Red Sparrow (Media Tie-In)
Red Sparrow (Media Tie-In) | Jason Matthews
Soon to be a major motion picture starring Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton! From veteran CIA officer Jason Matthews, the electrifying, New York Times bestselling modern spy thriller, Red Sparrow. In contemporary Russia, state intelligence officer Dominika Egorova has been drafted to become a "Sparrow"--a spy trained in the art of seduction to siphon out information from their marks. She's been assigned to Nathaniel Nash, a CIA officer who handles the organization's most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. The two young intelligence officers, trained in their respective spy schools, collide in a charged atmosphere of tradecraft, deception, and inevitably, a forbidden spiral of carnal attraction that threatens their careers and the security of America's valuable mole in Moscow. For fans of John le Carre and Ian Fleming and featuring "high-level espionage, pulse-ponding danger, sex, double agents, and double crosses" (Nelson DeMille), Red Sparrow is a timely and electrifying thriller that is impossible to put down.

Movie: True Lies

Ran across this book in search for a book with some similar qualities as the movie True Lies. Has anyone read this? Thoughts?

Stacked and added to my GoodReads wish list shelf.

Finished this past week for my virtual foodie book club, this was between a pick & so-so for me but rounded up as spy books aren‘t really my thing but this one kept me reading. Also the recipes at the end of each chapter, plus all the food descriptions made it unique. Not sure I‘ll read the next one but maybe.Pictured with (Station Chief) Forsyth‘s Soubise (caramelized onion & rice casserole) from the book. Yum!😋Link to recipe/review blog post⬇️

LeahBergen A spy novel with recipes? That‘s certainly different! 3y
mabell I thought the same @LeahBergen ! I did a double take to see if I missed it, and it was actually a cozy 😂 Is this the movie with Jennifer Lawrence? 3y
DebinHawaii @LeahBergen @mabell They are brief recipes at the end of each chapter, some for for Russian dishes but also other cuisines, based on a dish either a character ate or sometimes cooked. It‘s why one of my cohosts picked it for foodie book club. And yes, it was made into a movie with Jennifer Lawrence. I haven‘t seen the movie yet. 3y

Not an Irish breakfast or an Irish book, but definitely some heavy St.Patrick‘s Day (with a touch of Easter) decorating was happening at the diner where I got my fried rice with an over-easy egg cup. Also featured, a SBUX Caramel Macchiato & a poi donut.🤷🏻‍♀️I got about 1/2 a chapter read of this book for my virtual foodie book club this morning before work got crazy & I never got a chance to post it. Happy St. Paddy‘s Day everyone! ☘️💚🌈🍀

LeahBergen That‘s some awesome decorating! 😆 👏👏 3y

This is how you write a spy novel! I was sooo disappointed with John le Carré earlier this year. It felt like they were only swapping documents in parks in the middle of the night without any logic to the story. Red sparrow had a really good characters and such a good plot! If you've never tried a spy novel before this is where you start! Also first "international novel" that I've read that had big part of the events happening in Finland. ??

I‘m usually a big fan of spy thrillers, espionage etc in a novel but this was just too slow and painful for me. I just couldn‘t stomach more than the first half, so I bailed. Maybe I‘ll watch the film, if I‘ve got a couple of hours on a rainy afternoon ☔️

This book was between a pick and a so-so for me. There were certain points where I couldn‘t put it down and others when I would space off in the middle of a page or chapter. Also, since many characters go by multiple names I sometimes had trouble keeping track of who was who. I‘m looking forward to watching the movie and will likely read the rest of the trilogy, though.

I don‘t read many spy/espionage thrillers. After reading this book, I‘m not sure why! Slow to start as the stage is set, but then the action and intrigue take off. The pace doesn‘t slow down until the last page, which sets the stage for the next book in the trilogy. FYI, contains graphic violence & sex. Bonus: one recipe at the end of each chapter for the foods consumed in the novel (although they‘re vague w/ no measurements). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This is what my day off has looked like: my book, my dog, my couch, with cough drops and tissues nearby. A day of rest while I try to kick this cold. I even shirked my mom duties today and had hubby bring dinner home for the kids. I can‘t remember the last time I truly took a sick day. 🤧😷 Thank goodness it‘s Friday!

I am about halfway through this book and think I‘ve figured out who the mole is. Now, to race to the finish to see if I‘m right!

My 13 year old daughter gave me the second book in this series for Christmas. She got it from the local “Five Below” (like a dollar store but everything is $5 or below) and did not know it was the second in a trilogy, and I love her for it. ❤️🥰 So, I borrowed the first book from the local library via Overdrive and I am starting it today, so I can read the book she gave me next.

It took me forever to finish this! It was interesting but it wasn‘t one of those stories I couldn‘t put down. I listened to a good part in audio which helped with all the Russian pronunciations. Since it took so long for me to finish this one I wasn‘t going to bother with the next one but Red Sparrow kind of ended on a cliffhanger so now I need to know what happens next! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I really liked this book in the beginning. It was moving quickly and really got me interested in the characters and the story. But then, it just kept getting more complicated and there were infinitely more characters to keep up with. By the end, I felt myself getting confused and I had a hard time staying interested. I liked this, but I don‘t feel like it needed to be as long as it was.

ReadZenRites I admit that I paused 1/4 way through, thinking I‘d go back, but nothing in the plot is enough of a “must know” to draw my attention back. 😟 6y
Victoriahoperose @ReadZenRites I don‘t think I‘m going to read the rest of the series. It just didn‘t wow me by the end. 6y
ReadZenRites I wonder if it would have been a better story if the author put it all in one book instead of trying to stretch it out into a trilogy. 6y
Victoriahoperose @ReadZenRites I agree with that. My biggest complaint was that after a certain point, it felt like it just went on forever. And then the end was almost anticlimactic. Maybe if it was altogether, it would have been more entertaining? 6y

#AudioPuzzling along tonight(or early morning)with Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews, the series that the movie is based on. Obviously, considering the title page is the movie poster. Really enjoying it so far, if this is at all accurate, I‘m terrified of the future which will include a worse Cold War than the last one. Some seriously scary stuff.☢️

Maewyn I need to do some audio crocheting before the busy season at work starts. What are you doing the puzzle on? 6y
Lizpixie @Maewyn my iPad. It‘s an app called Magic Puzzles & it‘s brilliant. You have options of either small free packs or the free monthly packs of mystery puzzles(you don‘t know what the picture is), you can buy packs of between 25-50 puzzles based on a theme or you can pay a large fee to unlock every puzzle. Plus you can use your own photos to make puzzles. And you earn coins for finishing one, the smaller the pieces you opt for, the more you earn. 6y

Getting started on my next read. Prime recently alerted me that the movie was available to rent, so I had to get the book started ASAP. I know it's the movie tie-in cover- please forgive me, but it's Jennifer Lawrence, enough said. Quite a deviation from the YA phase I've been in, but so far so good as long as I can keep all the Russian names straight. I remember a similar predicament with Crime and Punishment. 🤔

This is a great yarn about the CIA and its Russian counterpart waging a secret war. At the center is Dominica, a Russian agent, who has fallen in love with Nate from the CIA. There are myriad subplots and Matthews is a master at creating memorable supporting characters. There‘s plenty of action and intrigue as the agencies move their human pawns around a global chessboard. There are two more books in the trilogy and the second is just as good!

Right book, wrong time. I like my spy novels to be a bit faster-paced. Fans of Le Carre and Martin Cruz Smith will enjoy this one. Good writing, but I just couldn‘t get into it lately. I‘ll try again another time as I‘m sure it picks up as it goes along, but there was way too much initial set-up for me. I definitely wanna see the movie though!

I am going to rate this well because I found so much to digest. Pun intended. Too much to break down here in 451. I read the other 2 in the series as well but it went down hill fast. I have to wonder if these were rushed because of a/the movie deal? It FEELS like everything that could have been - just was not. By book 3 I wanted to give Jason Matthews a hug & help him look for his soul. Or maybe he is laughing to the bank. Could go both ways.
