I watched The Alienist tv show before reading this. It turns out that the show was pretty faithful to the book. I felt that the book was a little easier for me to understand. I liked this story of a hunt for a serial killer in 1896 New York. I especially enjoyed the character Sara, one of only 2 women employed by the police department. The police procedures of the time were very interesting. I liked the use of psychological profiling.

Interesting historical fiction. At points, slow, but worth the read!

My mom has been telling me to read this for years and years. I really need to start listening to her, because she was right as usual... it was excellent! Now I need to watch the show!

Weekend reading plans… I‘ve got 3 VERY different books going right now! I‘d like to finish The Alienist this weekend as I have the audio and plan to spend the day gardening tomorrow

This is a well written historical mystery of a serial killer set in NYC in 1896. I loved the details pertaining to criminology, psychology, profiling and forensics.

I started reading this quite some time ago and never finished. Just listened on audio. Great NYC setting. Interesting history on psychology and crime fighting. Quite gruesome.

DNF‘d at 19%.

I found Carr‘s writing dry, overly descriptive, more telling than showing, and detached. It read more like a report than a novel. I also couldn‘t connect with the characters.

I would read a few pages, put the book down. Then I‘d force myself to pick it up again. I gave up at page 95. My TBR is too long to try to force myself to read a book I‘m not enjoying.

This was my #roll100 pick 2.

BuzzFeed says this is one of the 16 books everyone should read by the time they‘re 30. Since I‘m well overdue, here‘s me playing catch up. 😂😂

Loved the 1890s history of NYC wrapped in a mystery. Found myself researching a lot; I LOVE when a book makes me do that! This book was like CRIMINAL MINDS' techniques applied in the 19th century. Plus, the writer's dad was “the glue“ of the Beat generation = total geeky awesomeness. #randomfact

I read this and its sequel when I was a teen. I vaguely recall this being an interesting read. Like any decent detective story, the protagonists have to follow the clues!

There were a lot of words written to tell this story…and they weren‘t all necessary. Some characters and plot lines seemed clunky or forced, but the setting of Guilded Age New York was interesting.

#NSR221 @Nessavamusic Historical Mystery, I don't usually read these but when I do I enjoy them. It is really interesting how we have cone a long way with understanding seriel killers and profiling them.

Is there anything more annoying than downloading an audiobook after a long waitlist, only to discover it‘s an abridged edition?! I went back and checked, and not once does it mention being abridged in the item description… ugh!
The good news is that I managed to find an unabridged copy through one of the *many* libraries I subscribe to 🤣

This is your sign not to annotate your books. I read this in 6th grade and annotated it for school. Past me absolutely terrorized present me. She simply could not shut up. Neither an unmarked page nor moment of insight.
Book was OK. Plot moves a little slow, but it was interesting. Characters felt like they had developed lives outside of the story.

It took me a while to listen to but I liked the pacing and I liked that there wasn‘t an overpowering romance. I liked Lazlo. And I‘m always giddy when TR makes an appearance.

Look what I found (see my last post)! I was determined to find this book on my bookshelves after watching the tv adaptation. Looking behind & under books. I knew that I had one copy. I had forgotten that I have two copies, but now I recall the bewildering fact that I liked the tv tie-in edition as much as the original paperback edition. So I kept it when I brought it home even when realizing that I already owned it. I am so eager to read this now!

There is no excuse. I couldn‘t locate the book on my shelves. It‘s been an incredibly long time since I purchased it. I thought that I might get some motivation to really look for it by taking just a little peep at the tv adaptation. It was so good. I couldn‘t help myself. I watched the WHOLE thing! Well-acted! Superbly eerie! Wonderfully mysterious!

Now, I‘ll be up all night looking for the book!👀

This book is a So-so as it went on too long for me.I got impatient and a little bored.
The author did create memorable detail of NYC‘s underbelly,with its catacomb like tunnels,its houses of ill repute,its child sex trafficking,its gritty street life,its impoverished “hidden” underclass.Well written characters,among them,a journalist,a first female police person,an “alienist”,appearances by Teddy Roosevelt also prevented me from bailing.

Slow going but this book is worth it! Drinking morning coffee while waiting for my car‘s oil to be changed, safety check. It‘s a 2005 Ford Taurus that was my mom‘s- hoping to nurse it along until used car rates go down ( hopefully) in autumn. Just thinking how lucky I am to be a reader- waiting time goes so fast!!! I am drinking in the birds‘ song that surrounds me, along with an occasional baby rooster crow. My neighbors raise chickens & with this group of eggs they got a baby rooster. His sound is definitely cock a doddle do, but in a fainter, shortened version. It‘s very early morning, it feels like I am the only one up outside in this world. Grateful I have this to enjoy before work.

Other than the length and the noticeably high use of the word “monotonous,” it was enjoyable. I love Criminal Minds and history so this was a nice combination.

This was exactly what hoped it would be. Long but good.

Kids are watching Dr. Doolittle, I am still reading the Alienist. This book is exactly what I was hoping for, I wish I had more time to read it. Helping my son with his research paper has taken up most of my week.

I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would but it's still a pretty good read. Easy to get into but it gets a little "blah" the further into it you get. Not the worst book by far but not really the best ?‍♀️

Going to add it to my #readathons later on

A great read. Extremely detailed and full of fascinating characters (some fictional, some historical), it blended elements of a thriller and a period piece and a “rag-tag band of misfits” tale, all for a thoroughly enjoyable story. Particularly interesting for those curious about the earliest applications of psychological theory in criminal investigation/profiling. Like a late Victorian-era Mindhunter.

I haven‘t read the David Simon book, but the series is one of my all time favorites.
