What a nice game of cat and mouse. Even though the alibi of the murderer was watertight it was clear from the beginning that he/she must have planned the murder. Poirot struggled hard to find out how it was done. A story full of confusion.

First #scarathlon #screamathon book done! Also read for #bookspinbingo and #LittenListen, so 85 pts for #teamslaughter @Clwojick

This one was very promising to start but kind of fell flat and felt formulaic as it progressed. Poirot's reactions and methods are feeling a little predictable lately.

Clwojick 🧡First one down! Way to go! 3y

I thought this was only okay. Poirot is always one step behind, for a change, and I actually felt sorry for him. The anti-semitic stereotypes were jarring.

Finished this audio book — loved it! Classic Christie! Aldo watched some film versions for fun: 1985 movie w/Peter Ustinov. 1934 movie starting Austin Trevor. And an episode of Poirot w/David Suchet. :)

Read on the heels of Peril at End House, this felt very similar and dragged a bit. I feel Christie took a bit of a cop-out with character development by leaning a little too heavily on the stereotypes of actors, which is unfortunate because Peril at End House had much more believable characters. Overall, not a high point in my quest to read all of Christie's works.

At a restaurant one night, Jane Wilkinson aka Lady Edgware speaks out Poirot. She wants him to talk to her husband about agreeing to give her a divorce. Poirot reluctantly agrees and meets the Lord only to be told that the Lord has already agreed to this. The next day, Lord Edgware is found dead.

I remembered seeing the dramatization of this on TV and know how the murder was, but it was nice to follow all the clues.

This one was interesting and I did not guess the solution at all. One of the Hercule Poirot mysteries narrated by Hastings and apparently taking place in the later years of their association. I enjoyed it, despite Hastings vaccilating between hero worship and second guessing.🙄 Read as part of the #readchristie2021 challenge hosted by OfficialAgathaChristie on IG ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is one of my favourite Poirot books. Love the mistery, love the murderer and it's even quite fun to see Poirot follow the wrong lead for part of the story.

4. Actors once again play a crucial role in this novel, perhaps the most significant role in the crime we've seen so far. How do societal views of actors and acting factor into Christie's choice to include them? Has that view changed at all from her time to ours?

#agathachristieclubR2

janeycanuck Well, I think acting was (and still is, to some extent) seen as a rather self-indulgent profession for the overly dramatic - which, you would need to be a pretty overly dramatic & self-indulgent person to murder of your husband so you can marry your Catholic boyfriend. I think it's an easy-out in terms of character development. By choosing an actress and drawing on the stereotypes, Christie doesn't have to put the time into character development 4y
AnneCecilie Wouldn‘t the time of the writing of this be in the beginning of the Hollywood stars, so that they would be something new and exotic? People surrounded by mystic? @janeycanuck 4y

3. Christie frequently uses visual representations of letters and notes in her books, which often are significant clues. If you read in a different format (audiobook, ebook), do you find that your ability to solve the case is hampered? If you read in print, have you noticed these clues in the moment?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I feel like having the actual facsimile of the letter is very critical in this one!! I only ever read print editions, so I can't imagine how it would work with audio. 4y
janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks I read this as an ebook and they reproduced the letter in it. It worked out about the same as print would, I would assume. I don't love this kind of thing, though, unless it's a regular occurrence throughout the book. I'd rather just have a description. But that's just me. 4y
AnneCecilie I read this in print and love books with letter and newspaper pages in them. But I don‘t think much about them other than in this one they seemed to be crucial. @TheAromaofBooks @janeycanuck 4y

2. Jane Wilkinson has some strong similarities to a past murderer: Nick Buckley of Peril at End House. How do they compare in your mind? Which one is more reprehensible?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I'd never read these two back-to-back so I'd never paid very close attention to their similarities before. It seems odd that she would write these stories in a row?? I lean towards Nick being the worse of the two, and I think also the more believable of the pair as well. 4y
janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks I wonder if there was something in real life that inspired these - maybe there was a real life event that sparked both ideas and she had to write them both quickly? Nick is definitely the more believable but I don't know if I can put a tag of worse on one of them. K 4y
AnneCecilie I haven‘t read The Peril at the End House. I have a feeling that that‘s the book I‘ve been waiting for forever at the library. @TheAromaofBooks I maybe you‘re on to something @janeycanuck Christie seemed to be inspired by real life regarding other things in her books. 4y

I've been having internet issues for a couple of weeks so I've been trying to avoid using too much data, but it's not getting fixed until later this week and I don't want to get too far behind on #agathachristieclubR2 questions! This should be the last catch up month, with February questions posting shortly.

As always, please tag previous comments!

1. Did you enjoy this book? Why or why not?

TheAromaofBooks This is one of those middle-ground Christies for me. It's okay, but not one of my favorites, and I don't even exactly have a reason why haha 4y
janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks Agreed - it wasn't really a standout for me. It seemed to drag more than most of the others we've read so far. 4y
AnneCecilie I liked it, but I knew who the murder was from the beginner having watched this on TV. I liked watching for all the clues @TheAromaofBooks @janeycanuck 4y

I really liked this one! I was definitely not in the loop to the whole ending thing, but I just listened to a podcast where they said it was totally obvious and kind of skewered this one. Did y‘all agree??

Also, did Poirot always harangue Hastings for his hair‘s part? Because I don‘t remember this, but he mentions it a lot in this one and Hastings says it‘s a thing he‘s always done.

#agathachristieclubr2

LiteraryinPA No, I‘m with you. The ending wasn‘t obvious to me! You‘re right that Poirot made fun of Hastings a lot in this one, but that just seems to be their dynamic. They appreciate each other in their way, I think. 4y

I last read this two years ago for a #maidensofmurder readalong on Instagram. Now I want to get back to the chronological order of the #agathachristieclub because I fell off the wagon for a bit! (Hope @Bambolina_81 is doing OK, btw.) I'm happy that I remembered whodunit this time ? Hastings was praised by Poirot for being bang average, lol & Poirot was as obnoxiously cryptic as ever—"the torn page, of course!", etc. Fun & snarky; a good read.

Another solid mystery made even better by Hugh Fraser‘s excellent narration. I still detest Poirot, but Hastings might be growing on me...like a fungus. 😂 This is not destined to be my favorite Christie, or even top 5, but it wasn‘t terrible and the solution was interesting. This is also #10 for MountTBR, so yay me!

#MusicalNewYear #day2 #YouAndMeButMostlyMe This prompt captures Poirot & Hastings relationship perfectly! The dapper little Belgian is his own biggest fan, conceited to the point that his own author despised him, and blatantly admits to keeping Hastings around just so he can feel superior to his bumbling British personality.

vivastory Yes, this could definitely be the theme song of most crime solving duos, especially Poirot! What are your favorite Poirots? 6y
Lizpixie @vivastory I have a huge soft spot for Death On The Nile(my first Dame Agatha movie!) Hallowe‘en Party, Five Little Pigs & The Hollow. But my top Poirot is Taken At The Flood where he‘s up against one of Dame Agatha‘s most psychotic bad guys in David Hunt. Highly recommend all 5👍 6y
