I understand how important this book is. I just couldn't get into it. I believe myself an ally, and I thought this book had a lot to teach me, but I got about 25% in and thought, maybe it was written for someone else. This is a highly banned book and I‘m happy to say I‘ve finally read it. It is a sex ed guide for YA but it misses the mark. It doesn‘t discuss intersex or trans folx in detail the way it does gay and bi. NB aren‘t mentioned at all. Some of the language is transphobic and harmful. If you are advocating for trans folx, you should not ever use language that mirrors that of transphobic voices. Ever. Maybe the new edition is better? This is a ⬇️

I wanted to read this especially because it is so highly banned. It is a great resource for teens & others who have questions about their identity or sexuality but also a tool for parents & others who want to better understand their loved ones. I found the humor to be a bit jarring at times but overall Dawson does a good job explaining the basics of living a queer life - the good & bad

Kicking off #pride month with this great #audiobook. Full of wit, information, and understanding, I recommend this to anyone wanting to learn more about what it means to be gay, transgender, queer, and how to be an ally to all of the wonderful variation of humans with whom we are blessed to live. This book is fabulous! It‘s blunt, yes, but I think that‘s a very good thing. It‘s also funny and witty. I‘m so glad that there are books like this for young people to read!

#pop23 - a book that‘s been banned or challenged in any state in 2022

This is an excellent book. It's aimed at young people, and as such the writing style made me feel like a grumpy old woman ("why is this in capitals? Why are you shouting? What does this slang even mean?"), which probably means it's doing its job. It's refreshingly honest and plain speaking, and there's a very good chapter aimed at parents/carers and links to helpful websites at the back.

#ReadHarder challenge 12: a book that‘s been challenged recently in your school district/library OR read one of the most-challenged/banned books of the year by a queer and/or BIPOC author. Borrowed from Oldham Library, who happily don't do censorship.

I've been reading this book for my church's summer book club and it is awesome! I can't think of anyone who couldn't get something from this book.
This is a YA book on all the ins and outs of the LGBTQ+ world. This book is BLUNT! So I'd say 13 and up. But I have had people disagree with me on this on both ends saying 13 is too young or that kids as young as 10 could read this. So just take a look beforehand.

3) I really am no good at book clubs but I do join my church's summer book club every year. This year we are reading the YA book "This Book is Gay"

The main reason that I read this book was to educate myself more on the LGBTQS2+ community, especially for the workplace. This book was amazing! It was very informative and hilarious! I laughed out loud quite a few times! I would definitely recommend this book for everyone.

Banned Books Week: Day 3!

I chose three books today instead of just one because they all feature LGBTQ+ content and, sadly, books with queer characters and themes are always among the most challenged and/or banned every year. The tagged book in particular was banned because it 'portrayed homosexuality in a non judgemental way.' 😡

This Book is Gay is a guide for young people on the things no one seems to tell you when you are gay/lesbian/questioning. It‘s so positive and necessary for young people, and I feel it would help those in need know they are normal and not alone. It‘s by no means all-inclusive but is great for what it is, so of course it‘s been #banned. 🙄

This is brilliant. I can imagine reading this would be so inspirational and just generally awesome for so many of my school LGBTQ+ group. I never pass on books to others, but I think going to give this one to a colleague who I think will like it. 🌈🏳️‍🌈😻📚📖

I tried to start another queer memoir but they are often sad and I can‘t do anymore sad right now.

My current library's pretty small, but they still managed to squeeze in a Pride display.

I have purchased this but for my closest friends and family members to help them understand my lifestyle and to answer the questions that they don't want to ask. It also so help me to understand some of the terms and language that the lbgt community has adopted.

Wow. Starting of with a strong one. This book is AMAZING. It's so educational and taught me so much even though I'm gay. It's one of those books that I think should be read in schools,in PSHE lessons because teens need to know about this stuff and it's not taught in schools. I would defiantly recommend to anyone, not just the LGBT community. 🏳️‍🌈❤️

I also consulted a list, and found this one that I have reviewed http://childrensbooksdaily.com/lgtb-fiction-books-for-a-ya-audience/ as part of a longer LGTBQIA post. There is nothing subtle about it, so it brings undue attention to itself. It's very information, full of humour and empathy, and made me sad that these kids are marginalised so much. I will link to the banned books article in the comments.

This book is the beginning of a wonderful series, each novel featuring another gay couple. I call these my "reading fast food" and usually read them when life gets a little hard because I know that I'll always get a happy ending!

Check out this #BookMail I got today! I've been wanting to read some LGBTQ non-fiction for young people for a while, and this is the first one I'm going to try. Thanks to Source Books for sending me a review copy! #QueerBooks #TransBooks

It took me so long to find the time to read it, but I finally did it. It's absolutely wonderful. I love the style, the author is so funny, their wit is amazing. I fell in love with this book, not only because Larry Stylinson is mentioned (cough cough), but also because it's actually stuffed with information about coming out, sexualities in general and everything that has to do with gay culture. 100/10

The writer has a couple of good points and the book is funny I just found it hard to enjoy because of some of the more transphobic parts. I definitely don't believe that he wrote the book in a transphobic way on purpose but that it's more a lack of knowledge. If you can ignore the transphobic parts it's a genuinely funny very queer book and a book I think could actually be helpful for people.

Put my book down to answer my phone and giggled. So are my socks, James Dawson 🏳️‍🌈
