Reconstructing Amelia
Reconstructing Amelia | Kimberly McCreight
Stressed single mother and law partner Kate is in the meeting of her career when she is interrupted by a telephone call to say that her teenaged daughter Amelia has been suspended from her exclusive Brooklyn prep school for cheating on an exam. Torn between her head and her heart, she eventually arrives at St Grace's over an hour late, to be greeted by sirens wailing and ambulance lights blazing. Her daughter has jumped off the roof of the school, apparently in shame of being caught. A grieving Kate can't accept that her daughter would kill herself: it was just the two of them and Amelia would never leave her alone like this. And so begins an investigation which takes her deep into Amelia's private world, into her journals, her email account and into the mind of a troubled young girl. Then Kate receives an anonymous text saying simply: AMELIA DIDN'T JUMP. Is someone playing with her or has she been right all along?

1. Ridiculously implausible.
2. The Simpsons, first ten seasons only. Also The Office, seasons 1-7.
3. Two fried egg whites and two nectarines.
4. Pacific, baby!
5. Grey Inland (probably an emo band)

Lots of twists and turns and a surprise ending. Money, privilege, teenage angst. All around a very good read.

I usually don't pick books like this, but maybe I should, because this book was phenomenal! I love seeing the perspective of both the mother and the daughter and how they kept misunderstanding each other. A thriller mystery with a little bit of drama. The characters were real and relatable. 10/10

I know a lot of others loved this one but I just didn't by the end. I liked how it was set up. I also liked how it went back and forth through the timelines. But the end I just kind of felt let down by the whole story itself.

I am like sooo disappointed with the book. I found the title in a list of books with amazing suspense and thrill kinda stuff but this was outright simple. The writing style is simple and good, the book moves at an average pace, but boy! I was disheartened by the ending. The book was so unfair to the readers. Go for this just for a casual affair. I don't think the characters or the story will stay with me.
Do share your reviews though.
3/5🌟

Jess7 I liked this one a lot when I read it. I do think, however, our opinions of books are shaped by the other books in this genre that we have read before. It‘s definitely not on the level of a Clare Mackintosh, Mary Kubica, or Gillian Flynn thriller, but all of those are not YA. I read it a few years ago I think. I‘m sorry you really didn‘t like it. If I don‘t like the ending of a book it can reduce my rating, but a 3/5 would be a so-so for me. (edited) 1y
Jess7 I‘ve read a ton of books in this genre - I‘d be happy to try to recommend something different for you if you can tell me me the main things you liked and didn‘t like about this book. I‘m sure with the amount of suspense /thrillers I‘ve read I can steer you toward something else 1y
TheIndianBookworm @Jess7 You are absolutely correct, our likes and dislikes in the genre are formed by our previous read books. I personally feel, the books in this genre are more about the ending, because it's what takes away all the focus and the whole book is about that. A major portion of the review goes to that. The writing style and every other thing was nice but the main thing, the ending wasn't delivered properly. 1y
See All 16 Comments
TheIndianBookworm @Jess7 And quite clearly, you've read more than me in this genre, it's all about the ending, it's all about the climax in such books and that wasn't delivered very nicely. Keeping in mind everything else, it could have been a much better book, but then the ending, you know that was a bit disappointing. 1y
TheIndianBookworm @Jess7 Also, please don't be sorry and you recommending books, that is so sweet of you. I'd be very happy to read something that you recommend. And did I make myself clear about my liking and dislikings? Do recommend something. 😋 1y
Jess7 I gather you were ok with the YA slant of the book, but didn‘t find the ending satisfying. Personally, I didnt hate that ending but there are several thrillers where I didnt like the ending so I‘ll bear that in mind. I‘ll list some authors. If you have read anything by them let me know whether you liked it or not. That will help me make a better recommendation. 1y
Jess7 Gillian Flynn, Paula Hawkins, Mary Kubica, Lisa Lutz, Clare Mackintosh, Abigail Haas, Kate Morton, Peter Swanson, Holly Brown, William Landay, Liz Fenton & Lisa, Sandie Jones, Shari Lapena, Ruth Ware, Calia Reid, Kate Morietti, Catherine McKenzie, Caroline Kepnes, Araminta Hall, Alice Feeney, Greer Hendricks, Laura Lipman, AJ Finn, Robyn Harding, Louise Candlish, Riley Sager, BA Paris, Liane Moriarty, Gilly Macmillan, Megan Miranda, Amy Gentry 1y
Jess7 Robert Gailbraith, Agatha Christie... there is more 1y
Jess7 Personally, I like dark and twisty and either character driven or quick-paced/suspenseful thrillers. I‘ve only started categorizing my bookreviews for 2018, but you can find them by searching the hashtag JPBOOKREVIEW and the ones I‘ve done this year will come up. For beautiful writing go with Kate Morton, for an all around good, twisty thriller go with The Good Girl by Mary Kubica, for jaw dropping go with Let Me Lie - Clare Mackintosh 1y
Jess7 Lisa Lutz - The Passenger is great with a satisfying ending 1y
Jess7 I personally loved Amy Gentry‘s debut - Good As Gone. One of my favorites bc it was very suspenseful and a quick read (like the passenger in that way). Other favorites are Liane Moriarty‘s Big Little Lies and The Husband‘s Secret but I did not like What Alice Forgot or Truly Madly Guilty 1y
Jess7 Sharp Objects is hands down on my favorite thrillers for dark and twisty. I also really liked The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins (I read it when it first came out before the hype), but her follow up Into The Water fell flat for me. 1y
Jess7 If you like the YA feel of Kimberly McCreight you could try Abigail Haas‘ first book (tagged here). It‘s twisty, but not completely shocking. I liked the ending. 1y
TheIndianBookworm @Jess7 I have gone through each and every comment of yours thoroughly. Yes, you are right, that I am okay with the YA slant but definitely not okay with the ending. I've read Paula Hawkins, Sadie Jones, Ruth Ware only. I plan to read Gone girl and Sharp Objects super soon. And who hasn't read Agatha Christie? 1y
TheIndianBookworm @Jess7 Even I like dark, twisty and character driven intense and quick paced books. Books that leave you in awe. I have noted down each and every book you have selectively recommended. And will definitely give them a try one by one. 1y
TheIndianBookworm @Jess7 I have to say that we are quite similar in this. Even I read The girl on the train much before the hype and much much before the movie even came out. 1y

Very good book. When I thought I had everything figured out, I would get a curveball. When I started to follow that train of thought, another curveball. Enough deviations were in the story to keep me on my toes, but not to the point I need to carry around a notepad for notes.

In all the craziness of life, we need to take some time to rediscover what makes us happy. We need to self love. Today, I went to barre class with empowering ladies. I got my nails done in a bright color, I drank a cocktail out at lunch. I curled up and read. Set your intention each day. Breath in, breath out. If I asked you to name all the things you love, how long would it take to name yourself?

I had really high hopes for this book based off its summary. However, the delivery fell so flat. It felt like the writer forgot completely about how real teenagers behave, adults bad actions had no consequences, and character's odd actions were never explained or were explained by adding a characteristic that conveniently didn't show up until 200 pages in when it was needed. Very disappointing read.

So that happened. This book did manage to keep my attention, but after all was said and done, it just kind of felt meh. The chapters from Amelia's POV were hard to get through since so many of the teenage characters felt one dimensional. Then we have 3 adults who did some shady stuff and get no real explanation for or conclusion to. Especially Liv and the Gracefully blog. I say this book is worth a skip.

Perfect for reading on an airplane because you don't want to put it down and there is nothing else to do anyway! This book also mildly terrified me as I have a toddler and thinking about her future teenage years with cell phones and social media makes my xennial heart thud. The shifting POV worked for me, as did the incorporation of blog posts and texts. Some predictable plot twists, but some unexpected ones too. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
