Common Sense
Common Sense | Thomas Paine
Enormously popular and widely read pamphlet, first published in January of 1776, clearly and persuasively argues for American separation from Great Britain and paves the way for the Declaration of Independence. This highly influential landmark document attacks the monarchy, cites the evils of government and combines idealism with practical economic concerns.

Paine‘s passion against a monarchical government is present in this short treatise. It may be short, but it packs a punch.

250 years later, it‘s a reminder of the struggle for independence in the American colonies. I‘m glad I took the time to revisit this and ponder how much this relates to today‘s political climate.

Librarybelle @Butterfinger @TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread @kspenmoll @IriDas So sorry I did not follow up sooner—yesterday was not a good mental health day. I‘m glad I read this…I hope this reading brought you what you had hoped, whether it is the feeling of hope or better understanding past struggles or even how eerily similar the struggles are between then and now. Thank you! 1w
kspenmoll Please do not apologize for taking care of yourself! I read it in spurts & it helped reinforce just what our founders were thinking, hoping, & felt forced to do-demand independence from England. And fight a war to get it. (edited) 1w

Deblovestoread Agree with @kspenmoll Taking care of yourself is the most important thing. The rest will happen when it happens. I didn‘t make very good progress. My Libby copy didn‘t give me an option to open on my kindle and I hate reading on my phone. So I‘m going to get a physical copy and try again. 1w

I have finally read this important document that reasoned with colonists to break away from the tyranny of a British king. He used Scriptures and history and just plain common sense to support his claim. I don't understand why I have never been asked to read it, but I thank @Librarybelle for the push. It is very readable and it is still relevant after 250 years.

TheBookHippie It was a good reread for me. We had to read it in highschool. 1w

GingerAntics I had a student come in with an essay claiming that Thomas Paine argued that Americans should eat Irish children and how horrible people were in colonial times for doing this… the kid was assigned to read Common Sense and a Modest Proposal and was supposed to write about the power of political pamphlets as persuasive writing. My head hurts again just typing this. Clearly he didn‘t understand satire or that he read two different pamphlets. (edited) 1w
kspenmoll @GingerAntics OMG!!!!!😱🤯😳🤦🏼‍♀️ 1w
GingerAntics @kspenmoll yeah! I was SO confused when I was reading his paper because I kept thinking Common Sense doesn‘t even mention Irish children… it doesn‘t even use those two words. It wasn‘t until I asked to see the instructions that I figured out what happened. 1w
GingerAntics @kspenmoll he also would not believe me that A Modest Proposal was satire. He insisted that one of the many atrocities of the British colonists was cannibalism, mainly of Irish children. He somehow concluded that Irish children must have tasted better and been more beef like. 🤯🤦🏼‍♀️🥃 1w

Vladimir & I are ready! I suspect I‘ll read parts throughout the day & let them simmer. I think it‘s remarkable that nearly 250 years after its publication Paine‘s words still resonate. For me, I‘m hoping this read helps me reflect on history & the current political dynamic.

Paine, a man with no prospects, helped ignite the colonies with this work. Anyone can be a hero.

What do you hope to learn/gain from today‘s reading?

Butterfinger I don't think I have ever read it - only parts in social studies, and that's a maybe. I want to see the parallelism of the two eras - creation of modern democracy and today. I am ashamed that I haven't already read it. I minored in history, for heaven's sake. . 1w
Librarybelle @TheBookHippie @kspenmoll @Butterfinger I read this for my AP Government class 25 years ago when we dove into pre-Revolution writings and the new nation‘s Federalist and Anti-Federalist writings. I don‘t think I‘m quite ready to dive into those writings quite yet! 😂 1w

• Started out strong and tapered off at the halfway point; I suppose it was just the antiquated language and the unfamiliar historical laws of the time which bored me a lot. Highly intellectual read and I did enjoy the first half more than I expected. Still a so-so read, overall. Plan to read more Paine though •

My first read of 2019. I‘m giving it a pick because I think it‘s important that we are well versed in our country‘s history - and that includes the racism and sexism of the founding ideas. I don‘t believe the founders or their influencers are beyond reproach- we can appreciate what they did brilliantly, but we must also deal with what they got wrong or we‘ll never move forward.

You have to meet a book where it lives, not where you want it to be. After this was mentioned in several of the presidential biographies I‘d read, I thought I should read it. When I take off my 21st Century glasses and think like someone in the 1700‘s, I understand how this pamphlet reignited (and in some cases ignited) passion for independence from Great Britain. There was a LOT going on in this time period and it was interesting to read this.

TrishB That‘s a very good comment when you‘re dealing with sexism, racism and bigotry in general for older books! 7y
AshleyHoss820 @TrishB It‘s difficult when reading and those issues come up. 😕 I‘ve found it easier to remember when the book was written. 😊 7y

This political piece using the appeal of religious zeal and hatred of “the other” is painful to read, though he does make a sound argument to fell the divine right of kings. Also, the morbid irony of his criticism against the so-called “slavery” the British colonists experience under the King‘s rule and William the Conqueror‘s invasion of England “against the consent of the natives...” I really want to smack him with his hypocrisy. @SerialReader

Trashcanman I bailed on this one. I just couldn't hang with it. 7y
Megara @Trashcanman I can‘t blame you! It took me a long time to get through it. I could complain about Common Sense all day long. Haha 7y
