Seabiscuit
Seabiscuit: An American Legend | Laura Hillenbrand
The author retraces the journey of Seabiscuit, a horse with crooked legs and a pathetic tail that made racing history in 1938, thanks to the efforts of a trainer, owner, and jockey who transformed a bottom-level racehorse into a legend.

I‘m participating in a readathon that required a book involving a sport. This has been on my tbr for a bit so I decided to get it off my list. Very well researched and dramatically told.

Tamra I really enjoyed this one! I didn‘t realize until after I had read it long it takes her to research & write due to chronic illness. 13mo

The story was good. Horse racing is dangerous and I do not like using animals for human entertainment. This didn‘t help my opinion. The author mostly focused on the danger for the jockeys, but those same dangers go for the horses. But the human jockeys choose to do what they do, knowing the dangers. I was surprised to learn how much those jockeys mistreat their own bodies in order to race. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin Hillenbrand is a very good writer and the descriptions of the races were exciting. I was cheering Seabiscuit on. 3y

Great book! I didn't care about horse racing before reading this book but I'm a huge fan of Unbroken and read it just because Laura Hillenbrand is an amazing writer. In the end I too fell in love with Seabiscuit and had my heart in all the races as Hillenbrand so magically depicted them.

#youresovain | This is one my all-time favorite songs and I‘m going with verse three:

🎶 Well I hear you went to Saratoga
And your horse, naturally, won 🎶

Seabiscuit raced many times at Saratoga Springs during his Depression-era, underdog career and is even memorialized there in statue form. Hillenbrand‘s book is a lovely testament to the horse, jockey, owner, and trainer. The film is fantastic, too.

Bookmail! Two books arrived today from Littens and what joy! Thank you @OrangeMooseReads and @mdm139 ! Hillenbrand wrote a favorite nonfiction book of mine, Unbroken, and Seabiscuit was highly recommended even though I‘m not a fan of the sport. The Children‘s Blizzard looks so amazing but sad. Excited for both. Thanks again!!

I love this author‘s writing. She is so talented in her work in nonfiction. She truly makes the stories come to life and finds the best ways to make every part interesting for the reader. This was a great book about the famous race horse and the making of how he got to where he did.

Amiable I never would have picked this up if it weren't for my book club--and I loved it! 6y

What‘s not to love about this Biscuit of a horse. Touched my heart learning of him and all his quirks, I fell in love with him and in the end he fell in love with everyone around him. This is one of my favorite authors, also loved book Unbroken, I wish the author could write more. Thanks Laura Hillenbrand, your words make Seabiscuit live on in our hearts forever.

I listened to this, and although the narrator didn‘t blow me away, the book was so engrossing that it didn‘t matter. As a kid I loved reading books about horses but didn‘t really have a burning desire to read this one. However, I enjoyed Hillenbrand‘s Unbroken so much that I thought I‘d give this a try. I‘m glad I did because it was such a great underdog story of Sea Biscuit and the people surrounding him. I will read anything she writes.

I absolutely loved this audiobook, and I wish Hillenbrand would write more books. It felt especially appropriate to listen to the recounts of the races, just like most people would have listened to them on the radio at the time. Highly recommend.

Here is Seabiscuit with his jockey, Red Pollard.

Texreader Have you read Unbroken by Hillenbrand? It‘s an amazing book and extremely well written. In the epilogue she explains she has fibromyalgia (I think that was the diagnosis) and how difficult it is for her to write. It‘s so so sad because I think she‘s brilliant and wish she could write many more books. 7y

Saw this misplaced book and it made me snicker. Also, can you even believe I did not buy one single book at Half Price Books today? I‘m trying to buy only from my wishlist these days since I already have so many books at home and I could find no wishlist books. But I did buy a pack of Christmas cards that have books and cats—my two loves—on them. I go to HPB so rarely that I used my Christmas-themed gift card from LAST year to pay for them.

Narrative Non-Fiction at its finest, this was the story of an unlikely racehorse and even more unlikely champion; but he that he was, winning the hearts of Americans during the Depression and becoming a symbol of something greater, heart. He was a "gamer!" This was one of those books I never wanted to end, and savored each chapter. (Image: Detail of photo: Seabiscuit w/George "Iceman" Woolf)

This month is #NonfictionNovember!! All this month, we'll be recommending some our favorite nonfiction picks. First up, the unbreakable Laura Hillenbrand's debut SEABISCUIT. Though you may know her better for UNBROKEN, Hillenbrand's first book looks at an unlikely racing champion, Seabiscuit, and his down-on-his luck jockey. Simple and elegant, Hillenbrand's prose flows seamlessly across the page, making near-perfect storytelling look easy. 🏇😍📚

This book about Seabiscuit encompasses so many different factors, many of which I was completely ignorant about, and I was hooked the entire time.
