I read this for July's #bookedintime challenge of historical fiction set in 17th century England. I enjoyed the more historical parts, such as the political and religious mindset of the time. The romance storyline, not so much, but that's my personal preference. I did appreciate the challenge to read about a time I'm not very familiar with! @cuilin

Cuilin I‘m also not a huge romance fan so maybe this is not for me too. Glad you enjoyed reading about this time period. 1y

Thank you so much to @MittenGirlPeach for my #muglove23 gift. I love my gift so much, and the mug is beautiful. Sorry I am running late with posting, I was a little under the weather. The tea was perfect though for helping me feel a little better.

MittenGirlPeach I hope you‘re feeling better today, and I‘m happy the tea might be helping. That‘s one of my favorites; I always have multiple boxes on hand. And I‘m pleased you like the mug! Good book club discussion on this today. There‘s plenty of historical details to draw you into the treacherous landscape of this world where the strength of women is on display even while they are constantly dismissed and abused. The romance plot develops unexpectedly and the reader‘s dread builds as the novel draws towards its inevitable conclusion.

It wasn‘t really my ☕️ but I appreciate it more after hearing from everyone who loved it.

Giving Philippa Gregory another go. These books are certainly a change from the court of Henry VIII. Charles I is about to get his head chopped off, and our main character is Alinor, a poor woman living in the tidelands and a suspected witch. I enjoyed book one, book two I found overly long and treading water after the politics of the first. That said, Philippa Gregory does write the stories of the forgotten women of history extremely well 👇

JillR I‘d binge-read Philippa Gregory‘s Tudor books years ago and overdid it I think. I thought I was a Tudor expert (so then read Wolf Hall which was another matter entirely and nearly finished me off!). 2y
TrishB I‘m not a PG fan- but did love Wolf Hall 😁 2y
JillR @trishb I always remember you‘re not a Philippa Gregory fan, not sure why that has stuck in my head! My goodness Wolf Hall was hard work. I did carry on and read the second book though, and enjoyed it slightly more. The third stares at me from the bookcase… 2y

Well I FINALLY finished this one! I started it months ago and then just put it to the side. It ended up being quite good although I really didn‘t like any of the characters other than Allinor and her son. Even her daughter really pissed me off! But I‘m excited to see where the next book takes the characters! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Book 2 finished for #SuperSeptember 😀
I loved Alinor and her story. I can‘t stand that women being accused of being witches in the past happened as frequently as it did. The methods for finding out if they were ‘witches‘ is horrible. 😟 But, I enjoyed this audiobook! 👍

Believe it or not this is the first Philippa Gregory book that I've read. She's an author I've been meaning to try and just never gotten there. So glad I've given her a try.

Although I found it a bit long I was really invested in the story, oh I was so angry at one of the characters and such great imagery. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

I really enjoyed this first book in the Fairmile Series (2 books so far). A great story set at the time of the Charles 1, the Civil War and his beheading. Very tense ending to the book and not all went the way I wanted it to. Recommended .

Very good. Start of a wonderful new series, it draws you in and stays with you long after you have finished it and I can't wait to see how the series progresses. Shows how a young woman navigates a treacherous time in history to be a woman. Also how she will do anything to protect her family.

This was my first book by P. Gregory. It won‘t be the last! I absolutely loved it.The story deals with a woman who is a commoner during the 17th century. It talks her family‘s hard life. The main character is an extremely strong woman that I admired. The book contains some great discussion questions.I hope that one of the book clubs that I am in decides to read this book so that we can go over the questions together!I highly recommend this book.

I found Tidelands was a good re-introduction into the world of reading - I've had a few year break due to contending with an anxiety disorder which meant I couldn't focus on reading. The characters were compelling, kept me turning the pages and wanting to keep with the story - it is a slow burner really. The ending was a bit sudden, a much faster pace, however there is another book in the series which explains why there felt to be an open end.

I‘ve done a lot of reading about the reign of King Charles I in England since I first finished this story six months ago—fully understanding the politics of 1600‘s England made this story more robust on my reread. Alinor Reekie the midwife and healer is strong and fierce. The story is so atmospheric and wonderful; the ending is enormous!! I had so many feelings throughout.

Very excited for the release of Dark Tides (Fairmile #2) in November!!

I stayed up way too late last night finishing this book.

I've never read anything by this author before. The popularity of her books combined with writing about people I've already read about in nonfiction sort of turned me away.

This book, however, is about regular people that she created herself. It's about the struggles faced by "real" people, living regular lives. And I loved it.

Decent enough escapism. I placed a hold on this during the middle of my Stay-at-Home life. By the time it came in for me I was ready to read something a bit more current. Not the book's fault, just a different mood than what I wanted. Elinor is a struggling woman living in England in the 1600s. I enjoyed this one but can't really say it's life-changing. In other news, our library is open! We are back to work normal hours in the building! 📚😊

From the off this book was beautifully atmospheric thanks to being set in the ever shifting tidelands. Alinor is beautiful in appearance and in her resilience and courage. Daughter of a wise woman, every day she fights to feed her family, keep her reputation and survive, which she does with unending grace. Then a stranger turns up and turns her world upside down. I felt the ending was a little abrupt but I hope that means hear more from Alinor!

YOU GUYS! This is the best book I‘ve read in a while. I want everyone to know how good it is! Alinor is a poor midwife and herbalist during the time of the witch hunts in 1648 England. She is AMAZING. The research and attention to detail in here is delicious. It‘s atmospheric and I felt like I was RIGHT THERE. Also interesting is how England handles the captured King Charles I after the English Civil War!!

Really enjoyed this book! I haven't read anything by Philippa Gregory in years. When I was in my 20s and 30s I read quite a few of her books. Alinor was a quite believable heroine and my heart went out to her with all that she had to endure, living in those times (1648-49).

This was my first Philippa Gregory and I didn‘t know what to expect. I really enjoyed the slow, pleasant pace, rich detail, and getting to know Alinor and the remote tidelands during the English Civil War. I believe this is the first in a new series, but I loved how realistically this book ended. While I enjoyed it, I don‘t plan on reading a sequel, because I felt satisfied with this story and its setting, but I‘m interested in her other books.

JacqMac If it‘s anything like her other series, it won‘t be like a sequel. Her books can all stand alone, even though they are a series. If that makes any sense. 5y
