Not That I Could Tell
Not That I Could Tell | Jessica Strawser
When a group of neighborhood women gathers, wine in hand, around a fire pit where their backyards meet one Saturday night, most of them are just ecstatic to have discovered that their baby monitors reach that far. Its a rare kid-free night, and theyre giddy with it. They drink too much, and the conversation turns personal. By Monday morning, one of them is gone. Everyone knows something about everyone else in the quirky small Ohio town of Yellow Springs, but no one can make sense of the disappearance. Kristin was a sociable twin mom, college administrator, and doctors wife who didnt seem all that bothered by her impending divorceand the investigation turns up more questions than answers, with her husband, Paul, at the center. For her closest neighbor, Clara, the incident triggers memories she thought shed put behind herand when shes unable to extract herself from the widening circle of scrutiny, her own suspicions quickly grow. But the neighborhoods newest addition, Izzy, is determined not to jump to any conclusionsespecially since shes dealing with a crisis of her own. As the police investigation goes from a media circus to a cold case, the neighbors are forced to reexamine whats going on behind their own closed doorsand to ask how well anyone really knows anyone else.

These are four books with #Purple that I have read. My favorite was A Time to Dance which tells the story of Veda, a dance prodigy, who becomes an amputee after an accident. Her dreams are shattered but her spirit is not…

If you like Elin Hilderbrand- neighbors as friends, acquaintances, knowing too much, not knowing enough, having secrets of their own, and resolving in the end - this book is for you. As an audio experience and I had to research the narrator‘s works. Yep, she narrates EH! No wonder I thought Elin must have moved from Nantucket to Yellow River Ohio 🤣. Now I‘m curious if I‘d have had EH swimming in my head had I read this in print.

When one of the neighbors of a bucolic neighborhood in Yellow Springs and her two children go missing after a night of fun, the other neighbors are left with more questions than answers. Rather than a fast paced thriller, this is more of a slow suspenseful burn. Even if the reader can see it coming, you still have to keep reading to find out what happens. Female friendships, marriage and family are at the center of this story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 /5

I wouldn't exactly call this a thriller. I guess I'd say it's dark women's fiction, tho I'm not usually thrilled w/ catagorizing books as for women. But in this case it rings true. This book is about women. Their friendships & vulnerabilities, their fears, insecurities, & strengths. I liked all these women even those we don't get to know as well. Izzy was my fave & I feared for her for a while. I admired Clara from first to last. Solid story. ⬇️

bookandbedandtea I listened to this one and thought the narration was great. 4y

It started off well but soon became a run-of-the-mill domestic drama. The bad guy was obvious, & Izzy was unbelievably naive. 3⭐️

I guess my brief flirtation with going back to reading thriller/suspense novels is over! It‘s just not my genre. I said if I could put this down for 24 hours, I‘d bail. Now, I‘m involved in three other books I‘m enjoying more. 🤷🏻‍♀️ This #botmbacklog is headed to the library sale!

IamIamIam I love thrillers but sometimes the market gets swamped with mediocre books because a genre is popular. Sorry this didn't work out for you!! 5y
Reviewsbylola I have read one of her books and wasn‘t impressed, which was a bummer because I met her at Ohioana and she‘s so sweet! 5y
Reviewsbylola Actually, this is the one I read! 5y
Megabooks @IamIamIam I will be the first to admit I‘m picky about thrillers. It‘s a genre I read rarely. I much prefer ones that veer more on the mystery side, but I think I had read too many in a row. 5y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola I noticed it was set in south central Ohio, and I always appreciate a book set in the flyover! So cool that you met her!! This just wasn‘t doing it for me, but it could‘ve been like bingeing on candy after Halloween. This was the one snickers too many! 😂 5y

I wouldn‘t go out of my way to rec this one. The story was predictable and it seems to be attempting what I call “Gone Girl Lite.” It has all the twisty elements of Gone Girl (missing wife, slimey husband) that make you stay up reading, but without the unreliable narrators, psychopathic behavior, or any semblance of a real mystery.

Just finished book #3 of my #botmbacklog. This fell between a 3-4 for me. I hate when books are compared to books that I love, because they just never quite live up to the hype, and this was definitely not Big Little Lies. It was entertaining, if a bit predictable. Overall, I enjoyed it.

I think I would have liked this better if I hadn't expected it to be a mystery. There is a mystery at its heart -- what happened to Kristen and what did the neighbors know -- but it's more about the neighborhood dynamics. Good enough for a summer read. I didn't completely buy the resolution but I also didn't care enough to look back to see. I also just read The Perfect Mother, which has similar themes and was more suspenseful.

This was a good story involving the relationships between a group of neighbors and the ramifications when one of them goes missing. This book was marketed as a mystery but should fall under general fiction. There is no great mystery. It was obvious to me exactly what happened. There is a small ‘surprise‘ at the end of the novel but it was more sweet than shocking. It was a solid story with s good message.
