other day about extraterrestrial life... maybe THIS is the reason we haven't actually see aliens personally! 😂
Another “free“ book for this #BookspinBingo .. I really need to actually read some f the non-free books as I am running out of “free“ spaces! Anyway I am gonna get a bingo soon.. I can feel it!
So I finished this one yesterday. Wow! Can you say intense!!! I loved it (thank you again for wanting to do this as a buddy read -- I am loving these classic buddy reads !) Anyway I truly enjoyed this book and will recommend for others to read it when they can! Also just listened to the radio version (original 1938 broadcast!) I can see why people blew their minds! https://youtu.be/Xs0K4ApWl4g

#waroftheworlds This was not what I expected (I thought-radio broadcast,) but I did enjoy it! I listened to an 80‘s version and I think I need to read it because I feel like I missed some detail listening to the audio. I love how influential this book is and I kept thinking how World War Z has similar undertones in it‘s writing style. I‘m looking forward to your thoughts! #ReadingWithTBRCrew

So not fully book related but.. When I saw this quote it made me think... What would your last meal be? (presuming that you know this is the last meal). I am thinking street tacos, super spicy, with those boracho beens - lots of lime and a nice ice-y Mexican coke.

Ch 7-12: these next few chapters really pick up the pace. The seriousness of the Martians arrival seems to be ignored partly because of how fast/slow the news travels. In today‘s time, it would be all over the news in a nanosecond of their arrival. The narrator has had several brushes with death. What would you do? Would you want a glimpse? Or would you bunker down and await?
Question 3: Who is your favorite alien? What did you think of this description?
(Super scary! Like creepy! But Stitch is my fav!!)

So question #2: let‘s say aliens do land on earth? Who among you‘all are out there inspecting the crash scene???
(When I was younger I would be all for it it, now as I‘m older I‘m all for letting professionals deal with it)

Ch 1 - 6: my copy is from 1974 - the original was serialized in 1897 and brought to hardcover in 1898. I watched the original movie in black and white as a kid in the 70s. It scared the 💩 out of me. In high school, I got to listen to the original radio broadcast on a record player. @ElizaMarie posted the question: do you believe in aliens? Short answer: yes I do. ⬇️
So .. mini discussion question :) do you‘all believe in extraterrestrial life forms?

♡♡♡I splurged on a book alley from Etsy♡♡♡
The newest acquisition to my personal library. I experience pure joy when browsing through this gorgeous reprint of the ultimate Syfy classic of all time!
That glorious moment when you score a 1964 copy of TWOTW illustated byJoe Mugnaini for $40 cuz it has a teeny dent and an ex libris sticker on it but otherwise is in mint condition. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I read this book years ago and really liked it. The new adaptation on Epix doesn‘t get great reviews on IMDB, but I enjoyed it. One reviewer said that people would love the show if it wasn‘t titled War of the Worlds, and I get that. I‘m hoping for a second season!
I'd never read any H.G. Wells until that weekend there, I read this, The Invisible Man and The Island of Dr. Moreau; this was the best of the three ~ it was fantastic! 👾
Thank god I‘m done with all HG Wells‘s books on the list of #1001books to read before you die. I loathed them all, definitely not for me. Of the five books I read by him, this was probably the most annoying.
You were right to bail, @Megabooks 😉

This ended up being really neat. And now I can tell my other half that I've read it! This is one of the few books he had read that I had not 😂😂
🎧 this is such an old radio play with a cast of characters from Star Trek! It was nice to hear Leonard Nimoy‘s voice. I enjoyed it & could pick out 4 actor‘s voices. There‘s an interview with Dr Crusher (Gates McFadden) at the end. Fun listen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️2/3
Visited Magic City Books in Tulsa and loved it! Such an excellent selection. (My three-year-old took this pic!)
