Malibu Rising
Malibu Rising | Taylor Jenkins Reid
From the Sunday Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & The Six. A lifetime holding it together. One party will set it on fire. Malibu: August, 1983. It's the day of Nina Riva's annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over-especially as the offspring of the legendary singer, Mick Riva. The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud-because it is long past time to confess something to the brother from whom he's been inseparable since birth. Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can't stop thinking about promised she'll be there. And Kit has a couple secrets of her own-including a guest she invited without consulting anyone. By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family's generations will all come bubbling to the surface. Malibu Burning is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them . . . and what they will leave behind.

I liked Riva's siblings, and how different they were. There were so many main characters, and filler chapters about totally unimportant secondary characters. I think I would have enjoyed this more with less characters.

This felt quite depressing, and I thought this would be about some glamorous party.

The ending felt a bit anticlimactic: I thought all the time there would be something HUGE happening and was disappointed.

Gah, I liked this one. More than I expected. It did a good job of weaving in the parents lives into this event-packed 24 hours of their kids lives. Read the blurb - it‘s a great description and know that the book lives up to it.

Read this for book club. The first half was pretty slow and boring. Once the party started, things got more interesting but there was still a lot of filler that just didn't seem to matter to the plot. It all was just kind of flat.

I'm so excited for this #auldlangspine list from @peanutnine. It's always a good sign when I've read and enjoyed a number of books on the list (A Marvelous Light, Something Wild and Wonderful, Redshirts, The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, and A Lady for a Duke). I've decided to focus on these four in January:

Malibu Rising
A Rival Most Vial
The Reanimator's Heart
The Princess and the Grilled Cheese

Thanks for organizing @monalyisha

peanutnine Ah yay!! Your list was also filled with some favorites of mine! I think we'll be a great match. I'll post my choices soon 😄 4mo

Couldn‘t have been in a more different setting to Malibu as I read this during a week glamping in wales 🤣 as always with TJR, I absolutely loved it. I love her character development, and really interesting to see the return (or genesis) of some characters from Carrie Soto is back (yes I am cross that I have read these out of publication order 🙈)

I‘m on holiday in Perros -Guirec in France, known as the Rose Coast because of the gorgeous pink granite that rises from the sea. I deliberated over the perfect holiday read and I think I found it with this one. Set 40 years ago this week, full of surfing, sun and intrigue. Im really enjoying it.

Taylor Jenkins Reid has mastered the art of the page turner. Every time I read her books I consume them in one day. This was such a fun drama filled read that always kept me interested. I loved that we get to see into the lives of randos at the party it was just so fun to read. Also apparently they don‘t sell condoms in Malibu bc everyone was pregnant

This one fares better on a #reread, imo. I did love it the first time, but since I wasn't braced for an Evelyn Hugo/Daisy Jones-esque twist anymore, I appreciated the character work on the Rivas in a new way. Propulsive and human on all levels. #historicalfiction

The Riva party hosted by the four famous siblings, is the Malibu party of the year. This year the siblings are in for surprise and drama as secrets are revealed. The back drop is the hills and beaches of Malibu. The family is famous, but they are challenged by the same relationship problems as the rest of the world. This was a heady mix of beach and drama rolled into a sizzling summer read pick. 4⭐️out of 5.

A quick, playful read that unveils the threads of family composition. Mickey, the father who is too successful and broken to be a steady husband and dad, leaves his family to grapple life on their own. A devoted mom who self medicated to get through impacts her oldest Nina in a way that makes her have to grow up too quickly. She is the heart and soul of the family, but every sibling plays a powerful part in love. Great read overall!

I have a habit as writing off books as not being my jam and then I end up loving them, and that is exactly where Malibu Rising slid in. TJR won me over with this familial tale of siblings and their parents courtships and one wild party.

TJR is becoming a must-read for me. Is there anything this lady can not write?!
I love the way all her stories tie in without you having to read them all or read them in a certain order. I also don't think there is an author out there who writes more realistic characters.
I adored the siblings in this book, especially Nina and Kit.
It was fun but also heartbreaking at times. Anyone who comes from a broken home will relate to this.

Not my favorite TJR read, but that may because I‘m not a fan of celebrity…and all that goes along with it. However, It was an integral theme to the book, so it was necessary. I most enjoyed the familial relationships and personal drama away from the privileged lifestyle—although the party scene was quite humorous—loved the surfing down the roof into the pool. I'm reading Malibu Rising because I really enjoyed another book by Taylor Jenkins Reid, but so far not much has happened in this one. It takes place in 1983 and follows the life of the four children of a famous singer, and jumps back and forth between 1983 and them growing up. I think the book is building up to a big party they're going to have in the end, which will end in disaster.

I literally read the book in 2 days. Second by TJR, and I definitely enjoyed it. Interesting yet relatable characters, definite page turner, great plot, wholesome relationships, lots happening at once yet still manages to keep you hooked.
It's a story of losing family, of gaining support, of fame, of scandal, of past, of present, of marriage, of divorce, of infidelity, of love. Above all, of betrayal and yet loving until the very end.
4.5/5🌟

TJR really knows how to make you feel for unlikeable characters. This was a great story about the Riva kids and their complicated family dynamics. I loved how it switched between the timeline of the party and the past to slowly reveal more backstory.

February has felt a little full! Between a family ski vacation, a work conference in Orlando, and regular work fun, I‘ve been fitting in books where I can. I‘m trying to read as many #tobshortlist #tob2023 as possible, to actually participate in the tournament for once, and of course keep up with #aam and other challenges… but sometimes giant fantasy/horror chunksters get in the way 😆 I enjoyed all of these - and they were all so very different!

Larkken I maybe liked Sea of Tranquility the best - I love to see literary spec fix, and this one played with time travel tropes nicely - but Malibu Rising was very satisfying. I liked the come-uppetances in the ending (though maybe that is petty? 😬) 14mo

I didn‘t really like this which is a shame as I loved the other two books I‘ve read by her. It was a bit too cheesy, cliche and lacking in real substance for me. It‘s drama filled but I found it dull plot and character wise. So-so because she definitely knows how to write to keep you reading on. #authoramonth

Just squeezed this one in! My 2nd TJR read (1st was E. Hugo). I love how TJR is able to draw the reader right into the story with very few words; that's not easy to do. I adored the characters (especially Nina) and was completely able to suspend my disbelief in certain areas because of that. I could relate to a lot of the trauma, too, also coming from a broken home with 3 siblings. Will have to read more of her!

I was not a big fan of Daisy and the Six and I skipped this one when it came out. I read Carrie Soto in December and was surprised that she had a small role in this book too. The Riva siblings. Kids of the famous musician Mike Riva. It‘s time for the famous Riva party that the oldest kid, Nina, host every year. As long as you know when and where, your invited.

A book about family and what makes a family. Is it “just” blood or is it the people that are there every day?
