“I learned (what I suppose I really knew already) that one can never go back, that one should not ever try to go back—that the essence of life is going forward. Life is really a One Way Street, isn‘t it?”

Number ten in my Year of Marple. Not my favorite as far as the mystery is concerned, but I loved the setting (cozy, old-fashioned Bertram‘s Hotel, London) and all of Miss Marple‘s reminiscing as well as her reflections on time and change.

I‘ve settled into a routine of 2 or 3 at a time, in different formats.

I loved The Violin Conspiracy.

It‘s probably sacrilegious to bail on Agatha Christie, but I did bail on the tagged book. There was too much side story and not enough Miss Marple. This was for book club, and I wasn‘t the only one who bailed. We also had the option to watch the video of the series episode, which was enjoyable.

Another excellent mystery featuring Miss Marple! I especially love the audiobooks narrated by Stephanie Cole. I find her voice very soothing when discussing murder. 🙃

I can tell why this is slated as one of AC‘s lower ranked stories. First I noticed was that Mis Marple -her detective- is barely mentioned besides being an old lady basically snooping. I could not get a handle on the plot at all, and not in the way that AC usually write to make you question. But that nothing made sense, even with the quick close up. Which didn‘t help understand what was going on. couldn‘t get in it. Not good first Marple #whodunit

Here is my second librarian recommended AC novel. I‘m a little worried of the poor book condition with the back pages ready to fall out
This also appears to become my introduction to AC‘s female detective: Jane Marple. Excited yet a little apprehensive from recently hearing this is one of her lower ranked mysteries. It seems that, on vacation, Marple finds herself solving a mystery. Sounds like Scooby-Doo there. #whodunit

I tend to assume I've read like every AC before but I don't think I ever read this one. It was quite enjoyable aside from such crime-centred novels not being her best IMO. ⭐⭐⭐

I read this June 9-13 and rated it 3.5 ⭐️. I liked this Miss Marple story, but found some elements of the plot a little too over the top. It wasn‘t bad but it felt a little too busy.

#ReadingMM moving on to the next title 😉
At Bertram's Hotel was not as impressive, despite a plot unusual from her other settings. And Miss Marple was back in the sidelines, unlike the last few mysteries, when she was the main star just as I like it.

Listening to the dramatised #audio made up for the lacklustre plot. Dramatisation had a slightly extended ending and the adaptation was a thrill to listen to.

TheAromaofBooks I really love Miss Marple a lot, and get sad when she is in books but not in the middle of them. Also remember reading this and really wishing that Bertram's Hotel was a real place I could stay! 5y
BookishMe @TheAromaofBooks yup, the immaculate comfort and pampering. Nemesis started with Miss Marple, and hopefully she remains in the spotlight 5y
BookishMe @TheAromaofBooks I remembered the character from the Carribean Mystery!! ;D 5y

TheAromaofBooks Yes!! I was pretty sure those connected somehow, but it's been a long time since I've read them. 5y
BookishMe @TheAromaofBooks and this book was actually included the list for March Bookspin and now replaced! 😄😄 The dramatised audio really made a difference! ;p 5y
TheAromaofBooks I've heard really good things about the dramatized Christie books. I don't listen to audiobooks very much, but I may have to try a couple of these. 5y
BookishMe @TheAromaofBooks I have intermittent success with audiobooks and have yet to complete an entire audiobook. A mix of print (or ebook) and audio works for me so far. I remain envious of those who can breeze through audiobooks 5y

Miss Marple comes up from the country and stays in Bertram‘s Hotel in London - a majestic grandeur of a hotel with traditional decor, impeccable service - just what she needs to treat herself on a holiday. Yet Miss Marple does not foresee the dangers and violence that are about to happen.
An enjoyable read.

I enjoyed this overall, but it didn‘t measure up to my favorite Miss Marples. I feel like she was relegated to a bit of a witness/bystander role in this one. Added to that, I put too many of the pieces together before the reveal, so the ending felt anticlimactic. Ah, well. A middling Agatha Christie is still lots of fun. 😊

There are only about 5-10 Agatha Christie novels that I haven't read yet, and I try to savor them, but I just flew through this one in a day! It was a Miss Marple one with good secondary characters, a setting of a stately old London hotel, and several layers of mystery. The cats and I snuggled under a matching blanket to finish it!

This was the kind of lobby I envisioned for Bertram's Hotel. Luxurious. Deep, thick carpets your feet sink into. Warm and inviting. But is it really?

I enjoy Miss Marple stories, but tend to feel she's under-utilised.

This was the perfect palate cleanser after my last bail. Agatha, you came through for me once again.

(Photo from Google.)

Bambolina_81 @Libby1 I agree! I read my first Miss Marple earlier this year (Murder at the Vicarag) and was really surprised with how small a role Marple played. 8y

Libby1 @Bambolina_81 - I've read more Poirot so far and it's so different how she uses Marple. I suppose it makes sense because as an elderly lady no one expects her to notice anything. Actually, no one notices her at all! What a perfect foil. 8y

"...Always been her own worst enemy..."

"A really nice conventional remark..."

Is this something that people say about ambitious or daring women?

It kind of minimises their achievements or concerns.

Has this been said of you? Is this something people only say about girls or women, or am I wrong about that?

I AM happy to be corrected. After all, according to some, I AM my own worst enemy!

?

Read some heavy stuff and followed that up with an episode of Fortitude Season 2, for reasons no one can understand. So now that I'm depressed *and* freaked out, it's time to unwind before bed with some cosy, comforting Christie on this rainy night. I've watched the adaptations of this but I think it's the first time I'm reading the book! How soothing to think that there might be a book or two by Christie that I still haven't read.

Another Dame Agatha that I've either never read or don't remember reading before. I vaguely remember seeing the tv episode based on this book, but there was a lot of "artistic" changes made to the plot. I hate it when they do that, her plots are perfectly fine as they are. Loved this Miss Marple book, nicely twisty story, though the end seemed a bit meh. #christiescrimeclub
