Knife of Never Letting Go
Knife of Never Letting Go | Patrick Ness
The riveting Chaos Walking trilogy by two-time Carnegie Medalist Patrick Ness, reissued with compelling new covers and a bonus short story in each book. Todd Hewitt is the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him -- something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too. With hostile men from the town in pursuit, the two stumble upon a strange and eerily silent creature: a girl. Who is she? Why wasn't she killed by the germ like all the females on New World? Propelled by Todd's gritty narration, readers are in for a white-knuckle journey in which a boy on the cusp of manhood must unlearn everything he knows in order to figure out who he truly is."

Good but a bit of a slog in the mid-bits. Story comes together too slowly and could have used some character revision between world building interactions. Suffers from YAL repetition to nail down the point. That said, I‘ll move to read the rest of the trilogy because all the reviews say good gets better.

Hope may be the thing that pulls you forward, may be the thing that keeps you going, but that it's dangerous, that it's painful and risky, that it's making a dare in the world and when has the world ever let us win a dare?

#2022Book125
This was definitely a different take on the “teenagers trying to survive a dystopian hellscape.” The characters were well-developed and behaved the way you would expect from kids that age. My only issue with this book is that the “big reveal” didn‘t happen until almost 400 pages in, and by then I was started to get annoyed with the characters inching toward the reveal and then backing off again.

Todd is born on the New World, settled by his parents and other colonists hoping to find peace and security on a new planet. But men on this planet have been “infected” with a disease of some sort that makes their thoughts, emotions, and dreams public—meaning it‘s endless Noise, causing chaos—part of the title of the trilogy. The settlers form groups that deal with this Noise and chaos in all sorts of different ways, some good some bad. ⬇️

Texreader Todd sets out on a journey (I won‘t say why, because spoilers) with his dog. This book is about his journey, meeting a “quiet” girl (women don‘t have the infection), and their discovering these very diverse communities, facing kindness as well as horror along the way. This was both an amazing & awful book. I loved it & couldn‘t put it down. It was non-stop action with a compelling story & mystery. It‘s gory but that‘s not my problem with it. ⬇️ (edited) 3y
Texreader For starters, I hated the dog‘s story arc. And I hated the ending. Not because it was a cliffhanger, of course it‘s first in a trilogy, but because of the substance of the ending. Despite the myriad horrible events that took place in book 1, it‘s clear it will get even worse. I‘m not sure I have the emotional wherewithal to continue down this road with Todd without a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. I‘m sure it does, but do ⬇️ (edited) 3y
Texreader I want to go there? This book was an emotional investment. I will have to decide if I‘m ready to put even more emotion into it. So I‘m disappointed. I was hoping this could be one of my favorite books of the year. I can say with confidence, sadly, it was not. #litsyatoz #letterK (edited) 3y

Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness, follows Todd Hewitt, a 12-year-old boy on the run from his dystopian town, a place where men are plagued by the persistent noise of each other's thoughts. On his journey, Todd meets an unexpected friend, and together they learn to survive in this unprecedented world. I would highly recommend this novel to those who enjoy dystopias and science fiction; It is definitely a page-turner right off the bat. (1)

ZariaCrump (2) A theme present in the story is the loss of Innocence, as Todd experiences the harsh reality of growing up. He must very quickly learn to be independent, as well as take care of those around him. 3y

📚📚📚📚 Loved this with two caveats - the dialect Ness uses for the main character, Todd is at first distracting but eventually fades to the background and second, end of chapter 31, part five….makes sense for the plot and emotional development but it still gets me deep down in my nuggets 😭 Also a movie with Tom Holland & Daisy Ridley & Mads Mikkelsen

This is between a pick and so-so. It‘s a sad gut wrenching book. But it could have lost a hundred pages and still be exactly what it was. It took me forever to finish just because of the drudgery of getting through it. I loved Manchee. I wanted to smack Todd and tell him to get over himself. But i also cried for Todd and for Viola. Sometimes I feel like there‘s TOO MUCH ANGST in some books.

MidnightBookGirl I bailed on this book because it legit gave me a nightmare (I could not with abuse of that poor dog). 3y
Moonprismpower @MidnightBookGirl this book just has absolutely no hope which is funny because in the last 50 pgs Viola is all like, “we‘ve got to hold on to hope!”Everything is sad. Every thought, the characters, the action. Maybe that‘s why it was so hard to finish for me. And I agree with you. Todd treated Manchee poorly and the dog couldn‘t understand. He just loved Todd. (edited) 3y
Texreader @Moonprismpower @MidnightBookGirl I just finished reading this book and wanted to read the other posts about it. I really am connecting to y‘all‘s reaction. I read and loved it (so I gave it a pick) but I also hated it so much for the reasons y‘all described. And I agree, too much angst for one book! Not sure I could read book 2. Glad I didn‘t run out and buy it. 3y

Ok, so...I had mixed feelings.

Todd lives in a world with “noise.” This noise is the thoughts of men and creatures. There are no women in his town (the only town), because the same germ that caused the noise caused the women to die. Todd will be a man in a month, on his 13th bday and he‘s looking forward to it. He‘s going about his business when he happens upon a patch of quiet, which isn‘t possible in a world with noise... 👇🏽

#YesiReads

TheBookAddict Had mixed feelings because when he happens upon this “quiet,” we have so many questions. And as Todd gets some answers through people‘s noise we are not shown what info was given in the noise. Throughout the book we hear others‘ noise, but we don‘t see what‘s being revealed to Todd until we‘re about 400 pages in. It‘s a pick because the story was still enthralling and kept moving along, but it was so frustrating that he had answers and we didn‘t. 4y

I haven‘t been this into a story and its outcome in a while, it effing gutted me. I had tears falling down my face as I was pulling into the parking lot of my workplace. I wasn‘t going to listen to this book it sounded too weird, but then I saw the trailer for the movie, it looks good and I have a couple of credits to burn. Was it worth the credit? Hell yes, it was! Do I recommend the audio version? 💯YES

Looking for help! I‘m buying books for my nephews in 8th & 11th grade & want to give one of them this series. Which age would it be best for? I read it years ago & don‘t remember. And any suggestions for the other nephew? I haven‘t seen them since last Christmas & I‘m having a hard time figuring out what they are interested in lately.

LibrarianRyan Tell me a little more about them. This I‘d say either. It‘s a cusp novel. Some other good series started to think about: 8th grade slays by Brewer (vampires are coming back in). Teen Killer club for the 11th. #murdertrending (11). Being that it‘s a new Prime series maybe Stormbreaker by Horowitz. The books start 8th grade okay but age as the teens age. For either age Illuminae. It looks HUGe but it‘s a fast read. 4y
LibrarianRyan You could go classic like The Book of 3 which is the first book of the Pridyan Chronicles (the black cauldron) by Alexander. Or do modern Fantasy with Redwall by Jacques. Both would be fine for either. 4y
LibrarianRyan For your 11th Escape from the furnace. Fantasy about a prison for teens. It‘s modern but feels a but feels a bit steam punk and also a bit like the first GI joe move. But I LOvE it!!! If they like movie monsters there is Dept 19. It has a new world war take on classic monsters like Frankenstein. You could go for Eragon by Paolini. He wrote it when he was 15. Either age appropriate but a bit dense if they are not a reader. 4y
See All 8 Comments
LibrarianRyan The Amulet of Samarkand. It‘s book 1 of the Bartemaus trilogy. Then there‘s the Secrets of the immortal Nicolas Flamel. They have new editions with eye catching covers in stores now. If they like playing fantasy video games try Rangers Apprentice. But be sure to start with the first series. Revenge of the witch was a great movie turned into a horror or movie (seventh son uggghh). 4y
LibrarianRyan For the 11th grade I would also probably suggest classic fantasy like Dune, iRobot, Do Androids Deam of Electric Sleep, or even HG wells or Lovecraft. 4y
LibrarianRyan Okay, I‘ll stop now. If those don‘t sound get kit me up with more info on the boys and I‘ll do a new list. 4y
Valink @LibrarianRyan thank you for all the suggestions! I was so stuck so I‘m glad I have somethings to look into. The 8th grader is such a sweet mush. Into football, cooking, saxophone & building things. I often get him activity books that we can do a project or two from together on Christmas, but I think he‘s out of that phase. The 11th is tougher. Into rap with tons of cursing and recently started weightlifting. Both a little immature for their ages (edited) 4y
Valink @LibrarianRyan this was what my son was in to when he was in HS, though the only one he read was electric sheep. I may get him a few books too. He loved Ray Bradbury so he would often pick his books for road trip audiobooks but I really didn‘t like the narrator he used, so that ruined the books for me! (Currently in his second year of college and reads a mix of graphic novels and very dense books) 4y
