I enjoyed this book very much. But lately I‘ve been listening to a number of books in which the protagonist feels like something they‘ve done has caused catastrophic events. “It‘s all because of me.” In Binti‘s case her family and friends believe so too. Binti is brave, proud, and ambitious. The ambition is what makes her family so angry and resentful. They call her selfish. It‘s the distant future, and her people still believe (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 a woman‘s highest duty is to get married and have babies. I realize that science fiction is a way of viewing the present through a different lens. But it pisses me off that it‘s the way it is NOW. And it terrifies me that it might continue to be this way. This was one of the books I selected for the September #AuthorAMonth but I‘m only now getting to it. (edited) 12mo

For me this suffered from middle book in the trilogy syndrome. It wasn‘t helped by the fact I started it on audio and had to switch to print when I realized I was losing focus. I loved Binti returning home after all of these experiences that have changed her so much. I wanted more of her with her family. However there is no way, after an ending like that on, that I could possibly pass on the next book.Light pick #authoramonth

This is the second book in the series and it takes place a year after the first book. Binti wants to go home but is faced with finding out who she and her family really are while facing difficulties of prejudices and gender roles. This was a good book but there were parts that I found myself zoning out. However, I do want to read the 3rd book. 3.5 ⭐️

I‘ve bailed on the last 3 books I‘ve picked up (it‘s not you books, it‘s me) so I jumped to the second book in the Binti series knowing it would be short, engaging and thoughtful. It was! The Binti series is amazing for imagining a future universe with space travel and alien interaction but also probing the mystery/foreigness that other cultures on earth remain to each other.⬇️

Centique The first book was more of a thriller, this one has more to do with Binti‘s family and her character development. 2y
Centique Background photo - out on a friends boat on Friday. Got a bit stuck when the winch electronics malfunctioned. Luckily we had some strong people on board who managed to haul the anchor up by hand (all chain and in 50 feet of water 😬) 2y

Centique @Reggie yes I have it ordered from the library. Such a good series! How are you doing my friend? 2y
Reggie I made a longer joke about how I‘m glad ya‘ll didnt get heat stroke and none of you know how to swim and that nobody was on the water to rescue you so that eventually ya‘ll had to eat each other, but that‘s how my horror mins works. Lol, good how bout you? I had an interview with a company a couple of weeks ago to work somewhere better so cross your fingers for me. 2y
Reggie Mind not mins 2y
Centique @Reggie that‘s so exciting! I will cross all my fingers! Yeah I had a few moments worrying about being stuck out there - but we weren‘t that far out and Coastguard would have come rescued us. Still glad we didn‘t have to eat anyone 😂😂😂 2y
Centique @Reggie we‘re all good. It‘s been a long winter with everyone getting COVID and flu cos our borders are back open (thank god) So finally everyone is well again and seeing a bit of sun and hopefully the mood will lift 😊 2y
Reggie @Centique there are some people at my work on their 3rd round of Covid. It gets crazy there. We‘ve had it in waves. I‘m glad ya‘ll are ok. 2y
TrishB I had exactly the same thoughts as @Reggie 😁 2y
Centique @Reggie yeah we‘re going to get waves of it too I‘m sure. Just got to do the best we can - best wishes to you to keep your head above it 💕 2y

Reading the second story ‘Home‘ was my #bookspin pick for January. That story felt more like set up for the final story (which I‘m in the middle of right now).

I immensely enjoyed the first story. It‘s sci-if, but deals with so many other issues than just murderous aliens. Extremely creative and well crafted! I look forward to finishing the trilogy!

I‘m a bigger fan of the Akata Witch series, probably because I prefer fantasy over science fiction. However, I do love the characters and world building in this series, and the storyline definitely took a turn I was not expecting.

Poor Binti - Born to be a peacemaker (Harmonizer) she wants to please her family, yet she can't control the events that happen around her. It all seems out of her control while she is learning about her ancestors and the power that was bequeathed to her. A fascinating world building by Okorafor with hints of her Nigerian heritage. Can't wait to read book 3.

I spent the first half of the book feeling meh, SFF really isn‘t my ‘thing‘ and loving Binti must have been a blip. Then the second half was not long enough (I know!) - I wanted to spend much more time in the desert, and may have to get book 3 sooner rather than later.

So hmm. I guess I‘m more interested in Binti working out who she‘s becoming and the world‘s she‘s connected to than the conflicty bits.

Also, this definitely isn‘t a standalone.

Having spent a year at Oomza Uni, Binti is feeling more out of sorts than ever, she asks for leave for herself and Okwu, her Meduse friend as an ambassador for their people to earth and her home.
Another excellent instalment in the Binti Trilogy that truly wowed me.
Full of far distant sci fi elements and the same prejudices we are dealing with today.

After finishing the first book in the series I was looking forward to this second one and it didn't disappoint, in fact I liked it more than the first one. This time the story happens on Earth not in space like the first book but this made it even better for me, the mystery and revelations being more enjoyable for me. Definitely a pick, I will start the third book soon.

claudiuo @TheAromaOfBooks Another book from my #bookspinbonanza that I've read out of order (it is number 5 in my list, still haven't read the first 4 but it was due back to the library tomorrow so I had to get to it). This is the 2nd installment in the Binti trilogy. I loved the first one-just gobbled it right up. I had a little trouble with this one though. I think my issue is that I did this on audiobook. I struggled with Akata Witch too on audio. I think some authors/books are harder for me to consume through my ears vs my eyes. Not sure if that makes any sense but I‘m sticking with it. Still overall a pick.

TerriGreen I completely agree with audio vs physical. Anything with a large cast of characters I do better reading in physical form as I often flip back for reference. This often goes for fantasy or mystery too. 4y

This was a powerful read, Binti is an interesting character and her problems feel like things that come from her upbringing and what has happened to her, she's starting to be a bit less passive about what's going on with her and it will be interesting to see where this is going to take her.and how she is going to deal with what has happened to her family.
I want to write half as well as Nnedi does.

It seemed like Okorafor asked herself, "What do SFF books need so they're not superficial?" And then made a checklist & checked off the boxes as she wrote. "PTSD? Check. Transfolk? Check. Break down stereotypes? Check." Binti is the only character who isn't static, and everyone keeps forcing her to change, rather than it being her choice, so its not a show of her character. By the end I didn't care anymore, even with the cool world building.

TheAromaofBooks Passive main characters are a pet peeve of mine. Frequently, when I find myself feeling mildly aggravated about a book I realize it's because things are happening TO the character instead of the character DOING things. 5y
jchawkins @TheAromaofBooks YES. Main characters should have agency! 5y
Sunraven On the subject of peeves (thanks @TheAromaofBooks 😁), checkboxing like you describe is a major one of mine. The apparent popularity of substituting checkboxing for thoughtfulness has been driving me batty lately, so reading this review is balm for my soul. 😆 It‘s nice to not feel like I‘m the only one who notices that sort of thing ... whew. 5y
See All 10 Comments
jchawkins @Sunraven 😆 same here! I think it's because social sensitivity is SUCH a thing right now. It feels like a sort of clumsy way to try to ensure diversity and sensitivity in fiction writing (but movies seem to do it a lot too, now that I think of it...). Not bad in concept, just had in practice. 5y
Sunraven The funny not-funny thing about the current environment is that it makes me feel LESS safe — and I‘m multiply marginalized, theoretically someone supposed to feel supported by it. It‘s just that if someone substitutes checkboxes for thought, they‘re probably not going to understand me as a whole person. I am not my checkboxes, duh. Some “allies” even seem to view me as an enemy because I‘m not easy enough to checkbox. So yes, bad in practice. 😉 5y
jchawkins @Sunraven yeah, one would hope minds would he kept open, but that's not the reality as often as it should be. And the culture tends to also be weirdly censoring, too, which is probably related to that. At least, that's how I feel, as one who is not nearly as marginalized as others--not sure if it feels that way for others, though. 5y
Sunraven Oh, man, don‘t get me started on the censorship. That makes me angry no matter who does it. I get the impression that a lot of people are just taking their preexisting judgemental habits, or emulating the judgemental habits of mainstream people they want to fight, and peppering them with the Right Words to “prove” they‘re sensitive, so that the thought-framework is essentially the same whether people are allies or not, but flavored differently. 5y
Sunraven ...And it hurts my heart when people commandeer social science terms and concepts to use as weapons to justify their censorship and negativity, because I went to school for anthropology and its concepts get used the opposite of the way I feel they should be ... but school was a long time ago and I‘m out of practice arguing with people over that sort of thing. Le sigh. Anyway. 😉 5y
jchawkins @Sunraven haha yeah and you need people willing to hear the argument anyway, which many aren't. Ah well. 5y
Sunraven 100% true, and ah, well, indeed. Maybe being excruciatingly empathetic will be the next trend. 🤣 5y

I really enjoyed following Binti's story as she returns home after a year at university. She has to grapple with her identity and her relationship with her family and friends, and how these have changed as she has gone out into the world.

While I really enjoyed this novella, it did feel like it dealt a bit less with sweeping themes and focused more on one individual coming of age story.

I moved right into the second Binti book right after finishing the first, and I was pleased that it‘s twice as long and more fleshed out, dealing with a few threads I felt were dropped in the first. I still wanted more of Oomza Uni (it‘s the setting I‘m most fascinated by and yet see the littlest of). But I loved seeing Binti come home and work through how she‘s changed since she left—as well as integrate other pieces of her heritage and her past.

So much world building in a slim novella. In seeking a ritual rite in her tribe, Binti discovers much she did not know of her home and has to confront her own bias in a way that hasn't been challenged before. Okorafor blends these worlds so well; we see Binti so cosmopolitan at Uni speaking to people that look like literal bugs contrast against her distaste of the savage 'Desert People' who live on the outskirts of her home village.
