The Supernatural Enhancements
The Supernatural Enhancements | Edgar Cantero
A mesmerizing novel...what begins as a gothic ghost story soon evolves into a wickedly twisted treasure hunt in The Supernatural Enhancements, Edgar Cantero's wholly original, modern-day adventure. When twentysomething A., the European relative of the Wells family, inherits a beautiful, yet eerie, estate set deep in the woods of Point Bless, Virginia, it comes as a surprise to everyoneincluding A. himself. After all, he never knew he had a "second cousin, twice removed" in America, much less that his eccentric relative had recently committed suicide by jumping out of the third floor bedroom windowat the same age and in the same way as his father had before him . . . Together with A.s companion, Niamh, a mute teenage punk girl from Ireland, they arrive in Virginia and quickly come to feel as if they have inherited much more than just a rambling home and an opulent lifestyle. Axton House is haunted... they know it...but the presence of a ghost is just the first of a series of disturbing secrets they slowly uncover. What led to the suicides? What became of the Axton House butler who fled shortly after his master died? What lurks in the garden maze and what does the basement vault keep? Even more troubling, what of the rumors in town about a mysterious yearly gathering at Axton House on the night of the winter solstice? Told vividly through a series of journal entries, cryptic ciphers, recovered security footage, and letters to a distant Aunt Liza, Edgar Cantero has written an absorbing, kinetic and highly original supernatural adventure with classic horror elements that introduces readers to a deviously sly and powerful new voice. From the Hardcover edition.

I bought this book years ago to read at the airport. Sadly, I lost the copy, and the hope is ever find such a unique book ever again. Yet, with luck, I got to reread it! Cantero is a genius. Characters encounter the traditional haunted house inherited. Including visions and those who locate the original instances. Codexes and Help (a good doggo). An epistolary novel to reread for details. Unfolds like the secrets of what is beyond.

06/150 I did like this more than Meddling Kids, but it still a low pick. There's a lot going on in this story, including a haunted house and a secret society playing a mysterious game. The supernatural elements of the story were pretty minimal for most of the story, even the ending leaves it pretty ambiguous as to what was real and was was just the MC's imagination. 3 ⭐⭐⭐💫

Last epistolary from #lmpbc round 8 group E. Not my genre, didn‘t think I‘d like it, but a surprisingly enjoyable read. I‘ve never read anything like this - but so glad it was picked for my group.

1. Ugh yes. This tagged book was fantastic until it absolutely sucked.

2. Yes, The Silent Patient made me so mad that I threw that mf.

@TheSpineView #two4tuesday

TheSpineView I hate it when a book starts out with such potential and just fizzles. At least if it fizzles from the beginning, I can call it a DNF early on and not waste good reading time. Thanks for playing! 5y

Reading my #lmpbc book. I have no idea what I'm doing with this mark-up thing. 😆 (Yes, that's a phone bill and those markups are part of the book; it's for group (E)pistolary!)

Jerdencon I just underline anything that seems interesting or make a comment here and there - there is no right or wrong way! 5y
Sward7 Same - I make comments in the margin when I have a reaction or question. My favorite is also when I make a connection - when the character or scene reminds me of another book, movie, character, or event. 5y

The Supernatural Enhancements is a gothic book part of the found footage genre, like the #blairwitch. It tells the story of A and Niamh who inherit a creepy home from an unknown relation who died mysteriously and start trying to unravel the mystery. It's told through a series of journal entries, scrawled notes, recovered security footage, letters to Aunt Liza, audio recordings, complicated ciphers, and even advertisements. #witchyreads

This book was perfect for ushering in fall and I enjoyed it throughly! I‘ve had in on my shelves for a while but picked it up after reading (and loving his other book- Meddling Kids). It has a slow start but the twist makes it worth it! It‘s a crazy, quirky book full of twists and turns with a little of everything: horror, humor, Secret societies, ciphers, ghosts— Perfect Halloween/fall vibes.

I really loved this one. I tried to read Meddling Kids but couldn‘t quite get into it so I wasn‘t sure about supernatural enhancements, but Cantero vaulted me into this crazy, labyrinthian plot set in a crazy, labyrinthian house and I couldn‘t put it down. It‘s not perfect by any stretch, but it doesn‘t need to be - it‘s purely, gleefully, unapologetically itself, and I loved that about it.

#TBRtemptation post 2! Another Gothic horror tale for your consideration. Some of the elements include: an eccentric Virginia gentleman who wills his rambling house to a distant relative; a young pair, one of whom is mute; coincidental suicides out a certain third-floor window; a twisted treasure hunt; a garden maze; a haunted house; a basement vault; rumors of strange solstice gatherings; ciphers; and more. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

DarcysMom I requested it on #Netgalley - keeping my fingers crossed that In am approved. 😄 7y

This was lots of fun! Life got in the way and I had to read it slowly, which means I got confused sometimes about who some of the characters were - there's a lot going on in this book. Despite that, this was a fun and silly read, full of ghosts, secret societies, funky dreams, and fun characters. It turns all the haunted house tropes upside down.

Smangela Welcome to Litsy! The book sounds good. But I‘m also a scaredy cat!🙀 7y
morgan_lionheart Smangela - don't worry, it's not all that scary. I don't like scary books either. There are some disturbing recurring dreams, but that's the worst part. 7y

For #Recommendsday I was just going to go with The Supernatural Enhancements, as one more book to sneak into #scaretober. But then I remembered I read all 3 of these pretty close together last year, & that was great! Though not at all related, I'll bet that if you like one, you'll like the other two. All haunted houses, all reality-bending stories, all edge-of-your-seat thrillers... Treat yourself to all three as soon as you can📚📚📚

This one was odd. The format was a mix of diary entries, video surveillance and notes between the main character and his mute counterpart. I don't think the book would have been as good in a traditional format but at times it was a little all over the place. It was a quick interesting read but I finished it not really knowing if I fully understood what happened. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

An odd but very compelling story. Part mystery, part thriller, part fantasy, part memoir, and a little bit of...something else. Supernatural Enhancements tells the story of A. and Niamh, two very interesting characters who move into a haunted mansion in Virginia. I confess to having some trouble getting through this. A disjointed narrative didn't resonate with me, but I am glad I stayed with it, because the end made the whole trip worthwhile.
