Excellent follow up to The Name of the Wind. Now I‘m stuck with my friend who recommended these, waiting for book 3. Love the journey, fae and Kvothe‘s internal and external battles. Kvothe matured and learned so much through this segment of his story, but I felt letdown with more questions along with the Chronicler toward the end.

I‘m still hoping to finish one more book today, but I‘m okay calling my top read of the year. Obviously, it‘s the tagged book.

I read some great books this year and some mediocre books. But I‘m happy with my 2023 reading.

#2023ReadingBracket

TheSpineView I loved both of the books by Rothfuss. I read that we are supposed to get the 3rd book in the series this summer. However, I have heard this before. So I have to see it to believe it! 1y
DogMomIrene @TheSpineView I stopped looking for updates from Rothfuss. I just figured I‘d hear about book #3 when it was published, but now you‘ve raised my hopes. Only a little, but I would love to reread books #1 and #2 because he‘s ready to publish🤞🏼 1y
Laughterhp @DogMomIrene @TheSpineView I heard that he has a book coming out, but it‘s not the 3rd book. It‘s a story from Bast‘s perspective I believe. I heard it on TikTok, so I don‘t know if it‘s true or not. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y

Finished my #superchunkster! This book is 1000 pages with very small font and I absolutely loved every second of it.

I was glad to see Kvothe leave the university and go on some interesting adventures. I love the way this story unfolds and now I‘m mad I need to wait until the next book is finally published.

Didn‘t realize the #magnificentmay readathon started today! I‘ve been super busy, but hoping to make a dent in the tagged book this week. I‘m currently 300 pages into it!

I‘m also listening to what I think is the last Harry Dresden book but I‘m not sure.

And on my kindle is Station Eternity, which is pretty interesting so far! I sometimes have a hard time getting into sci-fi but this is fun.

Kvothe's tale as told to the chronicler moves at a very leisurely pace and with immense attention to everyday detail. This made what was essentially an action story feel very leisurely, and the worldbuilding was vivid courtesy of the realism of the writing.

It took me about a month to finish The Wise Man‘s Fear, but I enjoyed every minute of it. Honestly, I wasn‘t ready for it to end, so that‘s probably why it took me so long. This series is so, so good. I can‘t believe I waited so long to give it a try.

I fear we will never see book 3 in this series! ?

On a serious note, I think the author suffes from what the tech world calls "feature creep". You keep adding things and improving things which causes the release date to keep moving forward and the software or product just never gets released.

SkeletonKey I fear you are correct 😂 3y
wanderinglynn I still have hope! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 3y

xicanti I recently read a 2015 interview with him where he talked about how he can‘t move forward with his work until he‘s had 30-50 beta readers look at it and he‘s reanalyzed every sentence many dozens of times. I feel like that‘s created a pretty intense loop for him where he doesn‘t manage to actually get much done. 3y

My beautiful TBR pile (with more on my Kindle and a couple more on the way lol). Nonfiction on the left/fiction on the right. I've been in a bit of a reading slump lately, only reading in small snippets here and there. So my current reads are slow going. It was a bit motivating to take out my TBR pile and read their blurbs and first lines, to gaze at their covers and remember why I bought each one. Does anyone else ever get in a reading slump?

Phew! I finished. 994 pages (wipes beads of perspiration from forehead) 😉
On the one hand I loved this book. I loved the world and the magic and the adventures and Rothfuss‘ writing is so easy and smooth to read. But there was a big portion of this book where Kvothe is figuring out a kind of sexual philosophy, seeing gender roles across cultures, and to me that got quite weird and cringey. I‘m hoping that in the 3rd book Deanna sorts that out!

#bookreport @Cinfhen

It‘s all fantasy for me this week! Loved Spinning Silver and now I‘m 300 odd pages into the second Kingkiller book. I‘m loving spending all this time in university with Kvothe - I don‘t ever want to leave, it‘s almost as cool as Hogwarts.

And unusually for me I‘ve been bingeing Netflix. For a good YA romcom, Never Have I Ever is so cute. For something a little deeper, the movie The Half of It is just wonderful.

Centique Best not to read a synopsis of THOI and go in without expectations. The blurbs give too much away IMO. 4y
Rissreads Wow! Almost as cool as Hogwarts.....that‘s a pretty big statement! Isn‘t it fantastic when you are absolutely loving what you are reading? ❤️ 4y
Centique @Rissreads yes!! This university isn‘t as whimsical as Hogwarts but they have a library that has miles of underground rooms and lost books, and a forge where they make magical implements carved with runes - so it‘s pretty cool! 4y

This is the continuation of Kvothe's story, and it was a bit of a disappointment after the first book. It begins with Kvothe at the University, however he has caused too much controversy for the University of late and so decides to spend a term away to let his infamy die down. There was just far too much going on in this book, too many plots to count and everything very strangely paced, and I really felt the book dragged on as a result. 3⭐

Fans have been waiting on Book 3 to be released for about 10 years now, though signs point to the third book being released this year. Kvothe continues to tell his story through Chronicler, but this book's pace is far better than the first. A whole new world of characters are developed & Kvothe's mystery is cemented in my imagination. I want to know what happens next!

These are my #biggestdisappointmentsof2019 . These are books I expected to enjoy but ended up leaving me feeling disappointed for one reason or another. A few do overlap with my least favorites list, but just because these books left me disappointed doesn‘t mean I found them all pan worthy. One I even rated as a pick. I feel like these require some explanation, so I‘ll add that in the comments.

shadowspeak17 I had a lot of fun with the first book and the first part of this one, but then things went downhill fast and I spent most of the remainder of the book either bored or irritated...mostly irritated. 5y
shadowspeak17 I had high hopes for Danielewski‘s foray into children‘s literature and was curious to see how the book‘s three nested stories would be executed. Unfortunately, I thought this nesting hurt rather than helped the narrative(s) and ultimately made it not work well as a children‘s book. 5y
shadowspeak17 The Handmaid‘s Tale is fantastic. I loved that book when I read it and honestly didn‘t expect this one to even come close to topping it, but I also didn‘t expect it to disappoint so much either. The writing felt lackluster to me and the book ended up feeling very YA (which I‘m not a big fan of) and like it just exists to cash in on fans of the show. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I was incredibly disappointed with this one. 5y
See All 9 Comments
shadowspeak17 I loved Chiang‘s first short story collection and was excited for this one, but when I finally read it it left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. It wasn‘t a bad collection by any means, I just expected more after how great the other one was. Perhaps this was a case of me overhyping things for myself. 5y
shadowspeak17 Speaking of overhyping things... so many people loved this. My Litsy feed has been full of 5 star reviews for this book since it came out. It also utilizes some experimental aspects which I was really interested in because I have a soft spot for that sort of thing, so I saw no reason why I wouldn‘t like this book. I think my expectations were just too high. I thought it was fine, but just fine. 5y
shadowspeak17 I went in with high expectations for this given how many people love N.K. Jemisin, but I ended up disappointed. I wasn‘t a fan of how the second person pov was executed, but more than that, I didn‘t like how preachy the story was. I guess I prefer things to be more subtle. 5y
shadowspeak17 We Have Always Lived in the Castle is one of my favorite books and I read The Lottery earlier in the year and enjoyed it too, so I hoped I would like this one. While I did like the haunting parts of the book and how wonderfully creepy they were, the character interactions killed it for me. They got on my last nerve and dragged my opinion of the book down significantly so by the end I couldn‘t say I‘d actually enjoyed the book much. 5y
TheEllieMo Interesting thoughts on Lanny.I had the opposite experience: I went in expecting to hate it but was blown away by it (edited) 5y
TheEllieMo Totally agree with you on The Testaments, though 5y
