Prayer for Owen Meany
Prayer for Owen Meany | John Irving
*I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voicenot because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother's death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany. *In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boysbest friendsare playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary. Amazon.com ReviewOwen Meany is a dwarfish boy with a strange voice who accidentally kills his best friend's mom with a baseball and believes--accurately--that he is an instrument of God, to be redeemed by martyrdom. John Irving's novel, which inspired the 1998 Jim Carrey movie Simon Birch, is his most popular book in Britain, and perhaps the oddest Christian mystic novel since Flannery O'Connor's work. Irving fans will find much that is familiar: the New England prep-school-town setting, symbolic amputations of man and beast, the Garp-like unknown father of the narrator (Owen's orphaned best friend), the rough comedy. The scene of doltish the doltish headmaster driving a trashed VW down the school's marble staircase is a marvelous set piece. So are the Christmas pageants Owen stars in. But it's all, as Highlights magazine used to put it, "fun with a purpose." When Owen plays baby Jesus in the pageants, and glimpses a tombstone with his death date while enacting A Christmas Carol, the slapstick doesn't cancel the fact that he was born to be martyred. The book's countless subplots add up to a moral argument, specifically an indictment of American foreign policy--from Vietnam to the Contras. The book's mystic religiosity is steeped in Robertson Davies's Deptford trilogy, and the fatal baseball relates to the fatefully misdirected snowball in the first Deptford novel, Fifth Business. Tiny, symbolic Owen echoes the hero of Irving's teacher Gnter Grass's The Tin Drum--the two characters share the same initials. A rollicking entertainment, Owen Meany is also a meditation on literature, history, and God. --Tim AppeloFrom Publishers WeeklyJoe Barrett captures the humor and sorrow of Irving's classic novel about faith, friendship and fate. We follow the adventures of diminutive Owen Meany and his best friend Johnny Wheelwright as they grapple with life, death and devotion and come of age in the small town of Gravesend, N.H. Barrett deftly portrays a host of strange and wonderful characters as Owen commandeers the local Christmas pageant, battles with an autocratic headmaster and fulfills what he believes to be his destiny. Faced with the unenviable task of capturing the singular voice of the titular character (in the novel, Owen's dialogue is capitalized to represent his strident, squeaking speech), Barrett produces a workmanlike rendition of Owen that, while not perfect, grows on listeners as the story unfolds. True to the spirit of the text, Barrett's masterful rendition is a delight. A Morrow hardcover. (Aug.) Copyright Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

#GratefulReads Day 25 - #Bookyouhavereread

This is my favorite cover for this book, too. Did not like the movie version (Simon Birch) at all. Still makes me angry to think about it. 😠

@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620

Kaila-ann I just picked up this book recently. 2w
OriginalCyn620 👍🏻📚 2w
ImperfectCJ @Kaila-ann Have you read many of Irving's other novels? He used to be my favorite author. Owen Meany wasn't the only novel of his that I re-read, but it was definitely my favorite. I haven't read it in ages, though. 2w

Kaila-ann @ImperfectCJ I don‘t think I have actually. I‘m really behind on my classics, something I plan on working on this coming year. 2w

Scochrane26 I still haven‘t read this book, it‘s on my kindle. But, years ago, as a camp counselor, the summer staff watched the movie, then made fun of it all summer. 2w
ImperfectCJ @Scochrane26 The movie deserves to be made fun of. I don't know how they got away doing that to the novel. 2w

This is an amazing book. It was the top pick in my #MakeMeReadIt lineup, and I‘m so glad I finally read it. I had some reservations about the way it wraps up in the end, but I‘m still thinking about the characters & the ideas two weeks later. The writing is masterful. And it is SO hilarious. I don‘t know how Irving pulls it off, this balance of comedy and tragedy and depth, but it‘s wonderful.

BarbaraJean And I also basically hate all the covers that are out there. The dressmaker‘s dummy is the best of the ones I‘ve seen, but why are so many of these covers such a mismatch for the feel of the story?! Or just boring? I think the “Hey, let‘s slap an armadillo on it” cover is the one I hate the most... (edited) 4mo
TrishB I have the armadillo one 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ it‘s dreadful. 4mo
Freespirit I read this book about 15 years ago and I still remember it clearly...for me that‘s the sign of a great read😍 4mo

Lcsmcat I‘ve had the same thought about the covers. (Mine is the one on the bottom right.) But, try as I might, I can‘t come up with a _good_ cover idea. Someone ought to try! #ArtistsOfLitsy? Anyone out there have an amazing cover idea? 4mo
AmyG I have the armadillo one, too....though it‘s a bit beat up. This is one on my most favorite books ever. ❤️ (edited) 4mo

I‘m woefully behind on reviews—but here‘s my July reading. Lots of fantastic reads! Owen Meany will definitely stay with me the most, but other favorites were: Life on Mars, Ink & Bone, Quiet Girl, and An American Marriage. I only finished two for #MakeMeReadIt, but will continue in August!

Daisey Great stats! I enjoyed Ink & Bone; at some point I should read the rest of the series. 4mo
BarbaraJean @Daisey Thank you! I really liked Ink & Bone, and though I‘ve enjoyed the other two, the first is the best of the lot so far. They all end with enough of a cliffhanger that I‘ve been pulled immediately into the next! 4mo

I‘ve been introverty around here lately—hoping to post more this week! But here‘s my #bookfitnesschallenge Week 5 checkin! I rocked my reading goals with 4 books completed. Fitness goals were scattered due to travel & HOT weather. I walked ALL over the Salem Art Fair on Sunday & ALL over the Portland airport on Monday—counted those as my “neighborhood” walks. I did my gym workout, but only 2/4 walks at work b/c it was TOO HOT. #BFCR2 #BookNerdHerd

BarbaraJean Oh! And my spiritual practice goal was a bit scattered this week as well, but I attended/helped lead a Quiet Day retreat at church today, which was a great time of rest and re-centering, connecting with God through prayer and reflection. 5mo

I‘ve overloaded my July reading (darn library books!!) and am not sure I‘ll be able to finish all my #MakeMeReadIt picks before the month is out, but I did start this vote-winning book on Saturday! I‘m really enjoying it—there‘s something about it that reminds me of Bradbury‘s Dandelion Wine, and that makes it feel like a perfect summer read.

A #BookNDinner that @MrBook would approve of. 🙌 In Idaho, we have to be creative with our potatoes. The sushi restaurant that we frequent made these to cater to the bar crowds, but we couldn't resist. It's tater tots with unagi sauce, scallions, and spicy mayo. We also got more sushi rolls than I felt comfortable sharing. 🤣🍣

erzascarletbookgasm One I‘ve been meaning to read.. 11mo
Kaye @Leftcoastzen @erzascarletbookgasm I hope you both get the chance to try it. It‘s got such memorable characters , goes so deep into many subjects. I‘ve heard a few people say they were put off by the religious talk in the beginning. It‘s not a preachy book, by any stretch. More about people‘s morals and judgements and loyalty. It‘s hard to describe. It‘s easier just to say best book ever. 11mo

Owen Meany runs into some trouble in his schooling life when his rebellious newspaper editorials challenge the authority of the headmaster. But who needs a degree when you're schoolin' life? Amiable @AmyG I cry at the end every. Single. Time. Even though I know what's coming. 1y
AmyG Omg. The first time I read this I bawled at the end. I never had a reaction to a book like I did to this one. 1y
Amiable @AmyG Have you read "A Happy Marriage"? I cried so hard at the end of that one, too. Big, deep, ugly sobbing. It actually made my husband come running into the room. ? (edited) 1y
AmyG I did read that and I DID cry, too. Owen Meany made me a book crier!!! 1y
mcipher I haven‘t read this book in years but I love it and recently bought a copy so I can re-read it. So good! 1y
