Belated review…

Honestly, I didn't enjoy this. I didn't find it engaging, for all its action. The characters held promise, but weren't developed at all. I was initially excited about a strong female protagonist in Cora, but her characterization & role flattened as the book went on. Cooper sacrifices character development for horrific action sequences and scenic descriptions that fell flat. There were problematic racial stereotypes galore, but⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) … I was bracing myself for far worse. There was a lot of “noble savage“ to the descriptions of the “good” Native characters, then basically all the Native characters/tribes allied with the French were portrayed as bad/scheming/backward, while their French allies were largely let off the hook. It was so interesting to see the book‘s combo of “of-the-time” stereotypes with some more nuanced depictions of Native characters & culture than ⤵️ 2w
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …I'd have expected. I was pleasantly surprised by the respect shown for the traditions described near the end of the book. But I hated the ending!

Ultimately, I'm torn about this book's value as a classic. It deserves some credit for how it has shaped other writing, and it has some value as a biased but illuminating portrayal of a specific time and place. But on balance, I don't think I'd recommend it. ⤵️
2w
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) One more off the TBR, read for the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead, and an adventure novel for Q2 of the #ClassicsChallenge. @Lunakay 2w

AmyG I read this after the movie came out. What a slow, tedious read. 2w
Lunakay Well done! 2w
BarbaraJean @AmyG SO tedious! @Lunakay Thank you! 2w
nanuska_153 I bought this book a couple of years ago and it's sitting on my shelf cause I couldn't find the will to read it. Seeing your review I am happy that I haven't attempted it 😅 2w
BarbaraJean @nanuska_153 Hahaha—you‘re welcome?! I mean, your mileage may vary, but it was definitely a slog for me! 2w

I throughly enjoyed reading this collection of Dickinson poems. I liked how she made ordinary things sound extraordinary. Highly recommend even if you are not a lover of poetry.
I finished this in March and forgot to post my review. My bad for running behind.

Happy Valentine's Day, dear Littens!

Since the Q1 theme is poetry, what better day to enjoy some sonnets or love poems! ❤️

How are the classics going for #classicschallenge 2025?

💖💖💖

Dilara Good idea!

I read the first (7th c.) written version of Majnun Leyla earlier this year. I still have two later versions (medieval + renaissance) in my To Read pile.
Right now, I am reading a Kazakh contemporary poetry anthology. I don't know if the poems count as “classics“. They might be too recent for that as they were all written in the 20th c. but some of the authors have been deemed “postal stamp worthy“.

AvidReader25 I am in the middle of Swann‘s Way (my 1st Proust!) and finished The Pursuit of Love and Dickens‘ Hard Times. So far, so good! (edited) 3mo

#classicschallenge 2025 @Lunakay #poetry #2025reads

I like text that presents language in unexpected ways. I didn‘t warm to this as much as I wanted to but there were parts that stood out. I could see how daring this was in its own time.

Lunakay Sounds good!🤓🩷 3mo

#2025reads #poetry #classicschallenge 2025 @Lunakay

A 1912 translation of Chinese poems in the public domain. The poems in this collection are plain and what runs through most of them is stillness or nature. This occurs through a variety of themes, including resignation, loss, love or appreciation. I found some poems to be a poignant read, whilst others charmed or humoured me.

#classicschallenge 2025 @Lunakay #2025reads #narrativepoetry

Reading this for the second time, was as hard as the first. Through Hecuba‘s agony, Euripides shows the senselessness of war. Her voice is also the voice of the surviving women, and its truly awful, but I‘m still glad I read this. What stands out for me is the women‘s strength. They have been through so much and yet they are not broken.

#classicschallenge 2025 @Lunakay #2025reads #poetry

18 pieces of prose poetry of varying length scattered with wonderful imagery.

I read “A Hunger Artist: Four Stories“ by Franz Kafka last year, it was beautiful though not a happy read but since then I've become more interested in Kafka‘s work.

Lunakay Great choice!✒️📜🤗 4mo

#classicschallenge 2025 @Lunakay #JaneAustenThenAndNow @Crinoline_Laphroaig #VirginiaBloomsberries @AllDebooks #2025reads

Current read and one of the 62 books I've lined up in 2025. I read a mix of fiction & nonfiction, classic & contemporary. This year my main focus is Jane Austen, Bloomsbury Group, reading poetry, continuing with mythology, and trying to read a bit more science. I'm not very good at stickling to my plan, but I try.

AllDebooks Nice goals. I have The Mirror and the Palette to get to, as well. 5mo
Lunakay Great plan! Switching plans is part of the fun! 😁 5mo

Help a Litten out! I'm wanting to get back into reading challenges this year but I'm having a hard time figuring out what Litsy is hosting these days. It looks like a few I used to do aren't active anymore. Are there any I should know about? (I'm planning to do #bookspin with @TheAromaofBooks and #agathachristieclubR3 with @Librarybelle, of course!)

Picture of my dog's dumb teeth for tax!

TheAromaofBooks I'm participating in - #Pantone2025 and #FourFoursin25 with @lauredhel
- #WickedWords with @AsYouWish
- #Roll100 and #GottaCatchEmAll with @PuddleJumper
- #FictionalTraveler and #ReadorDonate with @julieclair
and my own other challenges, #ISpyBingo and #BookChain

Have you checked @LitsyEvents ? That account does a great job reposting all kinds of shenanigans!!
5mo
Ruthiella You can follow @LitsyEvents for reposts of all the challenges, etc. Good luck! 😃 5mo
AmyG There is #authoramonth @soubhiville where one reads 1+ books from that specific author for the month. #TBRTarot is where a card is chosen and you pick a corresponding book. #readyourkindle is like Bookspin but just for ereaders. Last two are with @Cbee (edited) 5mo
