This is the year I finally complete the Pop Sugar Challenge! Normally I skip prompts I don't like but this year I'm going for it. The Pantone reading challenge and the ABC Reading Challenge are new to me this year, but lots of fun.

Mental illness of psychosis/schizophrenia through the eyes of a teenager. Caden loves two lives; a real world and a mystery one on a ship. The story follows as these two worlds collide into what is real. This is a difficult book to read because it holds no bars. The authors child went through this and helped. One thing that stuck was how Cadens views on the world and his parents changed from start to finish.

To acclimate the reader inside the mind of a schizophrenia patient, Neal Shusterman begins the novel in second person. Using elements of the second person voice, Shusterman lets the reader know that there is something different about Caden and that this story will be an emotional deep dive into his fears and hopefully his abilities to overcome the voices in his head. Beautiful story!

This is a tough book but it‘s wonderful. I just couldn‘t imagine and my heart breaks for every person and family that this story is a non-fiction book.

Wow. This book is an examination of mental illness, drawn from the author‘s own son‘s experience. I‘ve read books that deal with anxiety and depression, but never one that really digs into psychosis/schizophrenia. It was eye-opening and sad and beautifully written. It‘s in the “teen” genre because it‘s about a teenager but this story has a broad audience. Readers of all ages can learn from this book. #petsoflitsy #dogsoflitsy #loki #rescuedogs

Finished this yesterday over coffee. Caden Bosch is torn between figuring out what is real and what is not as he descends into mental illness. The plot of this MG/YA novel is unclear at the beginning but it slowly unravels as Caden talks about his life and his friends and family. This wasn't my type of read per se but it's a good one, and would make a great school read or YA bookclub discussion.

1. My handle I use goil instead of girl due to a New York accent - I used to write Newsies fanfiction & often wrote that word that way.

Considering l'm terrible with challenges, it's not able that l'm taking up both #ReadingWithMrBook and #ReadingEurope2020. And am even considering #Booked2020 (though l failed epically to this year edition).

I was running 20 minutes late this morning and grabbed whatever books were closest to the door to read on my break as I was running out of the house. I ended up with Challenger Deep and Ten Days in a Mad-House...super random choices, but I've also been wanting to read both so I guess it works out. 😂📚

Summary: Caden Bosch has two worlds the real one and the one in his mind. Over the past months he loses his grip on reality and close ones start to notice his odd behaviour. He goes through a lot of paranoia and treatment. As he's clear he gets to go home, but though it could come back he knows to be the bigger person.

Mental illness--such an important topic, and this book captures what it is like to be tormented by inner demons that require hospitalization, therapy and medication to be vanquished. Shusterman compares mental illness to a tempestuous ocean with beasts that require confrontation. It took me three times of starting this book to figure out where he was going, but once I got it, it was worth the ride. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

Shusterman has a writing style I respect. This story involves a #fantasysetting that is part of a conjured place in the psyche of the MC. It becomes his “default setting” (yes, pun). Poignant

Wow. What a book!

I think I‘ve learnt that looser, more open ended intentions perversely help me stay on track better! I think I‘m cracking exercise - I‘m loving what I‘m doing and new routines I‘m in... but my relationships with food not so much!

This book was so good. I really don‘t want to say too much because I feel like it could be spoiled very easily. Very tough subject matter, but excellent writing and insightful perspectives all the way through. I highly recommend this one. #lmpbc

What a great book! Once I got used to the writing style, which alternates between MC Caden‘s real world and his alternate reality caused by his mental illness, I found the book to be utterly fascinating. I think this is a wonderful depiction of what it must be like to live with mental illness.

Sometimes there are moments when we objectively face the never, and it overwhelms us.

What a great book. It was surprised at how it hit home with me and what I learned. I would definitely recommend this book.

The writing style of this book took a little getting used to, but it‘s worth it. The story centers on a teenager suffering from mental illness and is told from his perspective, which includes both real events and events that are constructs of his illness.

Some heavy topics are covered here but the story is also told with humor and empathy.

Hope you guys enjoy it too!

No cozy at home reading this morning. Instead I was up with coffee in a travel mug to embark on the 1.5 hour journey for car maintenance (yeah it‘s a pain, but I‘ll be meeting up with my cousins after!)

So my Saturday morning reading is in the car dealership waiting room.... Making progress on my #LMPBC pick!

I decided this year to not participate in a reading challenge and just read at my own pace without putting pressure on myself to speed read to get to a certain goal. I just want to relax and enjoy my books!

A story of mental illness, this book puts you inside 15yo Caden Bosch‘s head. You experience his psychosis and his times of lucidity. You jump in and out of reality, seeing patterns and reflections between what is real and how that is interpreted in his psychotic state. It‘s such a good book for creating empathy I think - and a wonderful chaotic ride to go on with Caden.
