Always appreciate how much research rebecca solnit puts into her work. This one had a few catchy points but not my favorite book of hers, still academically good of womens studies.

A short essay collection by the wonderful Rebecca Solnit. These are harsh and real looks at Feminism, violence, privilege, and the culture surrounding conversations had by men and women. She poses questions like why do we keep teaching ways for girls not to get raped, but we do not teach boys not to rape?
They are not always fun, but many thing I think are here on paper which helps to read.

Another really good read from Solnit. I am now embarking on a quest to find most of her other books, few of which are available from my libraries. I like that Solnit explains the advent of the word “mansplaining” but also that she didn‘t create it nor does she generally use it.

GingerAntics I hadn‘t thought of this before, but capitalism is inherently sexist. It really is a man‘s system to benefit men, even though it actually hurts them. 2y

Today‘s library #bookhaul is another Solnit. I hope it‘s another quick read, maybe for this weekend or early next week. Frustratingly, the other book I requested (which was on the shelf at my branch when I requested it!) was checked out and the other copy hadn‘t arrived yet. It should be in tomorrow sometime, but I‘m not near that branch again until Tuesday. 🤨

Pick because I think some of my lack of enthusiasm is because I read these all in one sitting in a bout of insomnia. Some of the essays felt repetitive referencing each other and citing the same studies. However the takeaway- that society doesn‘t talk about violence against women and violence in general as gendered phenomena is important and that not enough attention is put on how to change men‘s behavior and societal expectations of men

An intriguing collection of essays that hits on a variety of vital themes and points. It started out slow for me; however, by the 3rd essay I was enjoying it. I especially liked the section on Virginia Woolf. Rebecca Solnit is a wonderful writer. This is the 1st book I've read by her, and now I plan to read others. I now understand why this book is on my lists as a necessary, feminist read.

I got it because I thought it would be a darkly humorous book about mansplaining. It‘s actually a collection of essays, one about mansplaining, the rest about violence against women, the fight for women‘s rights, and the things that sparked the latest revolution.
There were a couple of essays that were a little high brow for me, overall pretty good, just not what I wanted. Expected something totally different.

The first essay was good but other than that it isn't my cup of tea. If I were in college, perhaps, I would like this, but as an adult with a lot of books I want to read, I don't really have time or interest to read essays about other pieces of art. I'd rather just look at the painting or read the original text myself and formulate my own opinions.

Some pertinent essays on rape culture and the progression of feminism up until 2014. Some dry academic dissertations. My criticisms are that it placated men too much and needed to be more intersectional. I appreciate all women who speak up for feminism. I don't think phrases like "welcome to Manistan" are culturally sensitive.

I don‘t normally read essays, but two in this collection took my breath away and almost had me in tears. I‘m glad I read them and I will keep this book because I worry that we won‘t be allowed to have these kinds of books soon. I was not a fan of the middle essays so much, I skimmed them; so this is a so-so and not a pick. 2/5 stars, read if you want to think about some deep and dark things.

I had expected to like this more than I did, but there is just something about Solnit‘s writing style, that put me off. The topics are arguments are right up my alley, but her essays felt a bit all over the place. An okay read, but I feel like there are other authors who do the same, but better 🤷‍♀️

meghathecloud I have heard some others have a similar experience with this. Every lukewarm review pushes it further down my TBR. (edited) 4y
Kalalalatja @meghathecloud it was the same for me, but I finally talked myself into giving her a chance. I‘m definitely glad I got this from the library, and didn‘t spend money on it #BorrowNotBuy 4y

I wasn't excited about reading this book. It's depressing to me to read about how we're still fighting the same old stuff we fought against in the 90s. But I found something unexpected here: a clear parallel between "Not All Men" and white exceptionalism. Through the familiar lens of feminism, I think I've gained a better understanding of my anti-racism work. Still a little unclear on action items, but it's personal progress.
#bookspinbingo

Prairiegirl_reading I nodded along to a lot of this but I didn‘t think it was particularly groundbreaking, nothing new. 4y
ImperfectCJ @Prairiegirl_reading Agreed. My favorite essay is the one about Virginia Woolf. Well, and the connection between feminism and anti-racism, but that isn't explicit in the essays, just a lightbulb that went off for me. I also like her point about the balance of celebrating progress while still keeping one's eye on all that's left to do. 4y
NeedsMoreBooks I liked this one but I agree that we needed some action points. 4y
ImperfectCJ @NeedsMoreBooks It's almost always easier to identify the problem than it is to figure out a solution, I guess. Although identifying the problem isn't necessarily "easy" either. 4y

This is the perfect example of a narrator that ruins the reading for me. This is serious, necessary reading material, and she sounds like she‘s reading children‘s books. WTActual???🤷🏻‍♀️

Caterina I've met Solnit in person and gone to some talks she's done, and that's just actually how she talks, kind of light and breathy. Somehow seeing her talk helped me get used to it, but I still read her self-narrated books in print rather than listening to the audio. 😅 4y

The title essay is pretty good, and less extreme than people want you to think. The others varied; I wasn't that interested in the one on Virginia Woolf, for instance. Not a *bad* read, per se, but nothing surprising for someone reasonably aware of the world around them.
