Tale of Two Cities (Anniversary)
Tale of Two Cities (Anniversary) | Charles Dickens
The French Revolution comes to vivid life in Charles Dickens's famous novel about the best of times and the worst of times... The storming of the Bastille the death carts with their doomed human cargo the swift drop of the guillotine blade this is the French Revolution that Charles Dickens vividly captures in his famous work "A Tale of Two Cities." With dramatic eloquence, he brings to life a time of terror and treason, a starving people rising in frenzy and hate to overthrow a corrupt and decadent regime. With insight and compassion, Dickens casts his novel of unforgettable scenes with some memorable characters: the sinister Madame Defarge, knitting her patterns of death; the gentle Lucie Manette, unswerving in her devotion to her broken father; Charles Darnay, the lover with a secret past; and dissolute Sydney Carton, whose unlikely heroism gives his life meaning. With an Introduction by Frederick Busch and an Afterword by A. N. Wilson"

I had not read this before although had of course heard the famous first and last lines. Pleased to say I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Set in the time of the French Revolution in both England and France, this story is populated with some marvellous characters, not least Carton, Dr Marnette and Lorry. The plot is a little farfetched; coincidences are rife and the villains are almost caricatures; but I love Dickens nonetheless.

A tale set during the French Revolution.

The first two thirds of the books was impossible to follow, the last third was quite good. I am not entirely sure what happened and had to read the synopsis on Wikipedia to really understand what happened in the book.

Texreader It‘s so ridiculous that this is required reading in high school. No one ever understands it! 2y

This one took me longer than expected to read, and I ended up finishing it in the car. I have to say, this was a really good book although I have the feeling that The French Revolution was simplified a bit too much, but that might just be me. Nonetheless, I‘d give this book, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5

Awk_Word_Smith Dickens is one of my favorite writers. ❤️ 2y

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. I don‘t know why I waited so long to read this classic. It was such a good story! I had to refer to the literary synopsis online often, due to the time and the style this book was written in. After reading this, I will definitely be reading more books written by Charles Dickens.

Sobering, even dystopian. In Tale of Two Cities, the French Revolution is visible on the horizon when the book opens. Appreciated the full bodied characters for all classes of society. Working class Jerry and Miss Pross, men o‘ business Lorry and Carton, the genteel Manettes and aristocrat Evremonde, all are afforded a fair and full backstory. Note to self: don‘t wait so long between Dickens novels.

After my third attempt in 25 years and reading classics, I can finally say I appreciate this book and understand the psychology that Dickens wanted to share in his writing. Doctor Manette's agony was so realistic, Madame Defarge's #revenge was without any compassion, and Sydney Carton's sacrifice so visceral.

There are some plot points I still don't understand - Cruncher's meanness to his wife or the short paragraph of Lucie's son.

Ruthiella Yay! Timing can be important. I love Dickens, but didn‘t start reading him till my 40s. 3y

When the story begins it‘s 1775 and as the story changes between London and Paris the years move along too

In the middle Dickens lost me a little bit, but he‘s such a masterful storyteller that he pulls me in again

In the end Dickens shows how children and grandchildren can‘t be held responsible for their parents/ grandparents mistakes, how you can‘t live your life based on hate, how love is stronger than anything and will always win in the end.

#whattheDickens I know I‘m a week behind. I‘ll be a better host as soon as school gets out. So Carton loves Lucie too. Cruncher is a resurrectionist. Gaspard was tortured to death. Darnay confirms he is an Evremonde and we know Madame Defarge has condemned all Evremondes. 😳 This does not bode well. Lucie and Darnay marry.

A Tale of Two Cities Book 2 Ch‘s 7 -12
Well! A child was runover by a carriage, perpetrator of said crime was stabbed in their bed. Thank you, Jacques! We‘re heading for revolution though. Things in France are getting rather sticky. Dr. Manette does not want to know Darnay‘s true name and background. I‘m loving Caton‘s sarcasm that goes right over Stryver‘s head.
#whattheDickens

Lcsmcat When I read this as a teenager I missed so much! But Stryver‘s arrogance was portrayed so hilariously! I love how Dickens draws characters. 3y
Cuilin @Lcsmcat you took the words right out of my mouth. I was too young my first time reading this to understand the sarcasm and satire. Loving it now. 3y
See All 11 Comments
Butterfinger @Lcsmcat another abusive husband. I just cringe. I feel that Dickens is poking fun of the superstitious with Cruncher. 3y
Amiable The absolute callousness and disregard for human life when the carriage rolled over the child was shocking! I was also particularly struck in ch, 7 by Dickens' skill in setting up the monseigneur's character using a description of his facial features -- the dents in his nose, the lines of his mouth and eyes, etc. And the last paragraph of ch 7 with its juxtaposition between the wealthy party guests & the poor “rats“ was sheer perfection. 3y
Lcsmcat @Amiable That was difficult to read, but Dickens uses it well to illustrate the attitudes of the day among a certain class, doesn‘t he? 3y
Lcsmcat @Butterfinger Yes, he uses Cruncher to poke fun at a lot, doesn‘t he? 3y
Amiable @Lcsmcat Absolutely! Dickens was a master of description with a sharp wit and satirical commentary that leaves a reader simultaneously entertained and cringing. I'm glad to be reading this as an adult with the proper appreciation for his work. (edited) 3y
Cuilin @Amiable the disregard by throwing coins onto the streets as though that is sufficient compensation for the death of a child. Dickens makes it clear who our heroes and villains are. 3y
Lcsmcat @Cuilin @Amiable He does make it clear who you‘re supposed to root for. If only all the villains in real life were also ugly, and all the heroes handsome. 😂 3y
Amiable @Lcsmcat Ha ha! If you haven‘t seen it, that‘s literally the plot of the movie “Shallow Hal” with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jack Black! 😀 3y

Mehso-so

I had heard about how romantic and wonderful this book was so maybe I expected too much, but this will have to join Hard Times one of my least favorite Dickens. There were definitely wonderful moments- Lucie standing under her husband‘s prison looking longingly up comes to mind- but it just felt so thin compared to some of his other works. However, the pace was unusually quick for Dickens and there were some truly harrowing but memorable moments.
