"If I am a villain, it's because Peter made me one, because Peter needs to be the shining sun that all the world turns around. Peter needed to be hero, so somebody needed to be a villain."

This is Captain Hook‘s origin story. He begins as a boy infatuated by Peter and content to forever be a child, until Peter and the island turn him into someone full of anger and hurt. He is the protector of the other boys, a surrogate father, and it is Peter‘s malice and spite toward the other other boys that eventually causes Jamie (Hook) to see the truth and break the spell of eternal boyhood.

I'm on the last book of my March #bookspinbingo board. It's a toss up whether I'll finish under the wire lol
I dunno, I guess I wasn't expecting this to go quite so dark. I would have liked something a little lighter. The big reveal about Hook's past was a little much, turning Peter irredeemable. I don't remember the original having any real dark moments, so, while this gritty reboot may be appropriate for other fairy tales, it just doesn't fit with Pan. Fun idea, decently written, but not what I was looking for, nor what I wanted.
The premise was promising, but the execution was spotty. An origin story in which Hook was the original Lost Boy? Sounds wicked awesome! My issues stemmed largely from the fact the author makes Peter Pan a complete sociopath from the start. There is no subtlety here, no complex, interesting characters. You‘re just served a huge bowl of “PETER IS SO EVIL” the entire time. Worst, it wasn‘t really any fun (now I sound like Peter 😂).
4.6⭐️ loved this book. Such a fun twist on the Peter Pan story and on how Captan Hook becomes Hook 🪝. Definitely recommend!
@Nessavamusic Thank you so much for my #CreepyChristmas Swap. I love everything. I am looking forward to.reading Lost Boy as my Christmas Eve Read! Happy Holidays to you and yours! @teebe Thanks for hosting!
Christina Henry is releasing a Sleepy Hollow themed book September 28th. I'm looking forward to this! #newrelease #newbook #spookytale #sleepyhollow #headlesshorseman #horseman
The twist on a classic is wonderful. The beginning was a little slow until you realize what‘s actually going on. The last sentence in the book says it all.
That was an incredible story! I've never been a Peter Pan fan but this really sealed the deal! Peter takes boys to his island for fun and so they won't grow up but who could ever imagine that his reasons are more sinister than plain old fun? Jamie, who was Peter's first playmate, begins seeing things as they really are and loses some of the magic but what does that mean in the long run?

Lunch reading by the bay this afternoon. I was completely unprepared for exactly how depressing this book is!!! Super Lord of the Flies vibes, understandably, but lots of gut punches in the feels at the same time. 😖
Finally getting started on this one and wow, what a first page!!! 👊 Thanking @Sarah83 for this beautiful edition!! Took me long enough to get to it, right?? 😂😂😂
I loved this! Peter is more than an asshole here.. he's an absolute monster and this island of his is a pit of death. So many characters die in some pretty horrific ways. Really interested in reading more of Henry's retellings.
I understand why some persons don‘t like this book, is a slow reading pace and the Peter in this story is way different from the original story. But this is a C. Henry retelling which means it‘s dark and gory. Love it! I can‘t say much, it has sad parts, did I say is gory? I like the twist here. My best retelling by this author followed by Alice, for now. But it is slow. I have been reading slow reading pace books, bc I‘m a slow reader?🧐🤣3.9/4⭐️

I read Lost Boy. I started Never Never and Straight on till Morning but I bailed on both part way through.
@Charityann
March's #fairytalereadingchallenge was my favourite so far! I've been sitting on this a few years and I'm glad I read it, but probably won't read it again.

43 of 2021. A fun Peter Pan retelling. ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
March pick for Peter Pan.
#fairytales #fairytalereadingchallenge
I have always been obsessed with any story involving Peter Pan, so this book was an amazing add to my collection of Pan related books. I loved the perspective of Jamie (Hook) and how you get to see his perspective of Neverland and how he became what everyone knows him to be. A quick read for a nice morning, and a bittersweet ending that I would enjoy reading again.
Was this, I wondered, what it felt like to be a grown-up? Did you always feel the weight of things on you, your cares pressing you down like a burden you could never shake? No wonder Peter could fly. He had no worries to weight him to the earth.
#FairytaleReadingChallenge
I'm really enjoying Christina Henry's dark fairytale retellings. This one is Captain Hook's back story. Peter Pan meets Lord of the Flies. It was excellent. #FairytaleReadingChallenge @Charityann

At first I wasn't sure how I feel about the book - there are some changes to the beloved story about Peter Pan and at first that didn't sit right with me (and, to be honest, I still don't agree with them). But I wasn't able to put the book down and while I may have an issue with it here or there it still means I was drawn in and entertained and that's what reading is all about.
I loved this tale so much. It made my heart ache a little. While I can say that it does not compare to Brom‘s The Child Thief, I will also say that we shouldn‘t really be comparing the two. Each book tugged at different heart strings for me and both support my life long distaste for the boy named Pan. I can‘t believe it took me so long to finally read this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“We were still children, for all that we thought we weren‘t. We were in that in-between place, the twilight between childish things and grown-up things.”
I tried to share the page but when I used the blur filter it turned the image black. Any ideas why this is happening?
Peter Pan, never really say well with me. He felt more selfish and uncaring child. More the characteristics of a gillian then a hero. Henry's re-telling is transformative. Peter is not only a villian, but a predator and violent persona.
The origins of Captain Hook is beyond compelling in Christina Henry's imagination.
I‘m posting one book per day from my ever-increasing TBR. No description. No explanation. Just books to read. Join the fun if you want.
Day 56.

I‘ve never been a fan of Peter Pan as a character; however, I adore Captain Hook. I always enjoy retellings where the main character is Hook and Peter Pan is evil and Lost Boy delivered a nice anti-Peter Pan story. It‘s a quick read and while I wouldn‘t say there is too much of a plot, it is still enjoyable.

1 & 2. Lost Boy by Christina Henry. It‘s not the scariest book ever, but the tension keeps building up until you feel dread yourself. Also, The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe still gives me chills when I think about it!
3. Crimson Peak and Repo! The Genetic Opera are my kind of dark movies, instead of classic horror ones.
4. Skeletons!
5. Items with skeletons/skulls. I also have a collection of Monster High dolls repaints.

#unpopularopinion as I was disappointed in Lost Boy. After the first couple of chapters, I found the story slow until part III. Even then, I found thought it might delve into the hinted darker themes of the original, like responsibility v. freedom, childhood v. adulthood, heroes v. villains. I thought Wicked did a much better job at this. But I found this story focused on entertainment with a smidgen of a Lord of the Flies vibe. 2.75 ⭐️
I almost gave up on this one. I love my Peter Pan stories and I was so looking forward to this one, but everything about this novel screamed first draft. The author repeated sentences or reuses similar ideas. How many times do I have to be told that Peter is evil? How many times about how much he covets James red cloak? Brom‘s Child Thief is superior to this novel in every way and I encourage all to read his work over this book.
What a evil little sh*t! I liked this book. A dark, violent retelling of Peter Pan through Hooks pov. I loved Jamie and the boys. It was pretty bloody and brutal at times but also very angsty and depressing😒 That‘s like 3 books in a row that have sort of bummed me out lol I‘m 💯 reading something light and fun next
Such a dark retelling, but absolutely brilliant. I loved it.

I‘m in quarantine for 2 weeks with limited stuff, so #JoysofJune #readathon is perfect timing. Plus I love this #readathon is low key. Thanks @Andrew65 for hosting! 😀
I want to finish the tagged and then I brought with me a stack of books to read. I‘m just going to see how many I can get through.
a fast but enjoyable read! this reinterpretation of Peter Pan acts as a sympathetic origin story for Captain Hook while painting Peter as a sociopathic antagonist. not as brutal as the cover implies but still very fun. I do wish Henry had taken more time to slow down and explore more of the setting since I wanted to see what other aspects she'd rewrite in this dark fantasy book.
I have been extremely stressed out and neglecting social media (aside from following every rescue possom on Facebook as a coping mechanism) but some great reads are getting me through so I need to show some love. This was Peter Pan meets Lord of the Flies meets Milton and I freaking loved it. My second Christina Henry this year, she is becoming one of my favorite authors.
This was so close to being a pick for me. I enjoyed it, but I felt the ending was a bit rushed.
I did like the darker side to the tale and the fact that the roles of the hero and the villain become blurred.
I do want to read her other books because I'm a sucker for retellings.
I really enjoyed this retelling of Peter‘s story. Peter was always kind of a dick in my eyes so this didn‘t really ruin my childhood or anything lol. Jamie‘s back story really had me in tears there at the end even if I did see it coming. The fault I have is how repetitive Jamie‘s thoughts toward Peter are.

These are the library books I have to read before I can start into my pile of purchased books which is currently at 18 😬
I‘m most excited for Horns but I‘m starting with Lost Boy.
I‘ve always been a little creeped out by Peter Pan, so I really enjoyed this take on his story. I loved it through and through. It was incredibly quick read. I was able to finish it in a few hours. My only wish is that I knew who Nod and Charlie became in the story we‘re all familiar with. For some reason, I‘m convinced that Charlie is Smee.
