Kind Worth Killing
Kind Worth Killing | Peter Swanson
A devious tale of psychological suspense so irresistible that it prompts Entertainment Weekly to ask, -Is The Kind Worth Killing the next Gone Girl?- From one of the hottest new thriller writers, Peter Swanson, a name you may not know yet (but soon will), this is his breakout novel in the bestselling tradition of Paula Hawkins' The Girl on the Train--and is soon to be a major movie directed by Agnieszka Holland. In a tantalizing set-up reminiscent of Patricia Highsmith's classic Strangers on a Train... On a night flight from London to Boston, Ted Severson meets the stunning and mysterious Lily Kintner. Sharing one too many martinis, the strangers begin to play a game of truth, revealing very intimate details about themselves. Ted talks about his marriage that's going stale and his wife Miranda, who he's sure is cheating on him. Ted and his wife were a mismatch from the start--he the rich businessman, she the artistic free spirit--a contrast that once inflamed their passion, but has now become a cliche. But their game turns a little darker when Ted jokes that he could kill Miranda for what she's done. Lily, without missing a beat, says calmly, -I'd like to help.- After all, some people are the kind worth killing, like a lying, stinking, cheating spouse. . . .Back in Boston, Ted and Lily's twisted bond grows stronger as they begin to plot Miranda's demise. But there are a few things about Lily's past that she hasn't shared with Ted, namely her experience in the art and craft of murder, a journey that began in her very precocious youth.Suddenly these co-conspirators are embroiled in a chilling game of cat-and-mouse, one they both cannot survive . . . with a shrewd and very determined detective on their tail.

Not realizing this was a series, I read the third one recently and liked it enough to go back and read this one to start at the beginning. But it‘s just a lot of shallow, icky characters. Getting in the mind of a murderer kind of thing. And so I didn‘t feel very invested and I don‘t think I want to read any more of these.

Holy cow! I know I shouldn‘t adore the serial killer(?), but how can you not? This is such a morally ambiguous, twisty little tale and the ending made me groan out loud, “oh no.” I already have the next book on deck and I will probably start it immediately. Lily Kintner is one of the most interesting characters I‘ve encountered. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ted and Lily meet at an airport and end up plotting to kill Ted's wife Miranda, who is having an affair with the building contractor (Brad). Many twists later Detective Kimball is brought in to investigate a murder. Ending has me picking up the next book in the series ASAP!
Overall, an excellent read.

This is my August #BookSpinBingo reading plan. Meetings this week, classes begin next week (I teach) so that will limit my time to read - along with my need to sleep and my need to spend time with my family and friends 😂 6-7 books a month seems to be my usual range, so I think this is doable - I love when a plan comes together (A-Team) 😉

A little late to the party on this one! A sophisticated thriller with many twists and turns, at first I thought maybe one too many , but probably not. One of the few times where the last line was an obvious invitation for a sequel, also made me LOL! A testimonial to the fact I‘m a mood reader, passed through the living room, saw it , grabbed it! Reading season in central Arizona, 109 is the temperature at 2:46 PM🥵😡

Suet624 And I just remembered we‘re getting a heat wave in the 90‘s for three days this week. I think it‘s fair,y recent that people started buying ac units around here. I still don‘t have any. Just a fan. So I‘ll take a few showers and maybe find a lake to soak in. 😊 5mo

Leftcoastzen @Suet624 the key is stay hydrated and don‘t do those physical things on those hot days, or see if the library or accessible place has air conditioning. A friend of mine a bit older decided after a couple summers with a few 100 degree days in Seattle, to put in air conditioning. He really had to decide if he did intend to age in place or downsize, cuz he was going to do whole house. 5mo
Leftcoastzen @Suet624 I was raised here , but went to my grandparents in Midwest summers when I was a kid. My preferred climate is San Francisco‘s so I‘m pretty much annoyed with Az all the time 😁 5mo
Suet624 I lived in Arizona very briefly in 1972. Way too hot in February and March for me even then. I can‘t imagine how you ever get to enjoy nature when it‘s so hot. I‘d be annoyed too if I were you. San Francisco weather is 💕. 5mo

Thrillers are my go to genre when I am in need of a palet cleanser of just in the mood for something quick and engaging. They are hardly ever satisfying however. This one got me hooked from the start. So many twists that I didn't expect. I probably wont' remember much in a week time but for now it did the job.

A gripping, dark psychological thriller with morally ambiguous characters. Swanson's writing is propulsive & easily readable. The plot has just enough twists & surprise reveals without feeling over-the-top. I didn't realize until after that it‘s part of a series (noted as book # 1). I was satisfied with the ending and not sure how to feel about it being part of a broader story arc. Regardless, the book works well on its own. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 ❤️📚

This was a pretty good book. A little slow in the beginning but it got better as it went along. It‘s a bit like Patricia Highsmith‘s Strangers on a Train, but this is strangers on a plane, with a bit of a twist. You will find that Lily‘s moral compass is a bit skewed. #SeriesLove2023 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView

This psychological thriller follows the story of Ted Severson, who meets a mysterious woman named Lily at an airport bar. They strike up a conversation, and Ted confides in her that he wants to kill his unfaithful wife. To his surprise, Lily offers to help him. As the two delve deeper into their twisted plan, the story becomes a complex web of lies, deceit, and betrayal.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really liked this when I read it a few years ago, so a refresh before the sequel seemed like a good call. Not nearly as good as I remembered; cardboard characters, marginal plot. Obviously some of that opinion is due to remembering, however vaguely, the twist. Rereading thriller types is sketchy business and I don‘t usually do it. I still preordered The Kind Worth Saving. Idk why. When curiosity gets me, I‘m usually disappointed.

Leftcoastzen Wow it‘s on my TBR , maybe not , especially because of your review of the sequel!😄Also , school shootings in fiction can be so manipulative & “just no “anymore! (edited) 2y

I feel like this is the Swanson book everyone recommends, and I finally got around to reading it. While not as frenetic as some of his other stories, the pacing was still excellent and kept me turning the pages. My only real eye-roll with Swanson's writing in general is that literally every character he writes is somewhat obsessed with/primarily motivated by sex, which gets old to me. Still, a great thriller with some fun twists.

This is a smart book with a well thought out plot -- except for the ending. The twists and turns kept taking me by surprise, and it was a very enjoyable read, even though the character voices were rather similar (3rd person limited might have worked better than 1st person POV for each character). ⬇️

This was my #bookspin for April, and finally I'm caught up with my bookspins for the year! @TheAromaofBooks

eeclayton The ending was a bit of a letdown for me, it felt out of character that Lily should make such a stupid mistake. However, I liked the father's letter on the last page with the ominous PS section. 2y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! This one is on reserve for me at the library. I have such mixed feelings about Swanson's books! I literally can't put them down when I'm reading them, but then I get done and think about all the things that were 100% based on coincidences and other randomness 😂 2y

I‘m officially a Peter Swanson fan. This book never let up from the first sentence till the fantastic last one! I‘m calling it “Double Indemnity/ Body Heat 2.0”
Told in the POV of wealthy Ted and mysterious Lily, we as the readers only know what they know. All along I knew there had to be multiple other sides to the sordid story. The lesson here to men is to never trust a woman who wants to always please you sexually.
