Forecasting: Methods and Applications | Spyros G. Makridakis, Rob J. Hyndman
28 posts | 1 read
Since accurate forecasting requires more than just inserting historical data into a model, Forecasting: Methods and Applications, 3/e, adopts a managerial, business orientation. Integrated throughout this text is the innovative idea that explaining the past is not adequate for predicting the future. Inside, you will find the latest techniques used by managers in business today, discover the importance of forecasting and learn how it's accomplished. And you'll develop the necessary skills to meet the increased demand for thoughtful and realistic forecasts. New features in the third edition include an emphasis placed on the practical uses of forecasting; all data sets used in this book are available on the Internet; comprehensive coverage provided on both quantitative and qualitative forecasting techniques; and includes many new developments in forecasting methodology and practice.

#weeklyforecast

Started the top two already and LOVING both of them. They both also fit #booked2021 prompts.

I need to start on a new audiobook this week and quite fancy the Yoon, which is set in #laos. #readingasia2021

Then, later in the week, @rockpools and I are going to attempt a #buddyread of the Vuong, for #vietnam.

Looking forward to the #bookspinbingo numbers too of course!

rockpools You‘re finding SUCH interesting books for Reading Asia! 3y
TrishB Some good ones there 👍🏻 3y
squirrelbrain That one is from Scribd @rockpools. It‘s such a shame I can‘t go to The Leeds Library though.... they deliver books, but their online catalogue isn‘t great - nothing like being able to see the actual books! Maybe in a few months.... 3y

Cinfhen Ohhhh, super curious about the Yoon !!!! 3y
Moray_Reads On Earth is a beautiful book. I hope you enjoy it 3y
quietlycuriouskate Ocean Vuong's book is astonishing, though there's a disturbing bit near the start that I wish I hadn't read because I haven't been able to forget it since. 3y
squirrelbrain I‘m looking forward to it @Moray_Reads - although you‘ve rather worried me now @kathedron..... be warned @rockpools 3y
quietlycuriouskate No spoilers but I'll say one word: monkey 3y
Megabooks The Vuong is totally beautiful! 3y
Caroline2 Glad to hear The Survivors is good. Think I‘ll skip this buddy read tho if that‘s ok? I‘m reading a thriller at the mo then I fancy some historical escapism so I‘ll save Harper for when I‘m in the mood. 👍 3y
squirrelbrain That‘s totally fine @Caroline2 - once I started it I couldn‘t stop and now I‘ve nearly finished anyway! 3y

I‘ll need to finish 5 books by midnight Thursday if I want to reach 250 books...so if you have ideas for short audiobooks or good novellas please share below!!! @Reviewsbylola introduced me to the importance of choosing your #FirstRead at the start of each New Year....it sets the tone. Last year I read Olive Kitteridge and it was PHENOMENAL, so hoping my fiction and #NF choices won‘t disappoint 🤞🏼🤞🏼Excited for all the new reading challenges♥️

vivastory I'm a firm believer first read of the year. Mine was Stoner. 💙 3y
Reggie Ring Shout was 176 pages. It was pretty good. 3y
Reggie Kim Jiyoung Born in 1982 is also 176 pages. 3y
See All 26 Comments
Reggie b, Book, and Me 168 pgs. 3y
squirrelbrain I definitely need to consider my first read of the year too. Which country are you using the Boyne for? - I can see there‘s a few possibilities there.... 3y
squirrelbrain This is short but devastating, if you can get it on audio. Might be good for a re-listen even if you‘ve read it before. 3y
vivastory @squirrelbrain recommendation of Steinbeck reminds me of another Steinbeck that I read several years ago & enjoyed. A novella 3y
Kalalalatja I‘m planning my first book of the new year, too, but I haven‘t picked one yet, but it will have to be a good one! 😅🤞 3y
TrishB I‘ll have to remind myself which is the first day of the year! Hopefully it will be when my son gets home 🤞🏻🤞🏻 3y
Cinfhen Oh wow @vivastory I I haven‘t read the Pearl since 8th grade / that‘s a good one!!! I just re-read OMAM last year @squirrelbrain it is a good one. So sad 💔 (edited) 3y
Cinfhen I‘ll look into Ring Shout @Reggie I‘m saving Kim Jiyoung for 2021! 💓💓💓 (edited) 3y
Cinfhen I‘m planning on using the Boyd for Palestine @squirrelbrain we shall see.... #FirstRead is DEFINITELY a THING @Kalalalatja @vivastory 3y
Cinfhen Was J not with you for Xmas @TrishB 😭😭😭???? 3y
TrishB No 😢 fingers crossed flight doesn‘t get cancelled on 1st Jan. He‘s in Belfast. 3y
Cinfhen Definitely fingers crossed/ toes too🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 @TrishB (edited) 3y
Megabooks My first book last year was Girl, Woman, Other and it was amazing! My favorite short book this year was Keep Moving by Maggie Smith - 2.5 hours audio. The Body Is Not an Apology which both @britt_brooke and I really enjoyed is short too. Evidence of the Affair by TJR is available on Audible Plus is about 2 hours. Elizabeth Avecedo‘s books are fairly short on audio and excellent! Fauci on Audible Plus is very good. About 3 hours. 3y
Megabooks Hope this helps! 3y
KarenUK Great short audios... world of wonders (nature/memoir) and A monster calls is sad but fantastic. Orkney by Amy sackville is a favorite novella of mine... and Nick Hornby‘s State of the Union is short and fun. Or the NYRB A Month in the Country is lovely. I‘m thinking this tagged one might be my first in 2021 as it is a #doubledip for some challenges and I hear is fab. (I love the author on instagram- he‘s so great on mental health stuff) (edited) 3y
KarenUK Oh, and my 2 recent kids audios were both lovely.... The Tale of Despereaux & The Case of the Missing Marquis 3y
britt_brooke I definitely second The Body is Not an Apology. SO GOOD. @Megabooks 💚💚 3y
britt_brooke If you like snarky science fiction, the Murderbot novellas are entertaining and only about 3 hours each on audio. There‘s one novel, too, but I haven‘t gotten that far yet. I‘m on 3rd novella. 3y
Cinfhen Thanks SO MUCH for the recommendations @britt_brooke @KarenUK @Megabooks Going to research right now💗 3y
Cinfhen Midnight Library is HIGH UP my list too @KarenUK 3y
Centique @britt_brooke omg I LOVE Murderbot. This usually means that Cindy will hate it 😂😂 but we can hope 🤞🤞 3y
Cinfhen Hahaha @Centique I don‘t think it‘s for me but I‘m willing to try @britt_brooke unfortunately I‘m out of Hoopla borrows for December 😩so I need to give it a go in 2021 😜 3y

#bookreport & #weeklyforecast

Finished...
- My least favorite McEwan ( I normally love him) but this one was only so-so....
- I loved Wordslut! My favorite kind of Non fiction... informative and funny! Thank you so much for the gift Helen @squirrelbrain

Just started....
- An audio of the first Enola Holmes book... adorable!
- An #ARC of Summer water, which I know has been out in the UK for a while, but doesn‘t come out in US until January....

Cinfhen Looks great 😍I‘m curious about this one....I‘m not sure it‘s for me....what do you think..... 3y
squirrelbrain Glad you loved Wordslut! @Cinfhen - I think you‘d like it too. I listened to it on Scribd - it was laugh-out-loud funny, but informative and thought-provoking too. 3y
KarenUK I agree with Helen... I think you‘d like it on audio.... I loved it so much, I‘m picking it as a book for my bookclub next year.... my feisty bunch will love it! @squirrelbrain @Cinfhen 3y

I really can‘t make my mind up what to read this week. I have so many amazing books on my #bookspinbingo card for October so I can‘t start any of those yet...🤣

The French Promise seems fluffy enough for my poor tired brain!

Forgot to include Saint X on my #bookreport yesterday. Loving it so far but it‘s slow-going, only because I used to #audiowalk every day and haven‘t yet figured out how to fit that into my new working day.

Cinfhen I know!!!! Those last days of the month are tough because of #BookSpin but @TheAromaofBooks doesn‘t care if you start reading early!!!! She‘s SUPER chill........ 4y

Starting this week off with a clean slate!

I just started "Dreamland" and "A Song Below Water" today. Might pick up "Home Before Dark" tonight. It does take me longer to get through multiple books, but I enjoy having a variety and reading a chapter of each every night.

@Cinfhen

Cinfhen I try to never have more than audio, print, ebook too!!! Otherwise I can‘t focus on ANY of them 🤪 4y
SLibrarian5 @Cinfhen I used to just read one book at a time, so I'm still getting used to juggling multiple titles. 😅 It's nice to have my ebook or audiobook on my phone, so I can read something during my breaks. 4y

My tentative #weeklyforecast isn‘t too ambitious: reach page 560 in Twenty Years After, finish my two in progress books, and maybe start Who is Vera Kelly. I should also probably do a quick skim of my book club‘s read because it‘s been over a month since I read it and book club is scheduled to meet next week, assuming they don‘t close the office.

Cinfhen Hope you‘re feeling better today 4y

DGRachel I have four that have already been published, ten total on NetGalley, plus one physical ARC that I won in a giveaway I don‘t remember entering, and one from LibraryThing that should arrive any day now. Good luck with your list @Cinfhen. 4y
Cinfhen Thanks😘I‘m sooooooo not motivated to pick up ANY of my ARCs 😬 4y
DGRachel @Cinfhen I understand that. I no longer have interest in reading probably half of mine. 🤦🏻‍♀️ But, I just keep reminding myself of my 2020 plan and how nice it would be to have a clean slate. 4y
