Spin the Dawn
Spin the Dawn | Elizabeth Lim
Project Runway meets Mulan in this sweeping YA fantasy about a young girl who poses as a boy to compete for the role of imperial tailor and unexpectedly falls for the court magician in the process. When Maia Tamarin is presented with an opportunity to change her fortune, she doesn't think twice about dressing as a boy and traveling to the Summer Palace. She knows she could lose her life if she is discovered, but the risk is worth it to save her family from ruin and achieve her own dream of becoming tailor to the emperor. There's just one catch: Maia is one of twelve tailors vying for the job. Backstabbing and lies run rampant as the tailors compete in a series of challenges to prove their artistry and skill. Maia's task is further complicated when she draws the attention of the court magician, Edan, whose piercing eyes seem to see straight through her disguise. But nothing could prepare her for the final challenge: Maia must sew three magic gowns for the emperor's reluctant bride-to-be, from the laughter of the sun, the tears of the moon, and the blood of stars. With this impossible task before her, she embarks on a journey to the far reaches of the kingdom, seeking the sun, the moon, and the stars, and finding more than she ever could have imagined. . . . Steeped in Chinese culture, sizzling with forbidden romance, and shimmering with magic, this young adult fantasy is pitch-perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas or Rene Ahdieh. "Spin the Dawn is pure magic. Romance, artistry, and deep enchantment." --Gregory Maguire, bestselling author of Wicked "What an amazing creation! Every time I thought I knew where it was going, I was wrong. This is a white-knuckle read." --Tamora Pierce, #1 New York Times Bestselling author of Tempests and Slaughter "Part epic adventure, part fairy tale, and part Project Runway, Spin the Dawn is a thrilling tale as rich as velvet and as exquisite as fine embroidery." --Heidi Heilig, author of The Girl from Everywhere

Mulan meets one of those fashion design reality shows, plus lovely writing and immersive world building. With her brothers fighting in the war and her father ill, Maia‘s family receives a summons for her father, a tailor, to appear at the emperor‘s court. Maia dresses as a boy and goes to the court in her father‘s place. The competition to become the emperor‘s tailor is fierce, but dangerous magic could destroy Maia forever.

This was a refreshing and enchanting read. I absolutely loved this story. It is a mix of Mulan and Aladdin with a bit of a twist. Although I have done this before and was really looking for a different read in fantasy and knew ahead of time ... this is the beginning of a series and ends on a cliff hanger... the next book is not due out until July 2020. I have pre ordered it though.

#7days7covers #covercrush day five. I love the melding of fighting and sewing on the cover. I love the easy way she holds the scissors and the way the thread is wrapped around them. Also, the cadmium yellow endsheets make for a beautiful contrast. Not gonna lie, picked this book up because of its cover.

Apparently our heroine was a 13-month-old prodigy with the manual dexterity, visual acuity, and hand-eye coordination to thread needles 🤔
Maybe she's magically gifted--this is fantasy--but if not, this is just lazy hyperbole.

So this is marketed as Project Runway meets Mulan. While it definitely does have those influences, they're basically done 1/3 of the way in. I don't think the plot was necessarily unique but--and I cannot believe I am saying this--...I liked the romance. A lot. But now I am wondering where the YA community sits on a 17ish year oldish having a boyfriend who is 500ish and a bird...🤔🤔🤔

I liked this though and absolutely going to read the sequel.

Oldschool_millenial Haven't had my ear to the ground on that, but I feel like concern over that kind of age difference in fiction (semi/immortal and mortal couplings)went out the window (at least for a time) especially after Twilight 🙄 for better or for worse. 3mo

In the infamous words of Mindy Kahling - Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?

I had several people ask, “How‘s the book?” Normally, this would lead to a 30 minute conversation complete with hand puppets and maps. But I just kept it to a minimal shoulder shruggy, it‘s good. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

MellieAntoinette Cause I was kind of bored by this one. Good writing, good bones, loved Eden but overall, I never found that invested moment where I was on the edge of my seat waiting to discover more. Will I read book 2? Yes. Will I buy book 2?? I just don‘t know, man! I‘m eeking it into a pick on Eden alone. 4mo

This book is too much hyped ⭐⭐⭐I can only give 3 star review . I enjoyed it but only the relationship part the quest part is somewhat boring .

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘m always a bit worried about hyped books not living up to my expectations 4mo
anjedah @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I can imagine that now , a bit devasted after finished reading that but it's okay 💗 4mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @anjedah, I usually steer clear or buy it and put it on my bookshelf and circle back round in a couple of years 😂 4mo

Finished this yesterday. It was so good. Filled with a few unexpected twists. Only downside is we have to wait til next summer to find out what happens next! A fun, adventurous YA with some Chinese folklore woven throughout. I really liked Maia and Eden. Looking forward to seeing what adventures await them next.

This isn‘t a horrible book, although it is very YA. But, as someone who knows nothing about making clothes, I would have liked a graphic novel or some format that let us see some of the tailors creations.

Thank you Owlcrate for including this imaginative story in your July box. I don‘t know if I would have read it so quickly otherwise. The world building is exceptional making it easy to imagine each scene. Maia is a strong and interesting character and Edan and new character to love. The folklore is seamlessly woven into the story giving it even further depth. I anxiously await book two.

#81 of my year and I want to hurry up and read this because I really really want to start Soul of Stars because I loved the first one, Heart of Iron. I‘m so excited for it also this year so many great books have yet to come out and that means I‘ll definitely pass my goodreads reading goal this year eeek!

Caffeinated_Reader Oh this book was so magical. I absolutely loved it. I loved the main character Maia so much. She was so brave and selfless. She made the most difficult decisions in the end but I look forward to seeing what will become of her. Also of what Edan will do once he finds out everything oh he‘s gonna be pissed lol 4mo

Seize the wind,” I whispered. “Don‘t become the kite that never flies.”
🌿
This is a whimsical story with beautiful and diverse folklore at the centre of the book. Spin The Dawn has me enchanted from the very first chapter, from that moment I knew I wouldn‘t want to put this book down and I wasn‘t wrong. I‘m desperate to read the sequel and Edan is my new fictional boyfriend 🌞✨🌕

LibrarianRyan Either yesterday or the day before some twitter complaints started to trend that this book was “abelist“ and I believe a few said racist as well (but please don't quote me on that one). What are your thoughts.

I havent read it yet because my copy is coming in my owlcrate.
5mo
kierathedreamer @LibrarianRyan Hi there! After doing some searching on Twitter I can see where people are coming from, I don‘t think the intent of the author was malicious at all though - I definitely don‘t think there was anything racist in the book at all but I can understand why the main character disgusing as brother could be seen as ableist. At the end of the day if a certain community it upset that‘s completely valid - I‘ll just have to do more research 😊 (edited) 5mo
LibrarianRyan @kierathedreamer Interesting. Lately these things have been coming out before the book is published so I was interested that it made it through publication. But I find there is always something to complain about in every book. 5mo

This definitely has Mulan vibes, but it only lasts for about a quarter to half of the book. I loved the magic in the book and the different empires/cultures. I do feel like the MC became a bit juvenile over the romance, but overall it is a good book and something I definitely recommend.
