Rogue Protocol | Martha Wells
198 posts | 240 read | 35 to read
SciFis favorite crabby A.I. is again on a mission. The case against the too-big-to-fail GrayCris Corporation is floundering, and more importantly, authorities are beginning to ask more questions about where Dr. Mensah's SecUnit is. And Murderbot would rather those questions went away. For good. ___ Martha Wells' Rogue Protocol is the third in the Murderbot Diaries series, starring a human-like android who keeps getting sucked back into adventure after adventure, though it just wants to be left alone, away from humanity and small talk. Read Rogue Protocol and find out why Hugo Award winner Ann Leckie wrote, "I love Murderbot!" At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 (another) October #TBRTarot “Choose a Book… that is less than 200 pages.” I‘m really enjoying this series. And I can sooo identify with Murderbot. He wants to have as little to do with humans as possible and all he wants to do is watch his soap operas. I just want to hang out with my kitties and listen to audiobooks. Recommended.

This is the 3rd book in the Murderbot Diaries series. While they are short books, there is a lot packed into them, both in action and lessons. I really enjoyed the character of Miki and how 'she' affected Murderbot, given the differences in personalities, roles and how they were treated by humans. While the first one in the series is still my favorite, I will continue reading them as I am enjoying Murderbot's adventures and growth. 4/5 stars

Trucking right along with this series. It feels like bingeing a TV series and also like it should be one big book instead of a bunch of short ones. I love the commentary Wells is making about what makes someone "human" (despite the misuse of "laid" as the past tense of "lie" (i.e., without a direct object) twice in this book...one of my pet peeves).

julesG I love the Murderbot stories. I'm always happy when I come across a review here on Litsy. As for the grammar, sure it wasn't "laid" as past tense of "lay"? 3mo
ImperfectCJ @julesG Yep, I'm sure. Both times it was in the context of, "I laid down in my bunk," which in the present tense should be, "I lie down..." 3mo
ImperfectCJ @julesG A copy editor at Tor just needs to review the forms of lie/lay :-) 3mo

I was pretty sure this reread in particular couldn't hit the same as it did the first time for two reasons that would be major spoilers to include here. I was right.
The burgeoning emotional journey Murderbot is on continues at a believable pace for a being coming to grips with a pretty fraught existence: 1/3

Robotswithpersonality 2/3 used to mistreatment from humans, and reluctantly yet still automatically protecting its latest helpless human ducklings, it has a lot of unwanted feelings at witnessing a bot valued and cared for by humans. The plot furtherance spanning the series is evident in the idea that even if Murderbot isn't as clear on its purpose now that it's not a - basically enslaved - SecUnit, it does want to help friends it's met in previous adventures. 6mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 That goal is directing its actions, its choices at the beginning and the end of this book; the connections are a lot clearer now that I'm tracking the happenings in each book (and reading them closer together).
And of course, sassy inner monologue and kickass action scenes.
On to the next!

This continues to have a very interesting plot but still lacks any distinguishable human characters. I am very aware this is deliberately done but it's hard to be interested in the characters when they are cardboard cutouts compared to Murderbot.

At least the author stopped beating us over the head with “Murderbot just wants to watch their soaps and has social anxiety“

The 3rd installment wasn‘t my favorite to date, but it was definitely a lot of fun! And I found myself marveling that Wells was able to once again draw me in and get me immediately invested in a new cast of characters while still advancing Murderbot‘s main storyline all in the span of a short novella.

Dinner was at my favorite place, having some super yummy chicken hibachi! 😋💕

I just finished this Murderbot book today, and I'm jumping into the next one tonight! I can't believe how much I'm enjoying this series so far! 🤖

julesG Don't forget, after book 4, read book 6 (Fugitive Telemetry) and then book 5 (Network Effect). 😁 10mo
Branwen @julesG Oooh, that's good to know! So I have to read book 6 before book 5? Thank you so much for letting me know! 10mo
julesG In Murderbot's timeline Fugitive Telemetry happens before Network Effect. And the events in Network Effect nearly seamlessly lead to book 7, System Collapse. I read the books in publishing order the first time round, because I was lucky to get the ARCs. My son read Network Effect (in German)and said it read like some part of the story was missing. We checked online and indeed, book 6 before book 5. 10mo
julesG My son then read the first four books in English, read book 6 (which wasn't published in German yet), then Network Effect and then he re-read the series about twenty times until the next book was published. And he has read a lot of other books in English, too. So, he basically did the same thing I did at his age, switch to English books because the translation wasn't available yet. 10mo

Flew through this one, even though it‘s an audiobook and I usually only listen to them while driving. It was a reread and it didn‘t take long to remember why I had like this particular instalment, despite the series overall blending together in my memory. If you like snarky, ungendered, cyborg, reluctant killing machines, this is a series for you.

The Murderbot series continues to delight me with this entry following our protagonist through a nearly-abandoned station seeking answers about the past.

Amid the ensuing mayhem, some questions are answered while more are raised, and Murderbot's interactions with humans continue to challenge their worldview.

Looking forward to getting my hands on the next volume, as always!

Third in the series, this one finds Murderbot crossing paths with Miki, an innocent, trusting human-like robot, while he continues investigating GrayCris. Miki and her human companion are this volume's contribution to the wonderful array of characters Wells is creating for us in this series. This was another good adventure.

Oh, Miki. 😭 Aside from what ended up being higher stakes in the end, this retained the feel of the series of Murderbot Diaries as a whole that I've come to love: snarky, inadvertently protective of all squishy humans, still trying to do right, solve mysteries, while figuring out what they want to do with their life beyond the next crisis, providing the reader insight into what it means to show compassion, even if you're not classified as human.

#2022Book98
I didn‘t like this one as much as the first two. The best character from the second book wasn‘t in this one, so the banter between him and the main character left a pretty big hole in the dialogue. And the plot in this one didn‘t feel as original as the first two books.

More of the murderbot series! I‘m loving these short pieces- if they were all chapters in a book I‘d go thru them in a minute. I‘m kinda enjoying how I‘m being forced to pace myself tho, and also how the books are basically independent. This universe is so great, and all the characters are so genuine, I can‘t get enough of it.

Once again, Murderbot‘s efforts to uncover the secret, sordid history of the company that owned them are interrupted by having to rescue some humans in over their heads. What‘s a Murderbot to do?

Murderbot is so freaking relatable, & I love it. Their desire to escape into their media, their aversion to interacting with people. We get some more world building, more reasons to dislike The Company, character growth, & a tease of an ending!🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Martha Wells delivered another winner with Rogue Protocol. It could be read as a stand-alone and still enjoyed but I certainly recommend reading as a series. This one continues Murderbot on her quest for justice and evidence. In the process, she meets new “clients” and befriends a robot. Of course, the standout here is her insane sarcasm. Gotta love a non-human that can joke.

Our favorite SecUnit belongs to the group of most endearing non-human characters one can get attached to, and I have Data and The Doctor (why hello Enterprise and Voyager) in that list too. 50 more pages to go and hoping I‘ll finish the book before I turn in for the night.
