Logan Ramsay is about to get the brain he always dreamed of. But will he be transformed into something more than humanor something less? The mind-blowing new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Dark Matter and Recursion When the SWAT team gives the all-clear and Logan Ramsay steps into the basement, he has no idea that everything's about to change. Then there's the hiss of aerosol. The explosion. The shrapnel that punctures his hazmat gear. Logan wakes up to find himself in a hospital bed, attended by doctors in their own hazmat suits, his wife and daughter looking on from behind the glass. The doctors say he's been infected by a virus--one designed not to make him sick, but to modify his very genetic structure. In a world where the next-generation gene-editing tool known as Scythe is widely available--and has already reaped disastrous consequences--the possibilities are too many and terrifying to count. Except that after the fever, the pain, the fear...the virus is gone. And according to his government bosses, Logan's got a clean bill of health. But the truth is that with each day that passes, Logan's getting smarter. Seeing things more clearly. He's realizing that he's been upgraded in ways that go beyond even Scythe's capabilities--and that he's been given these abilities for a reason. Because a holy grail of genetic engineering--one that could change our very definitions of humanity--has just been unearthed. And now it's up to him to stop it from falling into the wrong hands. Logans becoming something more. Something better. Even with the whole world hunting for him, he might be able to outthink his opponents and win the war thats coming. But what if its at the cost of being himself?

I had mixed feelings about this one. Overall, it was engaging and interesting, but the pacing felt off sometimes. I also didn't care for the ending exactly (spoiler below). The author also seemed to feel like he had to mention that climate change is killing everyone on basically every page. Okay, I get it already. Sheesh. Still a fun thriller and I can see myself trying Crouch again sometime. Soft pick.

TheAromaofBooks Literally the entire book is telling us about how genetic engineering is sketchy and has unintended results, yet his solution was... genetic engineering?! Releasing a “virus“ out into the world without telling anyone or giving them option?? “it's a good virus that makes everyone a better person!!!“ ... a good option you've known about for like 2 seconds have no idea what the long-term results are?? It just felt SO hypocritical! 2mo
Zuhkeeyah @TheAromaofBooks I had a similar issue with the ending. After decrying all the manipulation mankind is doing…he goes and does he same. It was still a fun read though. 2mo

Crouch always writes high octane science fiction where I don‘t understand all the science but I still get a rush from the race to solve the issues it creates. However, I am beginning to find his stories a bit formulaic as they all seem to follow similar arcs.

I highly recommend visiting the main branch of the Vancouver Public Library. Gorgeous building & the top floor is a rooftop garden!

I also spent some zen time with the jellies at the Vancouver Aquarium, shopped at the Granville Island Broom Co., which made some of the HP brooms, & found this heatable, huggable corgi butt that I *almost* bought at Indigo (where I did buy the tagged) because who doesn‘t need a heatable, huggable corgi butt?!

Not only do his novels take you on imaginative but very feasible utopian journeys, but they will challenge your intellect as well.

Upgrade is a story of humanity in its raw form and an investigation of what actually makes us human. In the end, is it only compassion that our world needs in order to be saved from itself?

This is a fast paced, sci-fi thriller that immerses the reader (through main character, Logan) in a near future where genetic engineering poses a tremendous and immediate threat but also holds great possibilities. I enjoy the way Crouch explores big questions in a fun, personal way. It seems like a book that could easily be turned into a script for some kind of modern superhero-like origin story.

I kind of feel like Blake Crouch just finds the most interesting-sounding nerds he can through his local university and he's like, "ok what's the scariest thing that people in your field think could happen," and then he writes the hell out of it. I find his evil geniuses believable, his stories unimaginable, and his prose delightful. Recursion is still my fav.

I loved this book and thought at the time I read it, it would make a great book club pick. So many issues this books brings up. For example: Is intelligence more important than compassion? If we become too smart, can we lose our humanity? Does might make right? These are just a few of the questions raised in this book.

This book is a somewhat realistic thriller about what might happen in the not-too-distant future when gene-hacking tools are a few levels more advanced. Agent Ramsay works for a federal agency that goes after unauthorized genetic work and is infected with a massive gene upgrade. He has to run to avoid becoming a science experiment and try to stop the potentially catastrophic genetic virus developed by his own family before it's unleashed.

For readers who enjoy plot-driven science fiction novels, Upgrade will be the book for you. There is a mix of gene science and ever evolving problems caused by it. Instead of dwelling too long on the repercussions against relationships and personal needs. The story steadily moves along, sometimes doing time jumps to accentuate the progress of forced gene evolution.

This is my least favorite Crouch. I listened to it on audio and I don't know if that just made it more corny but it was a struggle. This is a hard science book and when he feels the need to explain a double helix? I found that annoying.
1 thing I love that's consistent with Crouch is his use of very smart, clever and strong cast of women supporting characters.

Light pick - a bit underwhelmed by this one. Crouch (like Andy Weir) has a talent for explaining complex scientific ideas in a way non-science people can understand. Unfortunately, I think this was his least successful book (following Dark Matter, which I thought was brilliant, and Recursion, also very good). The premise of upgrading human genes to create a superhuman was interesting enough but the character motivations were not conveyed as well.

A quick moving sci-fi thriller with a highly scientific plot. Reads like a blockbuster movie with a lot of action & fairly high stakes. Because of scientific detail, there are pieces where the information was well above my understanding, but the scientific basis feels solid. There is a lot of thought-provoking material including climate change, human impact, & the basic foundations of humanity. This kept my attention & was a lot of fun to read.

11/150 This is my first read by Crouch, although Dark Matter is on my TBR shelves. I've read quite a bit of nonfiction about genetic engineering, so I'm aware of how frighteningly possible this story can be. Logan Ramsey, and his sister, are upgraded by their renegade mother, made smarter, stronger and faster. Their mother wants them to give the upgrade to the rest of mankind to save the race.
⬇️⬇️⬇️

RamsFan1963 I enjoyed the fast paced, thriller format, and the author's grasp of the science was solid, it was dense and complex, but Crouch was good at explaining it in clear and understandable terms. 4 💥💥💥💥 1/2 1y

My nerdy heart is very happy. All the genetics talk was fun. I quite enjoyed the mix of science and action throughout this book. Thank you @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks for the book ☺️ #litsylovereads

There were a couple science hangups for me (very minor, but this is my field so I noticed). I will toss them below under a spoiler cover. Please note my second observation refers to the end of the book.

Zuhkeeyah So this “upgrade” up/down regulates a whole host of genes but there doesn‘t seem to be a lot of side effects. Our body needs to turn things off/on just like we occasionally need to restart our computers. He should have had some type of long term side effect occur. 1y
Zuhkeeyah My biggest issue: the disposal of the prepped viruses. You do not just drop vials of potentially live virus into water! You bleach the h$ll out of that stuff. I did yell at Logan at this point. 1y

I love Crouch for his ability to take an idea that we see in our current society (in this case, genetic modification), and pushes it to the darkest boundaries that humans can go. Logan Ramsey is a police officer in the genetics bureau, policing humans from modifying themselves, when an accident leads him to being ‘upgraded‘. Crouch asks an important question: if we can fix humans to recognize what we are doing to the planet… should we?

I‘m conflicted. The last chapter of this book was excellent, especially the letter that the protagonist left for his family. But the rest of the book was just so so.
