The Ex
The Ex: A Novel | Alafair Burke
In this breakout standalone novel of suspense in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on a Train, a woman agrees to help an old boyfriend who has been framed for murderbut begins to suspect that she is the one being manipulated. Twenty years ago she ruined his life. Now she has the chance to save it. Widower Jack Harris has resisted the dating scene ever since the shooting of his wife Molly by a fifteen-year-old boy three years ago. An early morning run along the Hudson River changes that when he spots a woman in last nights party dress, barefoot, enjoying a champagne picnic alone, reading his favorite novel. Everything about her reminds him of what he used to have with Molly. Eager to help Jack find love again, his best friend posts a message on a popular website after he mentions the encounter. Days later, that same beautiful stranger responds and invites Jack to meet her in person at the waterfront. Thats when Jacks world falls apart. Olivia Randall is one of New York Citys best criminal defense lawyers. When she hears that her former fianc, Jack Harris, has been arrested for a triple homicideand that one of the victims was connected to his wifes murderthere is no doubt in her mind as to his innocence. The only question is who would go to such great lengths to frame himand why? For Olivia, representing Jack is a way to make up for past regrets, to absolve herself of guilt from a tragic decision, a secret she has held for twenty years. But as the evidence against him mounts, she is forced to confront her doubts. The man she knew could not have done this. But what if she never really knew him?

Another one from #TheVault. (That‘s what I‘m calling my overflowing Kindles.) A very light pick. I figured out the twist pretty early on and found the resolution to be too hasty. Still it was a quick, entertaining read that was more courtroom drama than murder mystery.

TrishB Great name for it 😁 some of mine have been on there for a looooong time! 3y
MicheleinPhilly @TrishB I have some that date back to when I first got a Kindle. So essentially, the Dark Ages. 😬 3y

I got a pic of Dieter yawning and it‘s my fave thing in the world. I‘ve definitely lost some reading momentum, so plugging away, very slowly, on the tagged. Library books are languishing but I will not let it get me down.

Woman chooses to represent her ex in a homicide case. I enjoyed this legal thriller. The ending surprised me. Book 64 4⭐️

Tracyantoon Seems like a conflict of interest-representing your ex...not as much into legal thrillers these days but I believe this is still on my TBR. 4y

It was okay but pretty basic. It was an easy read but predictable. If i can figure out the twist halfway thru the book then there isnt any real shock value to the suspense. I wouldnt read again and it didnt leave me feeling glad that i read it either. I give it a just so so and feel like skipping this read wont feel like you are missing anything.

I loved this book so much! This was a novel that had the reader thinking they knew what was going on and then within a few pages their mind will be blown! Mine was definitely blown! I love a book that just shocks me and has me wondering what I just read! I will be reading every book that Alafair Burke has written and any future novels!

Sigh... perhaps I‘ve read one too many mystery thrillers.

Jack Harris is a widower accused of a triple homicide, in which one of the victims is related to his wife‘s murder from years before. Despite heaps of evidence, Jack is proclaiming his innocence. And his ex-girlfriend is going to help him.

Even if she is starting to have her own doubts.

Fast paced and an easy read, but I figured everything out before even getting beyond the beginning.

Author Alafair Burke is for fans of Law & Order.

Okay, oops, bad picture framing...this novel is by Alafair Burke, and I can call it a pick, because it has an interesting plot, and it reads quickly, but I can only give it about 3.5 stars. Burke has talent: she‘s a good writer who comes up with good plots. It‘s only that in this one, I saw every twist miles before I got there. A lawyer is called to defend an ex she hasn‘t seen in years, and their past gets in the way of her judgment. ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ Predictable? Yes. Readable? Yes, just maybe not Burke‘s best. 5y

It started out strong, then lost me somewhere in the middle. I was slightly disappointed with the writing style and found myself skimming parts. I wanted to find out what happened, but I figured it out way before it was revealed. I still enjoyed the book overall, but was disappointed it wasn‘t as good as I was expecting!

When I started reading this, it was a slow start. I was hoping it would get me out of a "book slump" and it was looking dim. Then I started actually engaging with the characters, who ended up being really likable, even the antagonist. I was not expecting the twists, even down to the last chapter. If you are looking for a good read with an unpredictable ending, this is your pick!

Loved Alafair's voice. A forty-something lawyer finds herself defending her ex boyfriend for murder. He had been nice to her while she was harsh and unfair. She can't believe he is guilty. Cool twists and turns but what made it most enjoyable was the main character, who was just that. A character :)

L'ho adorato ❤

Eh. The mystery wasn't that mysterious, and I felt like all the characters were caricatures instead. The ending was both predictable and felt like it came out of nowhere, which isn't a great combo. Not terrible but there are better thrillers out there.
