Read Between the Lines | Rachel Lacey
35 posts | 21 read | 25 to read
From award-winning author Rachel Lacey comes a playful romance about a Manhattan bookstore owner and a reclusive author who love to hate--and hate to love--each other. Books are Rosie Taft's life. And ever since she took over her mother's beloved Manhattan bookstore, they've become her home too. The only thing missing is her own real-life romance like the ones she loves to read about, and Rosie has an idea of who she might like to sweep her off her feet. She's struck up a flirty online friendship with lesbian romance author Brie, and what could be more romantic than falling in love with her favorite author? Jane Breslin works hard to keep her professional and personal lives neatly separated. By day, she works for the family property development business. By night, she puts her steamier side on paper under her pen name: Brie. Jane hasn't had much luck with her own love life, but her online connection with a loyal reader makes Jane wonder if she could be the one. When Rosie learns that her bookstore's lease has been terminated by Jane's family's business, romance moves to the back burner. Even though they're at odds, there's no denying the sparks that fly every time they're together. When their online identities are revealed, will Jane be able to write her way to a happy ending, or is Rosie's heart a closed book?

Mehso-so

Got some reading time in at the pool and finally finished my #DoubleSpin from January. Unfortunately this book was mehhsville 🫤 I didn‘t care about the bland characters. It was trying to be a retelling of You‘ve Got Mail but it did not land.

Also one line really irritated me. Maybe I‘m being too sensitive but “I‘m curious how a woman raised by a single mom became such a hopeless romantic” is such a shitty thing to say to someone. 🙃 #JoysofJune

Grrlbrarian You‘re not being too sensitive. That WAS shitty!!! Lots of judgment there 🙄 9mo

Sometimes when I read a book it will remind me of a song. I am about halfway through the tagged book and I keep thinking about Rosie by Jordan Allen and it reminded me I never shared my #BookMusicPairing for The Flatshare. 🤓 🎼

Today was a day of reluctant adulting. The time spent waiting for my oil change, I was able to get 20% into my January #BookSpin. My hold for The People We Hate at the Wedding came in the other day and I made a decent dent in that one yesterday. It‘s just ok so far but I am here for messy family dynamics 😝 #JumpStart2023 #JoyousJanuary

Cute! Think of it as a modern, queer retelling of "You've Got Mail", with Rosie who owns a cute little bookstore that once belonged to her mother, and Jane, the woman who works for the property management company that's just delivered her eviction notice. What neither of them realise is that Jane also happens to be Rosie's favorite romance author (written under a pseudonym), and they've been chatting online for months ❤️

I‘m always a little hesitant to check out romance novels, because that‘s never really been my genre. This book, however, was a delight. While it hit a lot of the common romance tropes, it didn‘t rely on them to the point of losing originality. Also, I‘m always down for a queer retelling of a Meg Ryan movie.

Characters were likable and mature, there wasn't unnecessary drama in this book and I liked that.

This was really cozy to read but secondary characters felt a bit same. I loved how this had so many book lovers and I think the setting was maybe the thing I liked most.

This dragged a bit at some point but only slightly. I really liked how this ended and this was really sweet and entertaining.

I'm so sorry for the delay with this - I got really sick and had a fever, and I couldn't do much at all because everything hurt. Luckily, it wasn't Covid. Anyway, here's our last talk for “Read Between the Lines“ by Rachel Lacey. Tell us everything on your mind regarding this book

PageShifter This was a sweet story! The only thing I wondered was why there were so many details about clothes they were wearing but not about the dog?? It was little and brown but that's all we got to know about him! This dragged a bit at some point but overall entertaining. Drama at the end was a bit stupid bit I liked how things ended. 2y
PuddleJumper It was a sweet story. Not my kind of thing but still an okay read. I would have enjoyed it more if there was some actual tension that wasn't resolved quickly. 2y
AbigailJaneBlog It was a fun read, but definitely not a favourite. It's a shame because I think the story could have been really good, but it just dragged for me and didn't give enough attention to the things I felt should have had attention. 2y
BookmarkTavern I enjoyed it! It was very sweet and low stakes, which I appreciated. Romance is not something I usually pick up on my own, so I‘m glad to have taken this time to nudge out of my comfort zone! 2y
BookwormAHN @PageShifter I also wish there were more details about the dog. But overall I enjoyed it, definitely not my usual genre. 2y

I don't normally enjoy contemporary romance but this lesbian enemies to lovers book was a lot of fun. Rosie owns a bookstore & Jane's family runs the property development company that has recently condemned the building.

It‘s not quite a meet cute for bookstore owner Rosie and secret romance novelist Jane when Jane‘s company is responsible for evicting Rosie‘s store to build a high rise. Can they move past that when sparks fly?

This was charming. A sweet wlw romance with a fun cast of side characters. Although very slow. And very low stakes. Not a whole lot happens, but that‘s okay. The drama all made sense and didn‘t feel contrived. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

This is a very light romance book with low stakes and a cute if improbable set up.

I found it so boring and uninspiring. Also, when a character is described as having a 'British accent' I like to imagine a thick Geordie accent and that makes everything better

Hello! I'm sorry for the delay, but here's the first check-in for our #LGBTBookClub July pick, which was Read Between the Lines by Rachel Lacey. We had to read until chapter 13.
Here are the questions, but feel free to talk about anything else that caught your eye during your reading (tag your spoilers!!!)
Again, I am so sorry for being late, life got the best of me :)

@LitsyEvents

AbigailJaneBlog 1. I think Lia is my favourite. She is a nice mix between practical and emotional, whereas I find the 2 main characters are too much either way. 2y
AbigailJaneBlog 2. I think the pacing of the story is okay, but I think the writing itself could be a lot tighter. There are sections and conversations that drag on just TOO LONG or are overly wordy. 2y
See All 18 Comments
AbigailJaneBlog 3. Okay I have read the end, but by the end of chapter 13 I was thinking that the whole lease thing would be a massive issue and cause loads of miscommunication and lead to them re-meeting later down the line once Rosie had found a new place. 2y
PageShifter 1. Well I actually like both main characters but to be honest I feel like all secondary characters feel a bit same. I mean there isn't that many differences in them // they aren't really fleshed out so it's hard to say if I like one of them more than another.

2. At least the last couple chapters has been a bit slowish and the story hasn't went forward really much. I am hoping more to happen soon.
2y
PageShifter 3. I have actually finished the book but after chapter 13 I wasn't waiting for surprises and thought Jane would start working as a full-time author and Rose would find some solution for her store 2y
Nutmegnc @AbigailJaneBlog 2. I‘m with AJB on this. I think the story could have been just as effective without certain sections/convos. Some parts just didn‘t seem to advance the story or characters. 2y
Nutmegnc 1. I liked the two main characters but my fav was the dog 😬. Frankly, it‘s the same in real life, too. 2y
Nutmegnc 3. I have also finished the book so I won‘t comment on that…yet. 2y
AbigailJaneBlog @Nutmegnc the dog is also ideal, 10/10. 2y
BookwormAHN I also like the dog best. I also think it's progressing a little slow. I resisted the urge to finish it so far but I'm hoping for something that is not to predictable or depressing. I really like the book so far 💜 2y
PuddleJumper 01) Brinkley the dog because he has the most personality. I'm finding a lot of the characters too nice and very similar

02) The pacing is okay, a bit slow for my tastes and there is a lot of unnecessary dialogue

03) They live happily ever after with no conflict because conflict doesn't seem to exist in this book
2y
BkClubCare I am still waiting for the book - YAY the library has it AND yea? Some one else is reading it 🤪 2y
PageShifter @Nutmegnc I also love dogs in stories but we never got information about it! It was brown and I assume small because it was also carried but else??! Felt so strange and lazy thing from the author 2y
Nutmegnc @PageShifter I mean…all these things are true 😬. Still prefer the dog 😜. 2y
PageShifter @Nutmegnc Hahaha, I can still get it 💞🐕 2y
BookmarkTavern All caught up! And I like Lia and Amy both. These side characters who love and support their/sister. I love that character type. Amy‘s support of Jane‘s writing and Lia‘s encouragement of Rosie are both so fun to read! It does feel slow to me, but romance isn‘t my usual genre, so that might be a genre thing? I hope this ends happily, but mainly I want to see Jane stand up for herself to her family. (edited) 2y
PageShifter @ozma.of.oz I don't think it's just genre, this just is a bit slow book 2y

Okay so I stated off hating this but pushed through for the sake of #LGBTbookclub and now I'm loving it? The story is great I just wish there had been some editting because boy does this book need it. Hopefully this will turn out to be a soft pick, but that will heavily depend on the ending.

@thereadingpal

Nutmegnc Yeah, I liked it but I felt it would have been better if it were shorter and tighter. 2y
AbigailJaneBlog @Nutmegnc agreed. There were just so many places where she was overly wordy it really pulled me out of it. Plus my pet hate is describing people as having "British accents" because that just isn't a thing! ?? 2y

Rosie owns a bookstore and has been flirting with her favorite lesbian romance author online, Brie. But they‘ve never met. Enter Jane, lesbian romance author by night, hating her job at her family‘s property development company by day. Jane and Rosie immediately feel a connection between them, it‘s too bad Jane‘s family‘s company just terminated Rosie‘s lease. very quick and easy read, it was sweet and I loved every second.

This romance between two star crossed lesbian bookish lovers is a fun palette cleanser. Rosie, a book store owner& Brie, a closet writer of lesbian romance novels, meet, immediately feel a gut attraction, but face one big obstacle to their dreams of being together. I really enjoyed this modern take on You‘ve Got Mail. The author did a good job adapting it to modern times and I also enjoyed the extra layer of adding authorship to the mix.
Rosie owns a book store and Jane‘s family owns the building the book store is in and Jane must evict her. They are super hot for each other, but can they have a relationship with that kind of background? 3.5/5 stars. Slow in some places, but a fun read.

A fun and easy read - a romance between a bookstore owner and a woman who is an author. Two book loving women who find love unexpectedly. All the characters were so likeable! I have been reading some really heavy and/or emotional books so this was exactly the way to "cleanse the palate" and give my heartstrings some relief.

Brooke_H I got this one last month as Amazon‘s free kindle book, but haven‘t read it yet. I‘m glad it‘s a good one! 2y
