I'm generally not a biography/autobiography person but having consumed so much of Trevor Noah's content, I knew I had to give this one a try.
It's just such a beautiful book. A great experience. It had me feeling so many emotions over a span of just few hundred pages. Would highly recommend.
4.5/5🌟
Very insightful. Comedian and TV host Trevor Noah tells the story of his childhood and youth in South Africa at the end of the apartheid and the tumultuous years that followed. As a person of color with an African mother and a Swiss father, he tries to make sense of where he belongs, in a society torn by the absurdities of racism and the political system. His brilliant mother sets the education premises which help him navigate towards success.
The timeline was very hard to follow, however thr timeline was not the purpose of the book. The purpose was to point out how illogical and wrong racism and the systems that uphold racism are. I also learned a lot about Trevor Noah that I didn't know. Definitely recommend.
Getting in some cozy pre-Thanksgiving reading before chaos reigns 🦃📖
Yet ANOTHER low pick for me! TN is funny and insightful without being annoying. I really know nothing about South Africa‘s history so that was interesting to learn just a smidge.
⭐️: 3.5/5
Everyone has a memoir in them and "Born a Crime" proves it. Funny, touching, and insightful, this book has me reflecting on my own life searching for stories to share. 4/5 Stars

One of my all-time favorite audiobooks, Trevor dedicated it to his mother Patricia & credits her with being his “teammate” in life. Such love & respect he has for her! 💙
#MotherSon
I really enjoyed this. There were some sensitive topics including domestic violence but learning his backstory was interesting. I wish there was more information about the transition from poverty to successful touring comedian, but I assume that‘s probably for the next book.
God I love this book SO MUCH. The way he describes everything is so light which is shocking as the story he‘s writing is so significant. He handles each situation with humor, and it‘s an incredible read. Towards the end he describes the difficulties of dealing with an abusive alcoholic and my heart ached. I understand, not physical; but verbal and the fear he felt. The warning signs, the anger he felt as a child. The book is all so beautiful.
Just love my book light. Wear it around the neck.
A quarter through the book, it‘s good so far. The author is 4 yrs younger than me and lived a radically different life than mine. It was a book club pick, nothing I would‘ve picked but I‘m glad I got to read it.
Reading the top book so I can find the happiest place and give it back to my Aunt Debbie and then Born a Crime for Book Club this month and the rest is my book box pick from the library, I will probably read everything but the bottom book. 📚📚
I need to simplify. I'm not finding time to read. I think I need to ditch the puzzle apps on my phone🤔🙄 I liked this book, but it took almost 20 days to read. And now book fair is this week, so I'm not going to find any time soon. 🙃 Spring break, though... that's around the corner.
This was a great read. I don‘t watch much talk show TV, so I wasn‘t really familiar with Trevor Noah outside of the occasional YouTube clip here and there. His account of growing up in apartheid/post-apartheid South Africa, the generational impact on its people, his mother‘s strength, it was all fascinating. Yet at the same time, told in Noah‘s uplifting and encouraging tone. Whether you watch his shows out not, I definitely recommend.
A few of my favorite books that start with B ❤️

Wow, what an inspiring and beautifully written autobiography. Trevor Noah takes us through his life in South Africa, it‘s honest and raw. I‘m so happy I finally got to listen to this amazing book ❤️ Highly recommend!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My husband and I both greatly enjoyed listening to Trevor Noah narrate stories from his childhood. Although at times tackling very difficult moments and traumatic experiences in his life, we appreciated the frankness and humor with which he approached these topics. His mom's grace and wisdom were also especially admirable.

I am so glad I finally took time to read this book. 100% worth the read.
Hilarious. Eye-opening. Shocking. Hilarious again. And a little bit of heartbreaking. Didn't know who Noah was previously, but he had quite the childhood. Pivotal are his relationship with his ever-loving mother & his struggle to find his place in a society fractured by Apartheid. Despite the seriousness of the issues he faced, this memoir is warm & witty & full of positive vibes. The scene at the Jewish school though - to laugh or cry???!
I'm glad I finally read this. I haven't really been following what he's up to but of course he continues to be a South African we love and whose success we're proud of. He does an amazing job of describing the hustle in the townships and the near impossibility of pulling yourself up out of that world. I also found his views on crime very enlightening - white South Africans can be so judgemental and racist about crime, so black and white.
Late to the party... That's me. But really enjoying this.
This is so true!!
So difficult to choose a #TopRead2022 but after changing my mind several times have chosen Born A Crime, especially as stuck in my mind,I want to read it again and it is not usually a genre of books I would choose!
Of course ask me tomorrow and I might give you a different answer, each book is so different.

After four and a half despairing years stranded on the bleak and unforgiving slopes of the unconquerable Mount ToBeRead, it is finally time to dust this one off and let its desperate plea of "Just read me already!" go unanswered no longer!
In other words, I'm starting this one tonight!
Noah is brutally honest when telling you both the tragic and the hysterical.
He's a remarkable person and I am grateful he chose to share his story with the world.
Soubhi!! Thank you so much for this book! It has been on my list forever!! And the little mouse reading the book!! I LOVE it!! Thanks so much for this and for your friendship!!
This book surprised me… I expected it to be funny and at times it was but it had more serious undertone and I am here for it. Super interesting learning about his childhood and how he grew up… I recommend listening to it to get the full feel of this book!
Not only did this totally live up to the hype, it really surprised me. It has a completely different flavor from any of his comedic content, and a completely different flavor from any other content about apartheid I‘ve read before. So glad I finally got to this one! #Booked2022 #AuthorBornInAfrica @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen

I‘m not a great fan of memoirs but I loved this book by Trevor Noah, even better if you can get the audiobook narrated by the author - it was simply brilliant.

I enjoyed this memoir of Trevor Noah's young life in South Africa where he grows up with his indomitable African mother but is both an illegal and misfit in a society where white and black relationships are illegal and the colour of skin is fundamental to your status within all groups. The relationship with his mother is beautifully rendered and Trevor himself is a rebel in a place where life is a constant battle to survive.
The hardest part of reading this book has been learning what apartheid was really like in South Africa.
I always thought it must be hard to be a black child growing up in America, but I never considered what it was like to be a mixed-race child growing up in apartheid South Africa. Trevor Noah tells his own story with grace and humor, yet the truths he speaks hold a lot of pain as well. I much appreciate his sharing very personal stories. It‘s a window into the private world of another person. In writing this story, Noah helps unite us all.
All of the praise this book has received over the years is definitely worth it.
Trevor Noah is a remarkable human being who had to overcome a lot to get where he is today. I love how candid he was with his stories. This book is full of love, humor, loyalty, and determination. His relationship with his Mom really got to me. 💔
If you haven't read this one yet, I highly recommend it.

I‘ve listened to this three times now and I have new takeaways each time. My bookclub had a great discussion last month! #booked2022 ~author born in Africa
I can be a little disconnected from current popular media, so I read this having no idea who Trevor Noah is to Hollywood, comedy or the acting stage. What a power! If there were more of his variety of life truth, poignant snark and raw honesty, I would engage with pop culture more.
There was no putting this book down.

Born a crime tells the story of how a young boy was raised from a poverty stricken, racist area to a well known comedian. The book talks about apartheid and the effect it had on South Africa, it was very tough to read about all the racism they faced. Born a crime is one of the best autobiography‘s I have ever read.
Even better than I expected! Trevor was born during apartheid and was around 5 yrs old when it ended. His birth literally was a crime because his mother is Black from S. Africa and his father is Swiss. His adventures growing up scheming to make money on the black market, DJ ing, going to church ALL day every Sunday. Noah‘s narration is amazing, he does every accent brilliantly. Funny at times, heartbreaking too.
I don‘t typically read memoirs but #readingafrica2022 introduced me to this one. This was one fantastic memoir! Like, I would read/listen again. The fact that Trevor Noah himself read the audio made it even better. It‘s funny, sad, and frankly, unbelievable. Highly recommend.
I‘ve heard about this one. It‘s set in South Africa. I decided to read it for #readingafrica2022
Simply brilliant. Not always a fan of memoirs but loved this book, wonderfully written and excellently read by the author. Despite sone serious messages linked to racism and abuse he still managed to make me laugh out loud on a few occasions. Cannot praise it highly enough. A great view of #southafrica warts and all.
Adds South Africa for #ReadingAfrica2022
Put simply this is a brilliant audiobook and thoroughly recommend it. 💕💕💕
