Tale Dark & Grimm
Tale Dark & Grimm | Adam Gidwitz
39 posts | 57 read | 36 to read
Hansel and Gretel walk out of their own story and into eight other classic Grimm (and Grimm-inspired) fairy tales. An irreverent, witty narrator leads us through encounters with witches, warlocks, dragons, and the devil himself. As the siblings roam a forest brimming with menacing foes, they learn the true story behind the famous tales, as well as how to take charge of their destinies and create their own happily ever after. Because once upon a time, fairy tales were "awesome." "Unlike any children's book I've ever read. [It] holds up to multiple rereadings, like the classic I think it will turn out to be." - "New York Times Book Review" "An audacious debut that's wicked smart and wicked funny." - "Publishers Weekly," starred review "Addictively compelling." - "School Library Journal," starred review "Charming and inventive . . . the perfect haunted book." - "The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette" "One of the year's best children's books." - "The Virginian-Pilot"

Hansel and Gretel has always been one of my favorite Grimm tales—if you look deep enough, it will tell you a lot about the medieval life in that time. This book has many of the classic magic and cleverness of the old fairy tales; it is a look into the gaps of the siblings‘ lives that we never knew. And it is delightfully gory.

He invites girls to this house, and he reaches down their throats and rips their souls from their bodies, and he traps the souls in cages in the form of doves, to let them rot under his eaves. Then he hacks the girls‘ bodies to pieces to make our supper.

Meh. Listened in audio and it didn‘t do a great job of keeping my attention. That‘s sad because it should have being a fairy tale retelling. Perhaps it was timing. Certainly the intended middle grade audience would probably appreciate this one.

Allylu I didn't like it either. 1y

Hmmm…this one was weird. I listened to the audiobook. At times, it was unbelievable. Was that the intention? I think so, yes. Even though the cover looks middle grade, I do not recommend it for children. Hansel & Gretel are the MCs, there are beheadings, monsters, dragons, the devil and his grandma. The narrator is sarcastic and makes up for the creep - kind of. #91 #BookSpin #BFC22 #FAIRYTALE #SuperSeptember #AutumnBingo2022 blue-cover; 3 stars

AnnR Way to go, @Allylu! That really is a strikingly pretty blue cover but it's too bad the story was disappointing. 2y

⭐⭐⭐⭐⚡
I have always loved Fairy Tales, and was shocked, while in a Children's Literature class in university, to learn that the original fairy tales were far less... innocent. This book is along the vein of the original tales, and I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for young children - it's pretty grim, no pun intended. I certainly enjoyed it, though.

Amazing & clever little book with hilarious narration & breaking of the fourth wall that had me giggling. It's perfectly dark, but still somehow delivered in a light, bubbly manner. The imagination & creativity mixed with Grimm's original tales made for a fantastic read I couldn't put down. Recommended for mature middle grade audiences who can handle a little violence/gore as well as any middle grade loving adults. This one is a gem!

This book was a wonderful retake on a classic fairytale; not for its content, but it‘s ingenuity! It‘s storyteller, the very author himself who peppers in his own comments throughout, has spun a tale of two children by using famous Grim Brothers Fairytales and weaving Hansel and Gretel through its twists and turns! It was undoubtedly clever! Very dark children‘s story though; the author does not wish young children to be present while reading.

What a fun read! I couldn‘t put this one down. Very cleverly done how it weaves together the story of Hansel and Gretel with other classic fairytales. One of my favorite retellings. I need to pick up the other books in this series stat. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

1. Beauty & the Beast and Hansel & Gretel. Tagged is a middle grade book with a loose take on fairy tales starring Hansel & Gretel.
2. Gaston! He's such a f*ck boy. The Wheelers from Return to Oz also stand out as creepy bastards.
3. Disney's animated Beauty & the Beast, Return to Oz, and Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella from 1965.

A friend‘s mom donated to me a bunch of books for my library, but they were more suited for a middle-aged woman traveling Europe and watching how much bread she eats, so...I took them into Central Book Exchange and was able to exchange them for these books that are more suited for my junior high readers. Plus, technically these books weren‘t available for exchange, but the nice lady gave me a discount since I‘m a teacher! #Score #TeachersofLitsy

If you like fairy tales, especially retellings, reimaginings, and fractured farcical versions of older more serious stoires. This is for you! It is absolutely awesome. And while I fully understand that it is intended for younger children, like all fairy tales (or good children‘s books), it is worth reading as an adult.

"A tale dark and Grimm" is a dark retelling of some of the Grimm's tales, first of all the "Hansel and Gretel" story. This is a story for children that are bored with all the sugary stories. Because that book is full of creepy, dark and scary stories. But it's just not a book for kids. There is a psychological meaning behind every tale.

I am extremely pissed right now - excuse my language, but man it's so true I don't even want to try and sound polite 😡😡😡This was NOT the edition I wanted and I had double checked on Amazon to order the right one and it took weeks for this to be shipped. I really want to dump it right away in the bin, seriously. The only reason I haven't done it, is because it's not the book's fault, but damn it, i really don't want to read it anymore 😤

Tsubame @Sarah83 No idea, but next time I'll write to the seller beforehand, just to make sure. Of course I could get the right edition on Amazon, but it is just really irritating me that I'll have to buy the book again and wait for the shipping again as well 😤 7y

Fun trilogy for #fairytaleretelling theme today on #photoadaynov16. Hansel and Gretel wander out of their story and into many many others. Quite a humorous and wild ride story to story, but the narrator is very upfront about the Grimm-ness - people do die and other grim happenings occur.
As they should in proper fairy tales 😉
