Something to Talk About
Something to Talk About | Meryl Wilsner
A showrunner and her assistant give the world something to talk about when they accidentally fuel a ridiculous rumor in this debut romance. Hollywood powerhouse Jo is photographed making her assistant Emma laugh on the red carpet, and just like that, the tabloids declare them a couple. The so-called scandal couldn't come at a worse timethreatening Emma's promotion and Jo's new movie. As the gossip spreads, it starts to affect all areas of their lives. Paparazzi are following them outside the office, coworkers are treating them differently, and a source is feeding information to the media. But their only comment is no comment. With the launch of Jos film project fast approaching, the two women begin to spend even more time together, getting along famously. Emma seems to have a sixth sense for knowing what Jo needs. And Jo, known for being aloof and outwardly cold, opens up to Emma in a way neither of them expects. They begin to realize the rumor might not be so off base after allbut is acting on the spark between them worth fanning the gossip flames?

This was decent. Lots of the lesbian angst that is present in lots of gay relationships, spesh considering the timeline of this book is kinda long! I dno, I enjoyed the writing but some moments were pretty cringe to me. Good single steamy bit tho, if you‘re into that sorta thing in your romance novels!

Jo is a actress/producer/writer for a TV show and Emma is her assistant. They attend the SAG awards and the media say the 2 of them are together. It takes them almost the entire book to even admit they like each other. Emma is awful. She calls Jo "Boss" the majority of the time, so they're not exactly friends, but spends 60+ pages being upset with Jo for not telling her she hangs out with Emma's sister at their nephew's baseball game.

Reggie This was bad. Zero chemistry. I felt like a lot of the book was just getting coffee. 4y
NicoleCeBallos @Reggie so much coffee, zero chemistry, and a lot unnecessary drama. It's been on a lot of lists, so I was excited about it 3y

I can‘t say I disliked this book, but it lacked that particular SPARKLE. The romance burns so slow that it feels more like general fiction with a romantic component, and the characters‘ chemistry never solidified for me. I liked each individual element but wanted them to coalesce into something with more oomph.

I have read all of these and they all have their appeal. All are contemporary romances except for the Malinda Lo, which is YA and historical fiction. More info in the comments. #LMPBC #GroupL

WanderingBookaneer Tagged book was the slowest burn romance I have ever read in my life. I was so desperate for them to acknowledge their feelings for one another and thing after thing gets in their way. Warning: It is set in Hollywood and there is a sleazy director and scenes of sexual harassment. 4y
WanderingBookaneer Childhood sweethearts in a conservative Texan small town reunite after an event in their youth forced them apart: 4y
WanderingBookaneer I don't even know how to summarize this within the character limits! It's 1954 and Lily's family are dealing with federal inquiries amid the Red Scare. While Lily is trying to be the perfect Chinese daughter she is also dealing with the fact that she is a lesbian. A chance encounter with classmate Kat and a visit to the titular Telegraph Club will change both of their lives forever. 4y
See All 11 Comments
WanderingBookaneer This one starts off with one of the worst dates of all time. The protagonists are as opposite as they get but they chose to pretend date to get their families off their backs. Honestly, this one is not the greatest, I gave it a three-star rating on Goodreads, but I have a soft spot for this Pride and Prejudice retelling. 4y
WanderingBookaneer An homage to romantic comedies whose protagonists are a cynical wedding planner and a hopelessly romantic divorce attorney. I don't want to say to much about this one, just in case it's the one you pick. 4y
Soubhiville I haven‘t read any of these. The one that catches my interest most is Last Night at the Telegraph Club, but I‘d be happy with any of them. 😊 4y
WanderingBookaneer @Soubhiville : It is so good! @BookishMarginalia even set aside her cozy mysteries to read it. She enjoyed it as well. 4y
rachelm I‘ve already read some thing to talk about and would rather read some thing new, but the rest look great! 4y

4y
rachelm No distinct preference but I usually prefer adult fic to YA if that‘s an option 4y
Soubhiville Have you chosen yet? I‘m going to make a collage once we‘ve all chosen. Also, you‘ve done LMPBG before right? How have you managed your book before? Each of us with our own pen color? Page markers and a journal? This is my first time. Pointers very much appreciated. 4y

Loved this book 💜 Emma is actor and producer Jo's assistant and friend, but this is disrupted when rumours start that they are dating! I really loved how it dealt with sexual harassment and sexuality, but Emma and Jo's constant avoidance of communication had me groaning throughout. Overall I'd say 4⭐ - really fun to read but a predictable gushy romance

I love the diversity, the feminism, the speaking out against workplace sexual harassment. I love an actual f/f romance and think we need more. But if I‘m completely honest (and I was warned of this ahead of time) this was just way too slow of a slow burn romance for me. Lots of in the heads of the main characters, repeating thoughts and doubts... to finally get to where we want and that‘s it - the end. #bookspinbingo

A wonderful f/f romance, but not swoon worthy. The two main characters and their circumstance are interesting but there‘s no tension between them like I‘d expect in a romance. I had next to no emotional reaction to what was happening unlike the other romance‘s which gave me a ton of emotions.

But I think this book helps to fill a gap in books in general, not just the romance genre. f/f romance/relationships are still hard to come by even in 2020.

I was really anticipating this f/f romance. And it really left me wanting.

There just wasn‘t much here to sink my teeth into. It‘s a S U P E R S L O W burn romance, if you could even call it that. It really started to get tedious as the book went on.

Also, it just didn‘t seem like there was much personality or pizazz to the book or characters. On paper, I‘m sure it has everything but it just didn‘t hold up in the book.

So bummed about this one.

Reggie Me too. And then the nice thing that gets done for a family member that gets used as a point of friction but just made me roll my eyes. There was no heat and for a lot of this book I just felt I kept watching coffee being brought into an office. 4y
swishandflick Agreed 100%! 4y
CaitlinSiem @Reggie That is exactly it! This book could‘ve been a showstopper and it just didn‘t pack any punch. Which really bummed me out. I was like “I WANT TO LOVE YOU PLEASE JUST LET ME LOVE YOU”. I know we need gentle f/f love stories as well, but denial until the last 50 pages doesn‘t make us want to cheer on the couple. It just wants us to finish the book. 4y

This was one of my most anticipated romances of the year and it didn‘t wow me as much as I wanted. It was definitely a slow burn, so part of it may have just been what I was in the mood for. But, I also felt like the characters could fall a little flat and the plot didn‘t have much propulsion to it. It was lots of slow burn dancing around each other.

Nute I like getting insights to audiobooks. I have yet to truly listen to an audiobook, because of the overwhelming desire to select a ‘good‘ one. Also I‘m not sure of the will of my attention span when it comes to listening to a narrated book while I‘m doing other things. I tend to drift in thought. I‘m still wanting to really try the RIGHT audiobook one day!😁 5y
Eline | LovelyAudiobooks.info @Nute Haha, incidentally, I have a blog post about picking your first audiobook! I might or might not be - obiously - very obsessed with audios. I listen to about 200 a year and they are really my constant companion. I'm so happy I can read again so much! I didn't have time for that anymore between work and family and everything, until I tried audible books.

I'm conflicted. On the surface there's a lot to like here - a sweet, well written Hollywood love story featuring a F/F couple. But it had a frustratingly slow pace. Like, sooooo slow. I can't even really use the term "slow burn" because there was hardly any burn to speak of. If more of a PG/PG13 romance appeals to you, this will probably fit the bill. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed.

I hate read the last quarter of this and skimmed the last couple of pages. It gets a so-so because I chuckled a couple of times. There was a massive amount of heat missing from this book. I‘m not even talking about sex scenes. I couldn‘t get invested because I was too pissed off being bored by repetition masquerading as angst instead using time for character development. There‘s also some workplace behaviors that gave me pause. Just mostly a no.

Jo is a Chinese American actor turned show runner who never comments on her love life. Her assistant, a Jewish, bisexual younger woman helps get her through all her stressful days. When a tabloid rumor spreads that they are romantically linked, it stresses them both out, but causes them to wonder if there is something there. If you need something lighter, something happy, something LGBT friendly- I highly recommend this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is my debut author book for #ReadWithMrBook @MrBook. Reads as if written by seasoned writer. The story follows Jo, a Hollywood starlet, who is seen with her assist on the red carpet in what appeats to be an intimate moment. This has the rumor mill going. There is nothing going on between them... or is there? Well written characters and some drama makes for a great beach read. 4⭐ My full review is on my blog at www.thespineview.com.

This delightful, so real queer romance absolutely exceeded my expectations. A Hollywood love story between a showrunner & her assistant done so thoughtfully, addressing boss/employee power dynamics. Slow burn! The characters (Jewish bi woman & Chinese American lesbian) were authentic, flawed, funny and vulnerable. Career and sexual harassment subplots were excellent. Snarky side characters too! I will never hear the term "yes, boss" the same way.

Sadly, I didn't love this debut as much as I wanted to; I thought it wouldn't be an issue but I actually ended up being really squicked out by the supervisor-employee relationship with the two leads. (Totally a personal thing; Wilsner really works hard to address that and make sure that Emma, as the employee, has a lot of agency and doesn't have her work compromised because Jo's feelings toward her.) See my entire review at my blog.
