Set in picturesque Paris, this tale of a brave little girl's trip to the hospital is as appealing today as it was in 1940. The combination of spirited heroine, timelessly appealing art, cheerful humor, and rhythmic text makes Madeline a perennial favorite with children of all ages. A Caldecott Honor Book. Full-color illustrations.

Madeline is a cute book where when a little girl, Madeline, has to go to the hospital her friends show their support. They want to be just like Madeline. This story is an older story that is still read by many today because of its light hearted message.

This is a great book for all ages. It also shows a lot of representation for abstract families. Madeline doesn't have parents or a brother or sister. She lives with 12 other girls and one house mother. It also gives a positive connotation for scars. Sometimes people cant control the scars they have and at the end of the book all of the girls wanted to be just like Madeline.

Madeline was written in 1939 written and illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans won a Caldecott award in 1940. It is about 12 girls who are always perfectly in line in everything they do and live in an old house in Paris. The smallest of them was Madeline. She was brave, fearless, and daring. One night she woke up in extreme pain and had to get her appendix taken out. Her friends from the house visited and she showed them her scar. They wanted one too.

RíEllie discovered her mom‘s old Madeline doll has a scar on her tummy. She (and her twin brother) are very very concerned so I pulled out the book to assure them Madeline was just fine. Now RiEllie is in a corner reminding Madeline how she displayed that scar like a badge of honor to her friends. I wish I could post her voice in this telling!

One of my favorite Poetry Fiction book series growing up (made into a show on NickJr.)Madeline is a rhyming story of a Parisian little girl living in a Catholic orphanage with 12 other girls. Great for RA‘s and SA‘s. and can be used for UDL guideline optimization of relevance, value, and authenticity(7.2) For ESOL students I can share the video story read alouds and episodes. #ucflae3414sp20

DrSpalding What kind of fiction? Think of the time frame and reply with the correct genre. These books are excellent books to incorporate into the primary classroom as some students will have prior knowledge. They also expose students to another culture and location in Europe. 5y

This Caldecott award winning RF book is perfect for young readers! The theme of this book is about a little girl, Madeline, who lived with a bunch of girls in Paris. One day, she falls ill and needed her appendix out. All of the other girls miss her so much, that they visit little Madeline, who fearlessly shows them her scar. This book would be great for IR, and students could read more books in the series after reading this one for IR!

MaddyJ https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/madeline - a great site for a lot of different material and ideas for the classroom specific to the book! The UDL principle 7.1 to optimize individual choice and autonomy and ESOL 21 to record your lectures, presentations, or stories on audiotape, especially for new students who have very limited exposure to English could definitely be accomplished using this book! #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y

This classic, Caldecott awarded, RF book follows Madeline, the smallest girl at her school and her adventures. For great resources for this book, visit This book would be great for an AS on Ludwig Bemelmans and the other iconic books in the Madeline series. UDL 8.3 about fostering collaboration and community works great because this is a book where the students can be involved in the reading.

hadassajl EL #5 which is about teaching technical vocabulary supporting key concepts also works because some words would need to be defined such as appendix or solemn. #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y

Bemelmans was awarded the Caldecott Medal for his classic story of Madeline. This poetry (P) book talks about Madeline the smallest yet bravest girl of them all. Madeline is rushed to the hospital and the other 11 girls parade her with gifts so she can recover. This book is great for a RA and to have students share a time when they were brave!
#UCFLAE3414SP20

UDL: 2.2 ‘clarify syntax and structure‘ students pay attention to the rhyming words

LeahH EL: 13 ‘use preview and review activities‘ teachers need to show EL students rhyming words and do some activities so they understand when reading. 5y
LeahH http://www.readwritethink.org/parent-afterschool-resources/activities-projects/r... “construct-a-word” is the technique teachers can use to help children get familiar with rhyming words 5y

fabozzia I would pair this book with UDL strategy 2.1 because there is a lot of great vocabulary for students to clarify, which aligns with EL strategy 5, to teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts. I believe this story would be one of the simpler books, in some ways, to incorporate these lessons and strategies. 5y

This Caldecott award winning HF picture book by Ludwig Bemelmans is about the smallest but bravest girl Madeline and the other little girls she lives with. In the middle of the night, mother finds that something is not right and it‘s off to the hospital with Madeline. https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/madeline This book would best be taught in an RA. #ucflae3414f19

CPettersen UDL 3.2 should be used to highlight the patterns in Madeline‘s life and how she is distinct from the other children. Madeline by Ludwig Bemelma, a RF book, is about a girl who lives in Paris in an old house. In this version, Madeline gets sick and has her appendix removed the other girls are at first worried , but after visiting her they want to be just like her and have their appendix removed as well. https://www.brighthubeducation.com/lesson-plans-grades-1-2/98771-second-grade-ma... this website has a great activity that goes with this book.

Alexush This book is a Caldecott Honor Book. For this book I would use UDL 3.1. The ESOL strategy I choose is 4 “Link lesson topic to students prior knowledge.” For this book I would RA. #ucflae3414f19 (edited) 5y
