Finally picked this very short book up after reading speak years ago, speak touched me in soo many ways. This one was as powerful as her last one. I have a hold for speak now as well because I need to read it again. 4/5
A beautiful tribute to the survivors of sexual assault. Halse writes with such love for the survivors who inspired the book. A short, five star read that will be near and dear to the hearts of women everywhere.
This is heartbreaking, powerful and raw. Very emotional and beautiful but also horrifying.
I highly recommend this book, for everyone. A must read.
Audio... grinding? This is the least glamorous part of my job. All of the cut edges need the soot sanded off, which is dusty, messy, and makes me smell like burning leather. 😅
"When he was eighteen years old, my father
saw his buddy's head sliced into two pieces,
sawn just above the eyebrows by an exploding
brake drum, when he was in the middle
of telling a joke."

It feels bad to give a low rating to this book given how personal the subject matter is to the author. I think my biggest issue here is that Laurie Halse Anderson is an incredible storyteller…in PROSE. These poems didn‘t feel poemlike at all, just like she split all her sentences in half and called it a day.

Some carried over from April and some new ones from my shelves.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Damn, Laurie Halse Anderson is a force! This stunning free-verse memoir addresses her debut novel Speak in terms of her own childhood assault. In a series of stories, she expresses vulnerability, bravery, anger, clarity, and frustration. She‘s outraged - as she should be - by how little has changed in the 20+ years since Speak. We have to do better, teach better, and for god‘s sake, LISTEN.
Hitting all my fitness and reading goals so far this week. 🎧👟 Today, I walked 5 miles and started the tagging audiobook. It‘s a little breezy, but a beautiful January day in the Volunteer State.

This is the story of Laurie Halse Anderson‘s life written in verse. Her story of family, hardships, struggles, abuse, rape, substance abuse, survival, living again, finding her voice, speaking up, and becoming an advocate. There‘s so much in this book, I listened to the audiobook which Anderson narrated herself. Definitely a must read for all.

And Barbie? I‘ve got nothing
to say to that bitch.
Not till she learns to walk
flat-footed,
like a real woman.
1. Both Shout (tagged) and The Starless Sea have been my favorites this year.
2. The Ten Thousand Doors of January

This book is so honest, raw, real and important. So many people have similar experiences of sexual abuse or rape and for them to read another person's story could be an important part of one's healing journey.
I love Laurie Halse Anderson as an author and as a person and was happy to listen to her memoir. I know she has helped victims of sexual abuse for years and continues to speak her truth to help others. If you have never read one of her books, I highly suggest it.
I broke my bookshelf challenge because I had to step out and buy a book, I could not stay home any longer so with all of the PPE ready to go, I went to Half Price and here was this book ready for me to read. I love this author, this book comes with a trigger warning for rape but it is wonderful book for those who have read her other books and have met her to say #metoo.
Readers will dive into the world of Laurie Halse Anderson and how her experiences formed the foundation of the novel Speak. She does not hold back as she explains the rape she endured in high school and the cascade of events her life turned into as a result of it. She also calls out society and how it continues to fail victims of rape.

This #audiobook is amazing. Here's why:
1. Read by the author. ❤
2. It's autobiographical. And she has an amazing story.
3. It's poetry.
4. Not very long.
5. She does voices. And talks in Danish. As needed.
6. She's from Upstate NY. ❤❤ (That last thing may only appeal to me. But it made it extra special from my POV.)
#40Miles20Hours update Day 6. 2.28 miles and 60 minutes. Grand total tally is 8.83 miles and 3.63 hours.

Also received this fun owl face mask in the mail from my mum. She's the penmanship queen.
This is a 2 in 1 today.
@Eggs thanks for tagging me. I finally found some nice things on my walk today.

#audiobook still amazing!
So today is day 3. And it's freezing cold here in Boston. But there's snow at my aunt's house in Northern NY. So I'll take it. Today I did 0.92 miles and 26 minutes. Grand totals are 2.53 miles and 62 minutes. Only about a bazillion of each left to go!
I am about half way through this #audiobook. And it's still amazing.

I got off to a slow start today, but the important thing is to start, right? 1.61 miles and 36 minutes today.
This #audiobook is awesome btw. Poetry read by the author.

This was a lovely memoir in verse, although of course it was very upsetting at times. Halsey Anderson tells her story of being a rape survivor who became an advocate for other survivors.
Finally watching Booksmart on Hulu, having coffee and ice cream.
I‘m trying to recover from a bought of the stomach flu.
This was a moving memoir that‘s also a rousing battlecry to believe, defend, empower and shout for those that can‘t. Even better listening to the author read this.

First audiobook down for #jumpstart2020! I was kinda disappointed by this one though. I think my expectations were too high because of Speak. Some of the poems were good, but others were ehh. @Clwojick @Lizpixie
Listening to this as an audiobook for #ReadHarder, the audiobook poetry challenge. Recommend!
I expected this short book to be a lot better. It‘s a compilation of short vignettes about Anderson‘s life and a lot of other stuff. Problem I had with this one is that the vignettes didn‘t link well together. After a while it felt like reading ranting. Very disappointed in this one as my second read of 2020. I wouldn‘t recommend it.
Verse about writing her other book and publishing it and talking about sexual assault. Moving.
This book is so powerful and should be required reading for all. So many of the poems perfectly express gender inequality, as well as the importance of speaking up. Each poem is clear yet has beautiful and witty imagery.
I had so much fun volunteering at the Goddard Riverside Book Fair yesterday as you essentially get to recommend books to shoppers all day long! I was recruited for the YA room, but I was able to zip around the last ten minutes and get this lovely book haul! I already read Opposite of Innocent and just started Shout this morning. Plus some holiday cards for #LitsyLove!
Have you read any of these?
@Cinfhen and @Jee_HookedOnBookz !
This memoir told through poems had some quotes that really resonated with me. Overall, the book made me feel so uncomfortable, which considering the subject matter, it should, that it ultimately brought down my rating. Ireserve 5 stars for books I want to reread, and I never want to touch this book again. I'm glad that Anderson continues to share her voice, and I recommend this to fans of The Poet X.

Congrats on the #sixdigitsamurai milestone, Scott! I‘ve enjoyed our reads together! Litsy is so important to me! It is my favorite social media because it is about friendship and shared love of books and our reading lives. I cherish my Litsy friends so much. 💕 Tagging new friend @HoneyBeeLee !
These twelve are my top picks from August. I know the covers are kind of blurry. I will use the comments to list them; that will also make it easier for me to figure out which ones I haven‘t yet reviewed. Let me know which of these you‘ve also enjoyed. 😊
