Little Fires Everywhere
Little Fires Everywhere | Celeste Ng
In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned--from the layout of the winding roads, to the colours of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principal is playing by the rules. Enter Mia Warren- an enigmatic artist and single mother- who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the alluring mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past, and a disregard for the rules that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community. When the Richardsons' friends attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town and puts Mia and Mrs. Richardson on opposing sides. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Mrs. Richardson becomes determined to uncover the secrets in Mia's past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs to her own family-and Mia's. Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of long-held secrets and the ferocious pull of motherhood-and the danger of believing that planning and following the rules can avert disaster, or heartbreak.

I read this while visiting my mom on a delayed holiday, so admittedly a story that explores motherhood and daughterhood, loyalty and love hit a little close to home, but I‘d recommend this novel regardless. Sure, there‘s some weirdness (some moments felt contrived on-the-spot to keep the story going) but the characters are like able enough to carry this somewhat whimsical exploration of culture, place and family. Love that it‘s in the 90s.

One of the best things about having more time to read than usual is getting to catch up on all these “buzz books” from the last few years of my library job days. I can finally see what all the hype was about and this book was def worth the buzz. Couldn‘t stop reading/listening! #libby

I enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second half. The character development of the kids (Lexie, Trip, Moody, Izzy, and Pearl) was engaging and I felt like it was just starting to hit it's groove when the book shifts to Mia's plot and I lost steam. The last couple of chapters helped to wrap it up and tie the whole story together, I just struggled through the middle.

Two families are drawn to each other, mothers struggle with parenting, and a carefully ordered community can‘t deal with not being in the right when an adoption gets complicated. Lots to ponder here. Perfect for book clubs.

Holy cow, this book is the definition of plot twists & turns. The descriptive writing was gorgeous; my one complaint is that many of the characters felt a little one-dimensional (except for Izzy). I think this quote from the author‘s note summarizes it well: “Where do we follow rules, and where do we justify breaking them? Do our pasts determine what we deserve in the future? And is it ever possible to leave your past behind?”

LoverOfLearning Fantastic quote. Adding to my TBR! 1mo

Wow, talk about a slow burner. Just as I was getting frustrated with the pace of everything, it suddenly picked up and I couldn‘t stop reading. Out of all the characters I think Izzy was my favorite. Celeste Ng did a wonderful job developing all the characters. Such a good book!

Celeste Ng did a FANTASTIC job here. Her character development and story telling are among the best I‘ve ever read. It‘s a wonderfully woven character study about two families from two completely different walks of life who intertwine. I couldn‘t put it down. Book 42 of 2019

It‘s cold outside & I need to go brush the snow off of my car. I‘m not eager to do this so I‘m procrastinating with this “things that keep us warm” photo. Fires should be well-contained, of course!

What are your favorite hot beverage treats? Although I am a coffee drinker, that‘s an act of necessity! I don‘t consider coffee to be a treat. I do especially love to sip chai lattes while reading. Occasionally, I like to drink hot chocolate instead.

In a weird way, I think the hype surrounding this book made me putting off reading it. I can't tell if it was hipster snobbishness or pleasure delaying. I feel like the dichotomy between the "perfect" suburb mom and the artsy rebel belongs back in the 90s but otherwise it's an incredibly easy read that's deeply felt.

A glimpse of my bedside table. I took everything off, got a new, smaller table at the thrift shop, and still the books pile up. I‘ve finished Little Fires and have to write my final thoughts. Sorry, Sylvia, this might require extra sheets of note paper taped in the back cover. I‘m having so many feelings about how the story played out. I honestly wasn‘t sure I‘d like the book but the characters caught my attention.

"...the thing about portraits is, you need to show people the way they want to be seen. And I prefer to show people as I see them."

This book had great media representation, but average reader reviews. In the end I feel like it was written to become a tv series, so maybe I'd recommend waiting til Hulu releases it next year. If you like crime thrillers, it's kind of like that except without the thrills.

This one really wasn‘t for me. Full of caricatures, and one of the worst sentences I have ever read: “She had seen Pearl watching Trip for months, like a mouse watching a cat, longing to be eaten.” The book raises an interesting question - but doesn‘t deliver on the debate
