The first time I read this book, I had nightmares for a few weeks, but I HAD to know what was going to happen next, so I kept reading. This time, I didn‘t have nightmares, but it still creeped me out enough that I slept with the light on for a few nights. I love everything about this series: the characters, the supernatural elements, the bits of actual history sprinkled in, but especially the dialogue.
4.5βοΈ OK, this book is a pretty high score for me because the majority of it was amazing. It had me hooked from the beginning and had me on the edge of my seat waiting for what was happening next. However, the ending was just so bad for me. It felt so disconnected from the rest of the story and is making me question if I even want to continue the series. Which sucks because again, the majority of the book was so amazing.
Scariest book I‘ve read in ages. The narration is fabulous and I reckon she probably captures the language of that time period better than if I were reading it on the page. But at more than one point I cranked the speed up to 2.5 just to get through the terror. Very well done βοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈ
Evie O'Neill has a gift, but it's in her best interest to hide it. It's 1926, during Prohibition, and after getting a bit drunk at a party she lets loose a secret that a wealthy young son holds, using her gift. She's shipped off to New York City to live with her uncle where a series of grisly murders occurs. Can she use her gift to help solve the mystery or will she become a victim? ββββ
This was a little slow to start, lots of world and character building rather than plot, but once the plot started it really went fast.
Reading this for my book club and enjoying it so far. I love the world building, it feels like being in the 1920s
One of my all time favourite series. Yet to read it but the audiobook was absolutely amazing and the narrator/s did such an amazing job. Definitely a must read and I highly recommend the audio. Anyone else lucky enough to have the finance to buy this @fairyloot edition?
I am ecstatic. I've been looking to buy a used copy of The Diviners for forever and I found this one at my local library's store in almost perfect condition. I can't wait to buy the other books in the series! #thediviners #halloweenreads #bookhaul

It bothers me that so many people hate Evie as a character. Growing up with ADHD as a girl I've felt all of these things so strongly. You try your hardest to be good or polite or "normal;" in the end you lose track of time or you're too enthusiastic about that one subject or you miss a social cue or you say that impulsive thing. Your brain cracks under pressure and the harder you try the more you fail. The world isn't kind to the neurodivergent.
I originally gave up finding a book in my physical collection for the #CuriousCovers car prompt (most of my books are fantasy) and picked a comic with a motorcycle on the cover. I noticed that the book I found in a little library two days ago has a car on it, though!
Found a copy of a favorite book in a little library in a town I'm visiting for the weekend! #LittleLibrary #LFL
I really hated the first 2/3 of this book. I felt it was way longer than it needed to be. I was not connecting with the main character because she was so annoying. And most of the problems were just because they lacked communication and I hate that in books. Like JUST TALK! But towards the end I really did start to like it and I started liking the characters more. This books was 3 stars, but I will continue (:
I was actually surprised that I liked this book. It had a great pace and a get build up to the story. I was fully submerged in the old supernatural world. Definite worth the hours it took to get through it! Can‘t wait to continue with the series.
I have officially read 66 books this year, go me! π₯Here‘s to a new year of reading! and Happy New Year to all! π₯πΎ
What a book π³ A WILD ride once I properly got into it, I DEFINITELY recommend the audiobook, its pos-i-tutely fabulous!, so tempted to get the next one from my library but considering it took me over 2 months to read this one π€ Maybe not yet.. 3.5/5
First of all, I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! Second of all the characters and their backstories were exciting and I wanted to know more about them. Even the side characters who appeared for just a few pages had depth to them. Every character felt real, a person with fears, dreams and hopes. Third of all, the story itself was thrilling and I couldn't put the book down. I can't wait to see what happens next!
Demonic ghosts, flappers, diverse characters, biblical allusion, show girls, s serial killers, religious zealots, a mystery to be solved... what more could you want? I LOVED this one! Listening to the #audiobook only made it better.
Day 16
I‘ve been trying to get through this book for years. Multi-perspective horror with supernatural elements in 1920‘s Manhattan- my kind of book. I think by trying to keep up with new releases/ARCs has had me stray away.
My 2021 TBR will be devoted to 400+ p books I haven‘t had a chance to read.

"There is nothing more terrifying than the absoluteness of one who believes he's right. People will believe anything if it means they can go on with their lives and not have to think too hard about it."
I've been listening to this on audio audiobook forever, but it is SO good!
I really enjoyed this one! I read it for an online YA book club that I am part of. This book also completed my Goodreads Challenge of reading 55 books in 2020!
Yes. Yes, it is.

This book was exactly the escapist ride I need right now! Wonderfully detailed story set in 1920s New York, with just the right amount of creepiness. Listened to this on audiobook and I was completely blown away. January LaVoy absolutely nails it and makes every character come alive. I‘m very excited to continue the series!
My next book for #LMPBC has arrived!! Can‘t wait to jump in. I finished this month‘s in record time and I will mail it out at the end of the week. Enjoying my group‘s picks so far!
Such an improvement! Loved the #audiobook version of this and will give the rest of the series a go in this format. Still a touch long even in this version, but still also got chills listening to certain passages. Bray paints such a vivid and beautiful portrait with her words; I‘m shocked I haven‘t seen this as a tv series or movie. Checked my first book off for this month‘s #bookspinbingo and this was my #bookspin! Woo hoo, two for one!!!
Already enjoying this in the audio format. My biggest issue with it was my dislike for Evie, but I find her much less annoying being read by someone else. So maybe just the way I read it π€·πΌββοΈ #bookspin is opening a new way for me to enjoy/getting addicted to books , haha
Happy #bookspinbingo! I‘m super excited for this month! My #bookspin is the tagged book; I‘ve read it but I‘ve heard wonderful things about the audio version so I figured I‘d give that a try. My #doublespin is The Rise of Magicks which will conclude a trilogy. I‘m already starting 21 - The Downstairs Girl for #sundaybuddyread, so after the spins I‘m gonna try for that bottom row....ambitious for me, but fun! Happy Reading!
I am reading this one, and it's really interesting.... But I find myself easily distracted from reading it. There's a lot of Bray's Witt, charm and sarcasm. She is definitely great at making good, well developed characters, and the plot is interesting. It's just... Meh. I'm only halfway through the first book, though. Has anyone read it? What are your thoughts?
#70 of my year
#weeklyforecast Almost halfway through tagged book and really enjoying this occult mystery set in NYC in the roaring 20‘s! Have to start and finish Warcross for #doublespin.

This was as deliciously creepy & satisfying as I remember it! Evie is the pinnacle of a witty, charming 1920s flapper β & a refreshing break from the βI‘m not like other girlsβ heroine. The serial-killer plot is gruesome β read with the lights on! β but intriguing. The best part, though, is how completely immersive the setting is. Every page is teeming with wonderful details about life in 1920s New York β & not just for the glamorous set. β β β β β.

#currentlyrereading | wrenching myself away at last from L. M. Montgomery‘s beloved P. E. I. circa WWI to Manhattan, 1926. Traipsing along history via book, apparently!
I love the 1920‘s setting and the elements of horror. The jazz-baby slang can be overdone at times, but the atmosphere is great! The protagonist starts off as a spoiled, selfish flapper who treats her best friend with careless disregard, but she shows growth by the end. Recommended!
Finished this shawl that I wanted to take to the #ReadingRetreat at #GladstonesLibrary. Guess I'll have to make another one to finish at the retreat in November. π
