I'll Have What She's Having: How Nora Ephron's Three Iconic Films Saved the Romantic Comedy
I'll Have What She's Having: How Nora Ephron's Three Iconic Films Saved the Romantic Comedy | Erin Carlson
32 posts | 16 read | 53 to read
A backstage look at the making of Nora Ephron's revered trilogy--When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail, and Sleepless in Seattle--which brought romantic comedies back to the fore, and an intimate portrait of the beloved writer/director who inspired a generation of Hollywood women, from Mindy Kaling to Lena Dunham. In I'll Have What She's Having entertainment journalist Erin Carlson tells the story of the real Nora Ephron and how she reinvented the romcom through her trio of instant classics. With a cast of famous faces including Reiner, Hanks, Ryan, and Crystal, Carlson takes readers on a rollicking, revelatory trip to Ephron's New York City, where reality took a backseat to romance and Ephron--who always knew what she wanted and how she wanted it--ruled the set with an attention to detail that made her actors feel safe but sometimes exasperated crew members. Along the way, Carlson examines how Ephron explored in the cinema answers to the questions that plagued her own romantic life and how she regained faith in love after one broken engagement and two failed marriages. Carlson also explores countless other questions Ephron's fans have wondered about: What sparked Reiner to snap out of his bachelor blues during the making of When Harry Met Sally? Why was Ryan, a gifted comedian trapped in the body of a fairytale princess, not the first choice for the role? After she and Hanks each separatel balked at playing Mail's Kathleen Kelly and Sleepless' Sam Baldwin, what changed their minds? And perhaps most importantly: What was Dave Chappelle doing ... in a turtleneck? An intimate portrait of a one of America's most iconic filmmakers and a look behind the scenes of her crowning achievements, I'll Have What She's Having is a vivid account of the days and nights when Ephron, along with assorted cynical collaborators, learned to show her heart on the screen.

This felt more like a collection of notes from a hundred interviews with a thousand names and crisscrossing timelines, rather than a book. Especially disturbing was how no editor caught the error of misquoting “daisies are the friendliest flower.”
BUT, I love these movies to death so hearing all the behind-the-scenes stuff was really cool. And it inspired me to watch The Shop Around The Corner for the first time, which is a new fave!

LiteraryinLawrence Bummer. What did they mess up about the line? 8mo
rubyslippersreads You might also want to watch the Judy Garland film, In The Good Old Summertime, also based on The Shop Around the Corner. 🙂 8mo

This was a really interesting look into Nora Ephron's career, specifically her three most famous romcoms. It goes into a ton of detail about the whole production process from the initial concept, to writing, casting, filming, & the repercussions on the film industry as a whole. There were so many names that were impossible to keep up with but despite that it was a pretty easy read. It also gave some insight into ⤵️

I found this in the LFL by my house and had to read it based on the title alone-When Harry Met Sally is one of my favorites. I‘ve seen Sleepless in Seattle and You‘ve Got Mail, both once and a long time ago. This was a fun look at the behind the scenes of getting these 3 movies made, with details about Nora, Meg, Tom and Billy. Now I want to watch the movies again lol

A really lovely look into Nora Ephron's three most well known movies and how they transformed the romcom genre. Carlson writes with a bubbly fondness for the movies I too grew up with.

Nora Ephron‘s trinity of rom coms - When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and You‘ve Got Mail - are some of my favorite movies I never tire of watching. This book takes you on the journey of those movies and how Nora set the stage for the future of rom coms. As someone who can quote every line of these movies, this book was so fascinating as I learned all sorts of backstage trivia none of which dampened my love of those movies.

This was a light and mostly interesting look at Nora Ephron‘s life and film career but the author never really answered the question in the book‘s subtitle (how DID Nora‘s films save the romantic comedy?) so that knocked it down for me. If anyone knows of a book that does explore the history and cultural impact of rom com films let ya girl know!

Just in time for Valentine‘s Day! I‘ve seen mixed reviews of this book, so I‘m tempering my expectations for just some fun movie trivia. I have a feeling I‘ll need to get my hands on You‘ve Got Mail again once I‘m finished...

This was a giant disappointment. Great topic, but lack of a cohesive vision and poor writing made this a one-star read. The author couldn‘t decide whether this was a Nora Ephron biography, an insider look at filmmaking, or an analysis of the romantic comedy, so she tried to do all three. The result was a spare outline of Ephron‘s life, vignettes on her best movies, and lots of name-dropping. No flow whatsoever, but some interesting movie trivia.

manifestsanity There's a really great HBO documentary about Ephron called Everything is Copy. Worth watching. 6y
rubyslippersreads So disappointing to hear that. 😕 6y

Just finished baking chocolate chip pumpkin cookies and have my stack of books ready for the holiday weekend. I purposely chose less taxing titles and think these will be fun. Plus I checked out Gilmore Girls since I‘ve never seen it. 😄 bring on turkey and stuffing!!!

(Edited to add that we‘re celebrating tomorrow so I jumpstarted my prep tonight.)

slategreyskies Gilmore Girls is one of the few tv shows I watch. Did you check out season one? 6y

Spent time at urgent care for breathing, then a long nap as I didn't sleep last night-so nothing much got done & today's soup was dinner instead of lunch.😬It's a (vegan) Moroccan Corn Chowder I put together for a blogging film event, inspired by Secondhand Lions. It's got chickpeas, Israeli couscous & Moroccan spices--really tasty! 🌽🍲😋📚The book pictured is my current read for book tour review this week-it's fun so far. Link to soup recipe👇🏻

Day 1 #AndItsJune #AugustMostAnticipated 📚My #AugustTBR stack, not including e-books, ARCs or audiobooks & my #hpchapteraday & #LOTRchapteraday 😬Out of these I'm most anticipating How to Change a Life, The Doll Funeral & the tagged book about Nora Ephron's movies, but I'm excited about all of them-most are for review. I WILL finish The Boy on the Bridge this month & I'll at least start Farmer Boy as it's my pick for virtual foodie bookclub.🍴📚

MatchlessMarie @DebinHawaii You are stronger than I. I'm so deep in the polygamy its unreal ? Here the "Hawaiian" has ham on it too. I'd rather do straight pineapple or with black olives. ? 7y

#bookmail I'm pretty excited about this #ARC for a book tour review in August. When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, & You've Got Mail are three of my favorite movies & I love books about pop culture & film. I'm also trying my first Halo Top (salted caramel) tonight because my local grocery store gave me a coupon for a free one. Which is good because the $6.49 a pint regular price is ALOT for 🍦! Is it really high here, or is that normal?!😱

tammysue I've never heard of that brand. It's definitely a high price but it sounds like a good deal to me😉 7y
Jess7 It's delicious, and super low calorie for a pint of ice cream. The most popular (and in my opinion best) flavor is red velvet. Hope you enjoy it. I love Halo @whatshesreadingnow (edited) 7y

Lidia OMG I need this book! Sleepless in Seattle and You've got mail are 2 of my favorite movies ever ❤️ 7y
MatchlessMarie 😲 That is pretty high. Ours is 4.64 here in TX. I hear a lot of ppl raving about it though. 7y
LauraJ Same price here. Actually it went up to $7 as soon as it got hot. 7y
LazyOwl I love the cat spoon, super cute. We pay about $7 for the more extravegant brand icecream here. But it is worth it 😏 7y
Simona Spoon❣️😍😍😍😍😍😍 7y
DebinHawaii @whatshesreadingnow @Jess7 @MatchlessMarie @LauraJ @LazyOwl OK, maybe I'm just cheap when it comes to ice cream! 😋🍦🤑😆 It is good. @Simona Thanks! It always makes me smile. 😻 7y
DebinHawaii @DarcysMom I hope you get it! 👍😀@Lidia Me too! They are comfort movies for me. 💜 I've only paged through a little so far but it looks good. 📚👍 7y
batsy Like @Simona I was drawn to that adorable spoon. Then the ice cream. I know there's a book in there somewhere 😁 7y
Lcsmcat Where did you find that spoon?!?! 7y
tammysue Thanks @Jess7 I'll have to check that out next time I'm at grocers. I love red velvet😋😊 7y
tpixie @LauraJ 😩😫😯 7y
tpixie @DebinHawaii cute spoon!! Pricey ice cream - but it supposed to be lower in calories so I guess it's of the specially ice cream they can get away with that? But it is hard to buy a little tub like that for seven dollars when we can get a whole half-gallon for 3 to 4 dollars! 7y
Jess_Read_This 🙌🏼🙌🏼Halo makes Sea Salt Carmel?!!! I have to look for this one. 7y
Jess7 You're welcome. The comparison calorie wise is amazing - it's like 240-380 (depending on flavor of Halo - which is made with stevia not aspartame) for a pint vs 800-1,200 for a regular pint of ice cream depending on brand and flavor. They are able to charge so much bc there isn't really any other ice cream that has all three features: super low calories, made with stevia and still tastes really good. It's about $4.99 at Kroger here 7y
LauraJ @DebinHawaii No, you're not cheap. That's too damn much for ice cream. I stick with Whatever's on sale and good. Food is expensive in Los Angeles. 7y
DebinHawaii @batsy @Lcsmcat @tpixie @Simona Thanks for the spoon love. 😆 A friend brought it back to me from Japan several years ago and it always makes me happy when I use it. 😽❤️ 7y
tpixie @DebinHawaii cool! 🇯🇵🐱 7y
Graciouswarriorprincess Cool book and spoon. I love Halo Top but it is pricey. 7y
Zelma I've noticed ice cream in general has gotten really expensive. All of a sudden, pints are $5 or more. 😬 7y
rubyslippersreads @Jess7 I just found red velvet, and have to admit I ate an entire pint in one sitting! 😱 7y
