A couple who broke up months ago make a pact to pretend to still be together for their annual weeklong vacation with their best friends in this glittering and wise new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry. Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in collegethey go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, nowfor reasons theyre still not discussingthey dont. They broke up six months ago. And still havent told their best friends. Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend groups yearly getaway for the last decade. Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blue week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine, and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most. Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week theyll all have together in this place. They cant stand to break their friends hearts, and so theyll play their parts. Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show. Its a flawless plan (if you look at it from a great distance and through a pair of sunscreen-smeared sunglasses). After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one weekin front of those who know you best?

Enjoyed this one! So much more than your average beach-read, romance novel.

“I think, sometimes, we are simply afraid to need. We‘re afraid that if we ask too much, if we bare our tenderest wounds and show our ugliest sides, we‘ll find out that we aren‘t lovable. That we can only keep the ones we love around us as long as we cost them nothing, create no burden. That, at least I think, is the plight of the people pleaser.”

Audiobook
Rom-Com with a side of sisterhood. I really liked this - and I'm really becoming an Emily Henry fan. It's definitely full of tropes, but there is also some depth. I'd describe it as the book equivalent of a hug. Comfort reading.

Here is another book that is a soft pick for me. I have loved other books by this author but this one not so much. The plot was good though slow. Mainly it was the character development that disappointed me. I read a lot of good reviews on this book and so many loved it. But I recall someone saying the author didn't give them a concrete reason to root for the characters. After reading this book I get that. 3 to 3.5 ⭐️

After canceling my plans due to the cold that will not go away I paused my reading plan and pulled this book of my shelves. I could not have chosen a better consolation prize. I love Emily Henry and spending a few hours tonight reading about a couple pretending to still be together for a vacation away with their old friends, filled with great banter, emotional growth, and the HEA my heart needed was exactly what the doctor ordered.

When this book was chosen for my book club this month, I was not sure I would enjoy it. It‘s not the kind of book I normally read. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up liking everything about it. I quickly became invested in the characters. I loved stepping into their world to watch them work through this time of their lives. I spent the book rooting for them to succeed.

4/5⭐ The author is so good at creating backgrounds and writing emotions that sweep you up in them along with the characters. This book is a moving story not just about romantic love but also found family, friendship, and loving yourself enough to do what makes you happy. #doublespin

The first 300 pages of this book felt boring, meandering, and repetitive. I had a hard time believing the characters were “best friends” because they argued and didn‘t communicate. The last 100 pages were emotionally deep, exciting, and really beautiful. The plot showed up and the characters came to life. Such a mixed bag of a book, in my opinion!

I did not expect to have the feels reading this one 🥲 I loved this !!! This is about Harriet and Wyn who fell in love slowly, as friends and kept their love a secret. They met while hanging out with their friends ,who never knew they had fallen in love. Then life happens and their group of 6 best friends gets their friendship tested on a last trip to one of their favorite vacation spots. Their last Happy Place. Loved it. #cozyromance#fallreading

I‘m giving this a low pick because, although I was irritated by it in many places, I did finish it and there were things I liked about it. It wasn‘t just a romance, it was also about women‘s friendships and finding where you belong and the people you belong with. I‘ve always liked books about women‘s friendships, and Happy Place met that need. #audiowalk

If Wyn and Harriet would just talk to each other instead of make assumptions about the other person‘s feelings, there‘d be no story here. This is one of my least favorite romance novel tropes. #audiowalk

Sometimes I find myself enjoying this book, and other times I‘m just annoyed by Harriet and Wyn. Today I was enjoying it because I laughed when Wyn said to Harriet (who reads mostly cozy mysteries) that, “That just means whoever finds the body has a boring job and wears a sweater vest.” I read a good deal of cozy mysteries too. #audiowalk

Why do romance novels often have characters with ridiculous names? I can live with Wyn, but Parth? I‘m listening to it; at first I thought the narrator was saying “Garth,” then I thought “Hearth.” No — it‘s Parth. A character named Sabrina is nicknamed “Sab” as in “nab.” 🙄 Still not as bad as the characters in Elin Hilderbrand‘s The Matchmaker — Box (at least that‘s a nickname), Dabney, Clendenin and Celerie. #audiowalk

Reggie In It Ends with Us the guys‘ names are Atlas and Ryle. Like can‘t we just settle for Mike and Jake? Lol 5mo

Mostly a tale about a group of college friends who grow apart due to growing up after the college years and the issues that come with it. Takes place in the present day with flashbacks to the college days upon which friendships were built. Growing apart with time is a very relatable theme of life and the story moves well, mainly centered on the characters themselves and not super plot driven. (Continued in the comments)

SnowEcho That said, there were some repeated sentiments of the main characters and it was maybe longer than it should have been. It probably would have served us well to look at the thought lives of the other characters to give them some development. Still an enjoyable read, I might still have liked Book Lovers more than this, but enjoyed this book more than people we meet on vacation. 5mo

Harriet & Wyn were the perfect couple, until they broke up 6 months ago. Their friends think they‘re still together. They have to keep up their relationship in front of them, but will it become real again between them?
This was the biggest disappointment of 2023 so far. I didn‘t enjoy the romance, plot, or story because it was boring. 3/4 of the way I didn‘t really care how it ended, I just wanted it to be over. I‘m just not a 2nd chance girlie.

I‘ve had varying opinions about Emily Henry‘s rom-coms. I loved Beach Read, but subsequent books have all been light picks. The setting and premise had a lot of potential, but the execution on the central plot device (a couple pretends they haven‘t broken up so as not to complicate their friends‘ elopement) increasingly strained credulity as the book developed. The career decision the FMC makes at the end of the book caused me actual anger.

LeeRHarry I‘m with you in that I loved Beach Read and then others were ok - sounds like I should give this one a try - just to see how I feel by the end. 😏 6mo
Kimberlone @LeeRHarry I feel like I‘ve been in the minority in not loving her books after Beach Read, so good to know I‘m not the only one! Maybe the next one will hit with me, though! 6mo

September 9, 2023 Woohoo Hooray Hoorah I finished the book. I was so WANTING and DESPERATE to finish the book... cuz it took me awhile to finish. I would say that the theme of book is: Things take time to get over. Sharing emotions with someone you love; especially if you are afraid of getting hurt. Overall, the ending was good. Cleo is pregnant. Wyn and Harriet get married and Harriet is in her "Happy Place"

I consumed this book in just over a day, I love EH. My chest actually ACHED the whole time for Wyn and Harriet. I don‘t like Harriet‘s career decision in the end, but I understand burnout. I‘d possibly read sequels from the POVs of Cleo/Kimmie and Sabrina/Parth, if there was more than Parth‘s lack of real personality and more to Kimmie than partying (we get glimpses into her and I know there‘s more substance if she‘s with Cleo). Book #50 in 2023

I wanted to love this. I adore Emily Henry, but this lacked her charm. It seemed to take me ages to get through, as I wasn't looking forward to reading it much.
The characters were quite bland, and the love interest was such a bore. I didn't care much for the dual timeline, and I found it completely predictable.
However, EH is a wonderful writer. Her way with words is beautiful.

August 22, 2023 New book! Started today and fall-ing in love with it a little too fast. (Get it?) The thing about Emily Henry is that she does not keep you on your toes. I feel like she gets to the point and keeps the story going without making you guess what will happen next. Right off the bat, she explains how Sabrina & Parth, Cleo and Kimmy, and her and Wyn Connor are all friends. However, Sabrina & Parth surprise Harriet with Wyn, her fiańce.

I went into this knowing that it was going to be a bit annoying with the back and forth. And it was annoying. Why do people hold themselves back? Why live your life in the unsaid?
But really, still a good book. This story could have been told in fewer pages. But it seems that all of her books are a bit long.

“It is humanly impossible for Emily Henry to write a bad book.” - E.W., I couldn‘t agree more! These characters and their struggles felt so relatable to me and so realistically rendered. Henry devotes just as much energy to writing steamy romance as she does to writing really genuine friendships. I loved this.

I‘m normally a big fan of Henry‘s book‘s as they strike that perfect balance between romance/fun summer read with a bit extra, but this one, unfortunately, felt remarkably contrived. Everything felt like it was just trying too hard here with no real depth, and stretching the limits of believability of how people actually relate to each other. Definitely seems like this was the result of Henry now being on an annual summer pub schedule.
