Are You Sleeping | Kathleen Barber
The only thing more dangerous than a lie...is the truth. Serial meets Ruth Wares In A Dark, Dark Wood in this inventive and twisty psychological thriller about a mega-hit podcast that reopens a long-closed murder caseand threatens to unravel the carefully constructed life of the victims daughter. Josie Buhrman has spent the last ten years trying to escape her familys reputation and with good reason: her father was murdered, her mother ran away to join a cult, and her twin sister Lanie, once Josies closest friend and confidant, went completely off the rails and stole her high school sweetheart. Josie has finally put down roots in New York, settling into domestic life with her partner Caleb, and thats where she intends to stay. The only problem is that she has lied to Caleb about every detail of her paststarting with her last name. When investigative reporter Poppy Parnell sets off a media firestorm with a mega-hit podcast that reopens the long-closed case of Josies fathers murder, Josies carefully constructed world begins to unravel. Meanwhile, the unexpected death of Josies long-absent mother forces her to return to her Midwestern hometown where she must confront the demons from her pastand the lies on which she has staked her future.

As a true crime podcast enthusiast, I was excited to read this thriller. Unfortunately, besides the podcast element, this book doesn‘t offer anything new to the genre. A woman with a troubled past is forced to return home to her estranged family years after a tragedy tore them apart. Her reunion with her sister forces her to question everything she thought she knew. Sound familiar? A quick, predictable thriller with an unsurprising “twist”. 3⭐️

I was intrigued by this story when I saw it was becoming a show, so I thought I would check it out. Plus it‘s about true crime which is right up my alley.

It was okay, but it seems like the redirection they may be taking the show in might be better? DON‘T judge me 🤦🏼‍♀️ but I highly recommend checking out the trailer 🤭

Josie and Lanie are estranged twins , their mother abandoned them to join a cult not long after the shooting murder of their father. The twins are reunited when a podcast reopens interest in the murder and suspicions that one of the twins may have been the killer. A suspenseful twisty thriller that will have you second guessing both of twins. An especially good read for anyone who also enjoys crime podcasts.

First, this was renamed and got a new cover and is now called Truth Be Told. Second, it is now a show on Apple TV, which I have not seen, so it has a third cover. None of those were good signs to me and I went in hesitantly. The premise is great- a Serial type podcast relooks are a murder where there is a cult, love stolen, murder, and tons of secrets. The problem was it was a chore to get to the good stuff that I didn‘t care when it arrived. Meh

Sneaky, sneaky! I almost double purchased this book because it sounded interesting. I say I almost double bought it because the original title was “Are You Sleeping” which I own. This wasn‘t a pre-release either. They changed the cover AND the title to this! Who does that!?! Very confusing

Finally a thriller I couldn‘t put down. I won‘t be watching this on Apple TV, but as a lover of true crime podcasts I really enjoyed seeing the impact a podcast may have on the families that are often times the unwilling focus (even though fiction, it isn‘t hard to imagine how hard the past is to revisit for them). 5⭐️

I haven't been posting my #popsugar2019 reading challenge books but I did keep notes so I'll start adding them. This is for - a book with a question in the title. It also features a podcast in the story and I think that was on last year's list. I really liked this and it stuck with me, I can remember the story vividly even though I read it months ago.

Entertaining overall, but as a podcast listener I thought they did the host dirty to make her out to be some opportunistic bitch, when most podcast journalist are lovely & genuinely concerned. Also the whole mystery kind of lacked buildup and was just a information dump at the end.

A quick read that fans of true crime podcasts will love. Josie‘s father was murdered when she was a teen and her twin sister‘s testimony convicted their neighbor of the crime. Twelve years later, a podcast reexamines the case and Josie no longer knows who actually killed her father.

It was pretty obvious how the ending would play out, but I still wanted to keep reading and see when Josie would come to the same conclusion.

Booklover77 Currently reading this! Very emotional to me! Definitely a page turner for me! 5y

I really liked the plot of this book, although I do think the author could have done with a bit more editing. This story involves a fictional podcast, and I think the writer does a service here by highlighting the other side of those true-crime podcasts that we love so well (esp. since Serial), i.e., that of the victim‘s family & friends. As we passively absorb the rather tantalizing details of stories about ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ those accused and/or convicted, justly or not, of crimes, we often elide over the feelings of the people who have lost someone or something. It‘s not that we don‘t care, we‘re just don‘t hear their side as much—it‘s very often not the point. This book will please anyone who both loves podcasts like Serial and good mysteries...it‘s all here. 5y
Hestapleton Ooo, I like the way you used this prompt! I also really enjoyed this book and the focus on the victim‘s family when podcasts like Serial exist. It made me think from a different perspective, which I think is important, especially given how popular true crime is becoming. (edited) 5y

A decade old murder revisited; twisted family drama; a true crimes blogger trying propel her career; a twin sister running & hiding from her past (always works out so well); earmarkings of a great thriller & doesn‘t disappoint! At a young age, one of the twins witnesses her dads murder & her testimony convicts her 17 year old neighbor. A ruthless podcaster revisits the murder & questions the evidence & the past violently crashes into the present.

#readathon book 3 finished!
Inspired by the Serial podcast, I think this book is especially gripping in the wake of Making a Murderer and the rising interest in true crime and armchair sleuthing. Not partially scary or suspenseful, but an interesting examination of trauma and the lives behind the podcast subjects. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a book club read and I don't think I would've enjoyed it if not for the format of alternating podcast transcripts and MC narration.
The villainous podcast host seemed over the top fake as did a lot of the conversations between characters & I saw the "twist" from a mile away.
Entertaining but pretty meh for me overall.
I'm still curious about the series being produced by Reese Witherspoon and Octavia Spencer based on this novel.

This novel juxtaposes transcripts & social media regarding a true crime “Serial” type podcast with prose regarding how the podcast is affecting the life of the victim‘s family (one daughter in particular). I guessed who actually committed the crime so it‘s between a so-so & a pick for me (I rounded up to ‘pick‘). This would be a good beach read as it‘s quite readable but forgettable.

Remember a few years ago when everyone was OBSESSED with Serial? I remember hanging out with my friend Mel at a jazz club in Chicago and this dude was trying to convince us to go to this party with him because “Ben Affleck is totally going to be there” but Mel just wanted to know if he thought Adnan did it. He left without us. I never met Ben Affleck. Anyhoooo “Are You Sleeping” is basically a fictionalized Serial, and that‘s good.

I really enjoyed this book! I listened to it on audio and I would suggest the audiobook due to the podcast part of the story. This is about an old murder brought back to the forefront due to a 'serial' type podcast. This is part mystery but also part family story. I loved seeing the podcast through the lens of the victim's family.

Interesting murder mystery. Wasn't super high-paced. The relationship between the sisters threw in an interesting twist, although I felt like I still had a few questions at the end. The premise of this story was weak and I hated the social media tactic. I didn't think it added anything to the story. I'm surprised to hear that it's going to be into a movie or TV series (I can't remember which) because I don't think it's a strong enough story. Too easy to figure out.

As the inspiration for Apple‘s first TV series this book is a little too unbelievable and contains way too many Twitter posts. I want to read a book not social media. It‘s also just a little too contrived. I‘ll be interested to see how they conform this for television. #read2018
