These Shallow Graves
These Shallow Graves | Jennifer Donnelly
From Jennifer Donnelly, the critically acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of A Northern Light and Revolution, comes a mystery about dark secrets, dirty truths, and the lengths to which people will go for love and revenge. For fans of Elizabeth George and Libba Bray, These Shallow Graves is the story of how much a young woman is willing to risk and lose in order to find the truth. Jo Montfort is beautiful and rich, and soonlike all the girls in her classshell graduate from finishing school and be married off to a wealthy bachelor. Which is the last thing she wants. Jo dreams of becoming a writera newspaper reporter like the trailblazing Nellie Bly. Wild aspirations aside, Jos life seems perfect until tragedy strikes: her father is found dead. Charles Montfort shot himself while cleaning his pistol. One of New York Citys wealthiest men, he owned a newspaper and was a partner in a massive shipping firm, and Jo knows he was far too smart to clean a loaded gun. The more Jo hears about her fathers death, the more something feels wrong. Suicide is the only logical explanation, and of course people have started talking, but Jos father would never have resorted to that. And then she meets Eddiea young, smart, infuriatingly handsome reporter at her fathers newspaperand it becomes all too clear how much she stands to lose if she keeps searching for the truth. But now it might be too late to stop. The past never stays buried forever. Life is dirtier than Jo Montfort could ever have imagined, and this time the truth is the dirtiest part of all.Praise for These Shallow Graves:"These Shallow Graves delivered all that I adore: lovely prose, historical intrigue, unique characters and setting. I listened to the audiobook and was not impressed. I felt like the performer read so fast, especially with the dialog. It was the first time I've ever had to change the reading speed, and it still felt way too fast.

I have always enjoyed reading Donnelly's books, but this one was NOT my favorite, and it was rough to get through. The romance aspect was odd, and it could've been 200 pages shorter. It did have a twist near the end.

When I first started reading this book, I felt like the storyline was too fasted paced with some got-cha moments. However, once the story settles, I found the storyline enjoyable and am happy with my first pick for #WomenReading.

Have to say I didn't enjoy this one as much as others by her. Fave is still A Northern Light. This one is very YA, where every turn is totally predictable. Nice bit is MC's inspiration from Nellie Bly and 10 Days in a Madhouse. #MagnificentMarch #AboutMentalIllness #coffeeandabook @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620 For suspenseful and engaging novel similarly inspired, read Woman 99

Meh. I really wanted to like this one, but it draaaaaaaaaaaagged so badly! I almost bailed on several occasions. There were a ton of red herrings at points when it was painfully apparent what was going on. The last 25% of the book was very good, but not enough to make it a pick. 2/5🌟

Another #yawednesday mystery pick. This is a historical fiction, early 20th cetury New York. An upper-crust young lady finds her world shattered by her father's supposed suicide, but things aren't adding up. She delves into New York's working world and underbelly to sort things out. (I have to admit I thought this could have been done better, but it's not bad, and I think young teens will like it better than I did)

One of the books I‘ve been reading is These Shallow Graves, picked for me by my husband. I‘ve really been enjoying it. The main character, Jo is a strong-willed young woman who isn‘t going to be ruled by social constructs.
My cousin, Ella gave me this notebook and handmade the bookmark that‘s on it. I‘ve been writing in it several times a day. I don‘t think I‘ve ever enjoyed journaling so much! 💕

I had such a hard time putting this book down! I loved how Jo was written and her romance with Eddie. I particularly love that the romance doesn't end in a "they lived happily ever after" way that focused soley on the romance. Jo does a great job of showing sexism of the time, contrast between the rich and poor as well as so much growth and inner analysis. My only complaint was that I saw the murderer unmasking several chapters before.

lovintoread Sounds like a good book.good review (edited) 6y

I love Donnelly‘s writing! I was able to figure out a bit more of this historical mystery sooner than I would have liked, but the characters, setting, and examination of society and the roles of women and girls more than made up for it.

This is my second book by this author and I will definitely be reading more 📚📚📚

Finished this audiobook today - a YA mystery set in historical New York. A wealthy girl who wants to be the next Nellie Bly finds out her father was murdered and sets out to solve the mystery, with the help of a handsome and ambitious reporter. I really enjoyed the touches of early forensic science, too.

I've been having a really hard time deciding what I want to read lately. And I've been having a hard time concentrating on my reading.
I've been taking breaks from reading but nothing seems to be helping and my anxiety level is just so high and normally reading helps .... I'm just so confused.

Utopiyll I completely understand! 💕 I had to go on a reading break for about 7 months/ a year because anxiety/ concentration and all these other things! I just wouldn't push yourself, reading is about enjoyment after all, I had to find other ways to lessen my anxiety (like exercise, breathing exercises, thinking everything through) for that amount of time before everything calmed down and I could read and do my other hobbies again 💕 7y
nicole_in_neverland @utopiyll I don't think I've ever had to pause my reading that long but maybe that's what I need. I've been trying do watch Netflix and write and draw so hopefully that will help with things 7y
