"Every Flavia de Luce novel is a reason to celebrate."--USA Today ALAN BRADLEY, AUTHOR OF THE MOST AWARD-WINNING SERIES DEBUT OF ANY YEAR, RETURNS WITH ANOTHER IRRESISTIBLE FLAVIA DE LUCE NOVEL. "[Alan] Bradley has created one of the most original, charming, devilishly creative and hilarious detectives of any age or any time."--Bookreporter It's Christmastime, and Flavia de Luce--an eleven-year-old sleuth with a passion for chemistry--is tucked away in her laboratory, whipping up a concoction to ensnare Saint Nick. But she is soon distracted when a film crew arrives at Buckshaw, the de Luces' decaying English estate, to shoot a movie starring the famed Phyllis Wyvern. Amid a raging blizzard, the entire village of Bishop's Lacey gathers at Buckshaw to watch Wyvern perform, yet nobody is prepared for the evening's shocking conclusion: a body found strangled to death with a length of film. But who among the assembled guests would stage such a chilling scene? As the storm worsens and the list of suspects grows, Flavia must ferret out a killer hidden in plain sight. "[Flavia is] the most intrepid and charming adolescent chemist/detective/busybody in all of rural, post-World War II England."--The Seattle Times "Quirky and delightful . . . Flavia is a classic literary character who manages to appeal to both young and old readers equally."--Wichita Falls Times Record News "Bradley's plot twists and turns delightfully."--Fort Worth Star-Telegram NAMED ONE OF THE BEST MYSTERIES OF THE YEAR BY THE SEATTLE TIMES

Glad that #CloakandDaggerChristmas gave me a reason to get back to this series. It‘s been several years since I read the last one. Fun to be with Flavia again!

Prompt: Santa Baby - read a mystery where the detectives are children

Thanks, @Ruthiella for hosting/organizing! Looking forward to a mystery-packed December🕵️‍♀️ I won‘t get to all of these, of course, but nice to have options. I‘ve also got the graphic novel Bodies by Si Spencer on the way (looking forward to the Netflix adaptation) and tagged, The Drift, Night Will Find You and Poppy Redfern and the Midnight Murders in my audiobook queue so those are possibilities as well 🎧

This is the 4th book in the Flavia de Luce series. I read the first three when they were translated into Norwegian years ago.

In this book a film crew arrives at Buckshaw to film their next film. The vicar decides that this is the perfect occasion to raise funds for the church roof and have the movie stars participating. When the snow starts falling, it‘s decided to have this at Buckshaw. So when a body is found, there‘s a lot of suspects.

Flavia doesn't disappoint! It's Christmas time and Buckshaw has been invaded by a film crew as it's to be the setting of a big movie production. Flavia also has plans to catch Father Christmas in the act. And then, murder! I love Flavia's turns of phrase and her interactions with Dogger & Inspector Hewitt. Perfect for #cloakanddaggerchristmas and #192025 @Librarybelle

Thank you @Dragon for the heads up about this audio book. I‘ve loved Flavia de Luce but never thought to try the audio. Sophie Aldred was just perfect for the voice of Flavia and her sisters (IMO). Exactly what I needed - some light mystery, & a snowy Christmassy one at that! 🎅🤶🎄Like most light mystery series, a lot of the love is for the deepening understanding of the characters over time - I loved being back with them in Buckshaw House.

Ruthiella Interesting! The audio I listen to was narrated by Jane Entwistle, who was also perfect! 2y
Centique Oh that‘s good to know! This is just the one my library system had but I noticed Audible didn‘t have her as a narrator. Flavia deserves good narrators 😋 2y
Dragon So happy you enjoyed this audiobook- my library had Jane Entwistle as the narrator. I must confess I have a bit of a crush on Dogger 💚🐉 2y

Egg bites and iced tea breakfast with Jayne Entwistle reading from this wintery mystery. The estate is rented out to a film company over the Christmas holidays. Naturally there‘s a murder and Flavia is in her element. A fun read especially with such an enthusiastic reader. Two thumbs up for this audiobook

Each of these has been better than the last. I was excited, when I finished the last one, to learn that this one was set at Christmas. It really felt like the Christmas special of a BBC show, like "Father Brown" or "All Creatures Great and Small." I love Christmas and I loved how Bradley used it as a backdrop without being too saccharine.

I appreciated that the plot in this book was alot more concise owing to the fact that Flavia was not traipsing around the village but was confined to her home when solving this crime. It helped the author focus on only a few characters and flesh out some relationships a little more.

Question 4!

#flaviabuddyread

Smarkies She started off as someone who was uppity and entitled. But when you learn what she did during the war, you learn her other facets and perhaps why sheet out on her "face". 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies yeah, it was all just a facade, wasn‘t it? 4y

Question 3!

#flaviabuddyread

Smarkies There was definitely a huge crack in their demeanor in this book. Not sure whether because if was Christmas or whether if we will see some thawing in the future. I am interested in this relationship though - the one between the sisters. Would like to see how it plays out. 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies what confused me is how Feely (or Daffy, can‘t remember) says something to Flavia about “do you really think I hate you?” and doesn‘t seem to understand how Flavia could think that, despite the terrible way the sisters treat each other. I‘m also amazed that Daffy, at 13, teams up more with Feely (17) than Flavia (11) 4y
Smarkies @janeycanuck ya. I remember that exchange. It was odd. Maybe the segregation is more about the time spent with Harriet... And what they can Lord over her? 4y
BridgetteM I feel like we get to see more of the dynamics of the sisters‘ relationship in this book. I liked that! 4y

Question 2!

#flaviabuddyread

Smarkies I think the author used the house well in this novel. This was because the house was the main location of the whole book. Normally the murder happens out of the house - so Flavia has to traipse all around the town. In this case, everyone was in the house so she didn't have to wander anywhere. In fact, that is what I enjoyed about this book. 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies Buckshaw really comes alive in this one. Bradley is so good at writing setting as a character. I really enjoyed the novel being focused on the house, too. 4y
BridgetteM This was my favorite so far! It was a great locked-room mystery. What better place for a locked-room mystery than Buckshaw, with it‘s history practically bursting from every room? 4y

Question 1!

#flaviabuddyread

Smarkies Oh! It never occurred to me to be scared for her regarding her chemistry experiments as I think she has a good handle on her knowledge of that to know what she can do and what she can't. I am generally thrilled when she does talk about it. 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies Same... She seems so knowledgeable and I love the science-y bits. But I wonder if she ever has mishaps we don‘t hear about. And I would love a prequel on how she started in on the chemistry and what learning it all was like! 4y

Thanks to everyone who sent good wishes for my surgery. Recovery is going well, and I‘ve been able to finish this book. It is my favorite Flavia mystery yet. Who is in charge of stickers on books? 😤This one is difficult to remove and of course it‘s right over the title. Pray I don‘t ruin the cover. 😥😅 got this for $1.50 though! Hope you all had a great Sunday, and have an easy Monday! 🥰
