The Chrysalids
The Chrysalids | John Wyndham
The terrifying story of a world paralyzed by genetic mutation. In a community where deviations are rooted out as abominations, David's ability to communicate by "thought shapes" is a dangerous secret. When his ability is discovered, the results are horrific.

Started the tagged book while getting my tattoo today. It‘s not finished yet but it‘s well on it‘s way to being wonderful.

wanderinglynn Awesome tattoo! Does it say something? Or is that just part of the design? 3mo

It was only after I read the first chapter that I noticed anything odd about this cover! Clearly not very observant.

BooksAtNight But those books all sound so good, how could you pass them up? Sorry, not helping I know. Maybe you should have someone reset your Book Outlet password? My best friend changed mine so I have to type “doireallyneedthis” every time and it‘s kinda working? 12mo

This book as eh. I ha e read so many sci-fi stories like this that I stopped caring halfway through. There is a kid who has powers that make him different. He finds a group of kids and as they grow up they face hardships. They get found out and have to run. I won‘t ruin the ending. I realize this was written in 1955 so it was new and interesting then, but now it is one of millions. It‘s a quick read so if you want to try it‘s not a slog.

rather_be_reading cool cover! 14mo

I'm very excited for both of these. I have seen so much Litsy love for Heart's Invisible Furies. Has anyone read The Chrysalids? #bookhaul

Billypar I always recognize The Chrysalids as a very early addition to my TBR when my Goodreads account was still new. One of these days I will finally get to it.. 2y
readordierachel @LeeRHarry That's good news! Hopefully I will be too after I read it :) 2y
batsy That's good to know @LeeRHarry ! I too have The Chrysalids and a couple other Wyndham books that I've yet to read 😊 2y
readordierachel @Billypar It's a bit of a time capsule, looking back to those early Goodreads TBR adds. So many unread books. So many. 2y
vivastory I read The Chrysalids last year. It is really dated in parts, but I enjoyed it. 2y

🕸️🕸️🕸️ So I decided to try out Audible again and this was the book I listened to. It was ok. The narrator annoyed me when he tried to do little girl's voices but other than that it was a solid story.

nickimags Such a shame when you don't enjoy the narrator 😯 2y
Foxyfictionista @nickimags Yeah, wasn't my favourite, but it was ok. 2y

First published in 1955, this #postapocalyptic novel about conforming to the societal standards of religious fundamentalists in a post-nuclear holocaust world is well written & a quick read. David & his friends look non-deviant but share a dangerous secret: they can communicate mind-to-mind. Published today, this books would likely now be classified as #YA due to the ages of the protagonists. I recommend for fans of #dystopian lit.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

#kitap #book

#funfridayphoto Fave book you were assigned in school reading.

I've been meaning to revisit this for a number of years now but am worried it won't be as good as I remember!

#FunFridayPhoto. Read this book in English class and fell in love with science fiction and dystopian novels. I went on a Wyndham binge and read Chocky, The Midwich Cuckoos ( Day of the Triffids and The Kraken were too scary )

A chilling post-apocalyptic tale anticipating the devastations that could be wrought by a nuclear catastrophe set amidst a backdrop of religious intolerance and strict dogmatism that is unwilling or unable to tolerate anything out of the ordinary. The story may sometimes be bogged down by grandstanding speeches from either side, but if you could overlook it, this makes for a compelling read.

Love finding great retro cover art on #usedbooks like this one. The Chrysalids is about genetic mutation in a post-nuclear future, but hey "it's sci-fi, let's slap a flying saucer on the cover" ??? #augustofpages #augustphotochallenge

MrBook Oh, wow. This is really cool 😊👍🏻. 3y
LittleBowBook I read this in high school and still think back to it! I think it was what opened me to dystopian fiction. Then I got hooked! 3y
dystopianaut it also gives away the ending! 3y
Marchpane @dystopianaut it's been years since I read it, but I remember the craft being more like helicopters? And they were in a forest? At least that's how I imagined it, I'll have to dig the book out to check 😂 3y

So this is required reading for my fourteen year old girl's Secondary Literature class. Naturally, I would have to read it myself. Anyone who has read this yet? How'd you find it?

shawnmooney I studied it in high school too--a hundred years ago. I remember little about it now, but am actually going to re-read it soon as my 'dystopia' pick for the Book Riot Reading Harder challenge. 4y

What an amazing book! I love sci fi that incorporates social issues. This was horrifying but also so well done. I can't recommend it enough!
