DARKDAWN. | JAY. KRISTOFF

Mehso-so

The Nevernight Chronicle and I had a problem.l since the beginning. I liked the conclusion much more than Godsgrave, but I feel I have some rather harsh words to say:
This feels like a YA novel that the author desperately tried to make an adult novel. So he introduced lots and lots of cursing, sex, and gore, without understanding that the storyline stays a YA story with tones and tones of YA tropes.
I liked the books, but this annoys me to no end

uwak I felt this way too. I think it would've helped somewhat if Kristoff had aged up the characters more but I think him also being a primarily YA author was also a significant part. 1mo
Sweetkokoro This is what has worried me about starting this series, I don‘t want an adult fantasy book with YA tropes or bogged down with sex, gore and violence to “seem adult “. I wasn‘t a fan of his YA book Aurora Burning so it‘s made me hesitant to touch any of his other stuff. Also I have seen a few people with similar complaints you have about this series. 1mo

This book is near future sci-fi, Bible retelling, and a hero on a quest in this order. On 900 pages. It is too much. In his better books, Stephenson is lengthy at times, but this felt if he tried to do all of this at once and it just did not work out. The last part could have been good, but I overflew the pages because I just wanted it to end.
Interesting concept, but just too much ideas in one book.

My reading progress this month. I am very unhappy about my reading slump, but I know the reason now:
I have 19 books on my MountTBR challenge, but tons of new ones I really want to dig in - I think I am stretching this one so I don't have to pick an old book over a new, exciting one.
So, I am ditching my #MountTBR challenge. At this stage, all that happens is that the new release become books old ones, repeat.
Back to mood reading!!!

Tex2Flo Mood reading! My favorite! 2mo
Balibee146 I so get this. I've given up all challenges and even most buddy reads as they just triggered a slump for me 👍 2mo
RachelO @Balibee146 Also with you on this! I‘ve been slumpy for at least 5 months of this year, partly because there‘s been a guilt/stress/‘should be‘ element to my reading. It‘s still taking HUGE amounts of willpower to not sign up for all the challenges next year 🙄. 2mo
DuckOfDoom @Balibee146 @RachelO I will do only the Goodreads reading challenge, as every year, but I set a reasonable goal. Also, audio books, graphic novels etc counts for me. I am currently doing a buddyread with @julesG, but it is the most relaxing buddy read ever. Absolutely no stress, but we already got halfway through a really big chunkster! 2mo

Hey Littens, a non-bookish post here
Today, after a long illness of severe depression, I went to work for the first time in 6 months and was told my contract would not be extended in February as I believed.
There are many good things about this, I can draw more, and I have 2 months vacation starting December. But I am really sad, it just sucks right now.
On top of that, I have no concentration left for reading ☹️

Thank you for listening ♥️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa First.....The drawling is beautiful. Second....is it possible they are not renewing your contract because of your health issues? If so, do you have any recourse? 2mo
DuckOfDoom @Riveted_Reader_Melissa it was a contract for a PHD position. Because of the little progress I made in the last 2 years, the professor can't see that there will be progress in the future. There is also the question of funding. I'm not 100% sure if I would have gotten the same treatment with a physical health issue, though 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DuckOfDoom I‘m so sorry, hopefully this will lead you to something better. 2mo

I am horribly behind my #mountTBR challenge, I need to read 22 books of my 2018 TBR. The new ones I have been waiting for are currently waiting on the shelf and judging silently. BUT! I am so happy I finally read this. It was a good fantasy with an interesting premise, not too complicated, the enemy the Wild is old, but on top there is a layer of political scheming. It's very forward, and the story progressed almost a bit too fast.

1. Books and people who like books. Photos do not have too be Instagram quality. Just say what you think
2. Weekly how-are-you-posts and too many photochallenges.
3. - Mute hashtags in the App

4. I try to post a review of every book I read.
5. Yes
6. See 3. I would really like to have different feeds so I can sort all the awesome people I follow!!!

Sace 1. I find myself scrolling past Instagram quality posts. I also tend to ignore posts with a paragraph length block of hashtags. I'm not anti hashtag, but sometimes the list of them is longer than the blurb! 3mo
DuckOfDoom @Sace I have almost never searched for hashtags on Litsy - I look upon my feed of people I follow, and find new people through the comments. Hashtags are ok, but not really needed here😅 3mo
Sace I tend to search the manga hashtag because it's definitely a niche genre here and I don't want to miss any good recommendations! 3mo
See All 13 Comments
Graywacke @DuckOfDoom @Sace i use hashtags for group reads. They‘re really useful there. The thing that I really really don‘t like lately is that I‘m constantly hitting links by accident and find scrolling very difficult. (Has to do with an iPhone iOS update). 3mo
Sace @Graywacke I don't have problems with that kind of hashtag use and I will be the first person to hit up a cat hashtag but sometimes I see posts with more hashtags than content. I should probably confess here that I might not completely understand the theory and use of them 🤣 3mo
ljuliel Thanks for the replies. I agree, the BOOKS seem to have taken a back seat at times. Another thing that sorta bugs me ( not a lot, but ....) is I see truckloads of pictures of books people buy or get at the library, but where are the reviews ? There seem to be some folks who like to show what they buy, but either never read them, or put a review in here. I like the reviews. It‘s where I get ideas for new books to read. 3mo
ljuliel @Graywacke That‘s been mentioned a lot in these questionnaires. I had the same problem. It happened after an Apple update. They‘ve had 2 more since then, which has made the problem much better. It‘s not completely gone, but it‘s better. Check to see if you‘ve added those newest updates. Mine says version 13.2. I hope this helps. 3mo
DuckOfDoom @ljuliel I think book hauls are great if they are followed with reviews! I can often spot a couple of books that spark my interest, and when a review gets posted, I can decide if I want to add it to my TBR. But that is still about the books. If it's more about the pretty picture of books, I loose interest. But I just don't follow those posts, and am pretty happy with the content of the rest 3mo
Graywacke @ljuliel mine is 13.2, and no updates available. 😕 3mo
ljuliel Well, darn. I was hoping that‘d help. @Graywacke 3mo
Sace @DuckOfDoom @ljuliel I don't mind book mail and book haul posts or photo challenges because I don't like to get out and it feels like being at a book store. I've always been drawn more to a cover. One thing that social media has changed for me is wanting to read a book BECAUSE of a review I read. But before social media, I would just wander into a store and wait for a book to call to me. 3mo
ljuliel @Sace. Yes it‘s much easier to shop for books while reading reviews online. Going into a bookstore with no ideas at all is a bit daunting. I like to at least have an idea of what to search for. 3mo
Sace @ljuliel oh I'm the complete opposite. I like to explore and discover. 3mo

This is one of the very few books that would have been better if they were longer. Magic Houses scheming for power in a world were Magic is boosted by the suffering of others? Sounds great! But the intrigue really fell short with the straightforward writing. And I would have preferred to skip one point of view for a plot twist along the book.

I've started this book for over 8 years, the book of shame because I've never finished it. When I started university, I was not able to read much in the first 3 years, and now that I do, I pushed this one back and back.
Guess what, I've finally read it!! It was not bad, a fast paced, cinema inspired first contact story.
But it was also kind of uncreative, so just an ok book for me😅

Wow @Heideschrampf , what an awesome package! You are a talented crafter - I hated to unwrap the gifts, they looked awesome. Esther's spellbook is my so cute 😍 I love everything 😁

Heideschrampf Yay! I'm happy you like it. I really enjoyed crafting the things, though they came out wonkier than i'd have wished 🙈there's also some thrift store finds like the star wars cards, i hope you don't mind. ❤️ 9mo
DuckOfDoom @Heideschrampf Not at all! I like cool thrift store finds. The 'main protagonist' and 'plot device' buttons are really funny 😂 9mo
Heideschrampf May this button ever remind thee thou art the main protagonist of thine own story! 💪🤘 9mo
Heideschrampf Damn! I just now realised i forgot to include the Terry Prattchet CDs 🙈 9mo

The first YA I've enjoyed in quite a while. There are tropes, but the writing style of the author is better than the last ones I've tried. She actually takes time to tell a story and set up a scene.

Well, 50% in and this book has told me that a girl is to blame if men make the attempt to rape her, and that even a tough warrior girl needs to be saved from rape by a tougher, good-looking, noble saviour.
WHAT THE FUCK?!

laurenbescoby I have this sat on my shelf from a Fairyloot box. Burgh. I question them picking this book for a box with that sort of message for the young women purchasing it! 9mo
julesG Gah! Still have this from FairyLoot as well. I had high hopes, given the blurb on the back. 😔 @laurenbescoby 9mo

DuckOfDoom @laurenbescoby @julesG it was only one scene that really threw my off, because it was so bad. But even one case of victim blaming is too much, in my opinion. I am finished now and the whole story was bland and the usual mix of YA tropes :/ 9mo
laurenbescoby @DuckOfDoom that's why I cancelled my fairyloot sub. After 3 books I was bored. So many repeated tropes 😣 9mo
DuckOfDoom @laurenbescoby I like YA books between bigger fantasy titles, but it's been a long time since I read one that does something interesting. Fairyloot seems to have gotten worse with their picks, too 😣 9mo

I was a bit concerned when I read that it's an YA book, BUT after I read it I can say it does not read like your standard YA. It's from Norway, and I hope it will be translated to English soon, because it had a bit of this classical fantasy feeling meets a Norse mythology inspired world. The author really took her time to flesh out the characters and their journey (some might say it drags a little, but I enjoyed the slower pace).

DuckOfDoom @julesG you wanted to know if I liked it 😁 10mo
julesG Thanks!!!! It's still on my list. I think we have a similar taste in books, so knowing you liked it is the tipping point. 😉 10mo
julesG PS: have you seen the original Norwegian cover? The German edition is very tame. 10mo
DuckOfDoom @julesG it's just hidden - when you open the book, the rest of the illustration is right there. But I had the same thought when I saw the original cover on Goodreads 10mo
julesG Ah, makes sense. 10mo
