Ghosts | Raina Telgemeier
Catrina and her family are moving to the coast of Northern California because her little sister, Maya, is sick. Cat isn't happy about leaving her friends for Bahia de la Luna, but Maya has cystic fibrosis and will benefit from the cool, salty air that blows in from the sea. As the girls explore their new home, a neighbor lets them in on a secret: There are ghosts in Bahia de la Luna. Maya is determined to meet one, but Cat wants nothing to do with them. As the time of year when ghosts reunite with their loved ones approaches, Cat must figure out how to put aside her fears for her sister's sake -- and her own. Raina Telgemeier has masterfully created a moving and insightful story about the power of family and friendship, and how it gives us the courage to do what we never thought possible."

I was transported away with this little middle grade graphic novel. I read it in just a little over an hour. It touches on a lot of great topics but centers around family and honoring the dead through Dia de Los Muertos. I cried.
I love the fictional town it takes place in. The author said it‘s based on Half Moon Bay in Northern California @Leftcoastzen 💙

Fun yet serious. Wraps up the fears & the hopes that some might have revolving this subject.

Liked how this began in August. Not sure if the author did this intentionally? It seemed to give a silent nod to the more ancient celebrations that honored our dead (July to Aug. OR mid Aug. through early Sept. Celebration For Our Dead. I believe it was celebrated and called?? I'm still researching on these histories).

The art was whimsical & beautiful.

I‘m trying to finish up the #BBRC prompts I‘d rather avoid, so here‘s #FakeDiversityForUnder16s for #yeahbaby! I think I would have read this differently had I not been aware of the concerns about the book‘s depiction of Dia de los Muertas and the happy Spanish-speaking ghosts of the mission. https://bit.ly/3uZV5CL

The question I came away with, though, was how a young person with cystic fibrosis would find this

rockpools book. Maya, the MC‘s younger sister with CF, is portrayed as funny, always positive, sensible and coming to terms with her own mortality. The story is much more about how her older sister Cat copes with Maya‘s condition than about Maya herself. I don‘t have the answer to my question- I‘ve found both very positive reviews and a LONG (very) academic essay by an affected disability scholar that looked at 3y
rockpools my concerns in much more detail: https://bit.ly/3rooZhX

I really dislike the phrase ‘fake diversity‘ - if someone has gone in with all good intentions to write characters beyond their experience, part of me still thinks that should be applauded or encouraged. But no, I wasn‘t massively comfortable with this one. I have now a little more knowledge about CF and its (lack of) representation in literature! @LibrarianRyan @Sarahreadstoomuch
(edited) 3y
Megabooks I think these are great points about this book. I definitely think it has ableist leanings. Just because there are “diverse characters” doesn‘t mean they are authentically written. 3y
See All 7 Comments
rockpools @Megabooks Thank Meg. I think that‘s maybe what I was trying to get at! 3y
LibrarianRyan @rockpools I agree with you that good research would mean something. When I wrote the challenge it was something that was really be argued by libraries and school boards. Same way people argued fake news. This wasn‘t my favorite by her either but I did like that it was something... I had a staff member with CF and my brothers girlfriends son has CF and they both act/respond to their condition in completely different ways. It changes perspective 3y
rockpools @LibrarianRyan Oh interesting- thank you! I don‘t think I‘d even heard the term before the challenge (except maybe re American Dirt). And that‘s understandable- very different perspectives and responses. It does make me want to find an ‘own voices‘ read or two alongside. 3y
LibrarianRyan @rockpools there was a big debate in libraries around picture books. You were getting more and more picture books with POC characters or LGBTQ characters written by popular cis white authors. So the debate became how Representative are these books if they are not written by own voices. 3y

Cat and her family move to a new town, and the town turns out to be haunted by spirits. The story explores some heavy subjects- genetic disease, anxiety, fear, and death. A moving story with a touch of magical realism about family, the importance of connection with them in life and in death.

A touching story by one of my favorite middle grade graphic novel authors. Cat‘s family moves to a new town in Northern California because the climate is better for her sister, Maya, who has cystic fibrosis.

Raina is not Mexican, so I don‘t know if her representation of Día de los Muertos is a respectful portrayal. I hope so; I loved this book.

I enjoyed the themes of anxiety in this book, & related to Cat as she worried about her sister's health. It's difficult for kids to handle that kind of stress & fear (not to mention the occasional guilt), even for adults. Telgameier does a great job of conveying all this in a super kid-friendly way, while also telling a fantastical story about moving to a new place, making new friends, & refamiliarizing yourself w/your family's culture.

Probably not as light of a read as I was going for, but still a good one that kept me reading.

For those of you who are late to the party, like me, it‘s about two sisters. The youngest of the two has cystic fibrosis, which comes with its challenges for her and the rest of the family. This touching graphic novel depicts the girls‘ relationship, hardships, growth, and acceptance of death while they learn a bit about their culture. 💕 #middlegrade

I rarely read a #graphicnovel. This middle grade one was enjoyable on many levels. The “ghost” part describes the Mexican celebration of the festival of the dead. That part of the storyline reminded me of the movie “Coco”, which I loved. I found the inclusion of the young sister who has cystic fibrosis the most interesting part. The reader learns of the illness and the treatments in a gentle way. #booked2019
