Subtitled ‘A summer tale of 4 sisters, 2 rabbits and a very interesting boy‘. The motherless Penderwick girls (aged 4, 10, 11 & 12) + dad and their dog, Hound, are on their summer holidays in a rented cottage in Massachusetts attached to a mansion and, of course, have adventures. Same vibes as the books I grew up with - though they were set in early C20th UK. This was written in 2005.

A fun adorable read.

I‘ve always loved this series, and it makes me very happy to share them with kiddo. After spending so long on Harry Potter we seemed to blaze through this story! The Penderwick family is delightful and realistic - mature beyond her years Rosalind, the eldest who tries to fill their late mother‘s shoes, snarky Skye who just wants to be independent, dreamy Jane who writes stories and demolishes soccer opponents, and shy Batty and her devoted Hound.

A read-aloud for Beatrix and me. It was well-written and the Penderwick family are lovely but not much actually happens. Mrs Tifton and Dexter were not really so villainous; the Penderwicks only knew Jeffrey for three weeks; and Rosalind‘s behaviour towards Cagney was a bit embarrassing. I am not sure we will continue the series straight away - there are probably more magical (not necessarily involving magic) books to read.

A delightful story about a family vacation at a country cottage. A book that adults and kids will enjoy. I highly recommend.

You you cannot judge a book by its cover. This has a strange storyline about snakes and shapeshifters. It also has animal and child abuse. A very dark read not something I would recommend to any kid I know.

I really enjoyed this! It felt like a retelling of Little Women with whisps of Gone Away Lake, and The Saturday‘s (Elizabeth Enright as influencer?) @IamIamIam you were right! This would have been a favorite with my kids too and on road trips. I‘m so glad it was my #bookspin for March- and bummed I didn‘t get to read it when it was my #doublebookspin in January I think! What an absolutely adorable story!!! I loved every character but Batty was extra special. I can't wait to see what's in store for the rest of the series!!!

I started listening to this on my walk this evening and met a couple of friends along the way. Somehow I missed reading this as a kid.

The penderwicks has also had 2 changes. This Newberry winner was originally a stand alone with multiple years between book 1 and 2, and again multiple years between books 3 and 4. The changes have all be subtitle. I believe the bottom right is the current cover, but all covers are still for sale.

Today, I‘m hoping to get in the last 7 hours of reading I need, to hit the full 24 hours. I have three books, I‘m still hoping to get to for the readathon, but right now, I‘ll be reading the last half of, ‘The Penderwicks‘, a lovely book about four sisters on summer vacation with their Dad & Hound (a loveable pup) & their many adventures! I heard some compare this to a modern ‘Little Women‘, & I can see the similarities.

Had this book been around when I was a little girl, it would have been a favorite. A sweet story about 4 sisters who have a knack for mischief.

There are many children in my life who I will keep this book in mind for when it's time to buy a gift.

I think the title of this book is pristine. The Penderwicks is such a whimsical sounding name. Stories about summer where kids get into more than expected tend to get kids interested in exploration which is pretty great.

This book relates to the wonders and adventures when unexpected trips happen that can occur in real life.

The Penderwicks are four sisters who are all different from each other. Not returning to their original vacation spot, they end up in a new place called Arundel. Being in a new place and meeting new people can bring an adventure to remember whether there may be some trouble or not. I like this story because I am one of four sisters so I found it very relatable. It is a story about their bond and their adventures together.

The book was published in 2005 by Alfred Knopf. It is a Nation Book Award Winner. It is a story about four sisters with a special bond. One summer vacation they find themselves on a beautiful estate called Arundel. Soon the girls are busy discovering the summertime magic at the estate. They meet a perfect adventure companion named Jeffry Tifton who is the son of the estate owner. It is an unforgettable summer.

This story was absolutely charming - I loved it! Honestly, it reminded me of all the classic children‘s novels I read and loved as a kid, so it was a very nostalgic read. I‘m pretty sure our elementary library has the whole series so I‘ll be reading them!

Sooo good! When I was a kid I used to hide my book under the bed and sneakily read it while I was supposed to be cleaning up... this book gave me that sneaky wonderful feeling of not being able to put it down. I can‘t wait to read the whole series.

Lovely, sweet, funny book. Great characters and surprisingly gripping in places.

Lately, at the end of every month, I think it would be fun to share a book stack for the month... and every month I realize I‘ve lent a few out, returned some to the library, gave some away, or some were digital & couldn‘t be in a physical stack... So it finally dawned on me to do a collage instead. Obvious, right?

Sneaking in some reading for #boutofbooks while my 3-year-old who doesn‘t think he needs naps anymore finally gave into crankiness and exhaustion 😴 This is his second position of the nap — it‘s awkward looking, but an improvement over the first one that felt like he was crushing my lungs. 🤷‍♀️

I made it 2/3 of the way through the audio book, but I just can't finish it. It's a cute story, that would probably be great for a younger child... there just wasn't enough happening for it to hold my attention at work.

I read this aloud to my 7 and 9 yr old daughters. We really liked this story of 4 sisters renting a vacation cottage with their dad. I had 2 complaints: 1. I could have done without the storyline about the oldest girl falling in love. 2. The dad really bugged me. He was never there; he just let his 4 kids run wild with zero supervision. And bc I was reading aloud, I hated how he spoke in Latin. I couldn't pronounce any of that! 🙊 But still ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was a perfect summer read to give me a break from the slew of dark, gritty narratives I found myself in the middle of this past week. The characters are well-drawn, the escapades and adventures are fun, and the family quirks are endearing. I definitely have to pick up more of the Penderwick family's adventures!

I love spending my lunch hour reading outside. And this is a perfect, light read for a summer day!

After the aforementioned communist labor camp overload, plus the fact that I'm currently reading American Gods (which is excellent but also gritty and dark), I'm in need of something light and fun. I've pulled these five from my #TBR, all of them work for my remaining #LitsyAtoZ letters, and I'm going to ponder which one to pick up as a palate cleanser after I read my #hpchapteraday. I'm leaning toward The Penderwicks, though...

Nothing says #family like the Penderwick sisters!

Last summer I started a daily read-aloud time for our homeschool. I'd read books about what we studied, poetry, news stories, etc., & a chapter book. Today we finished The Penderwicks & took time to remember the other chapter books we read. The kids also got to rate them. My daughter was much more conservative (purple 🌟s) than my son (🌟=fave, ✔️= Ok, X = didn't like). To my chagrin, Fortunately the Milk was universally panned. 🙁 #raisingreaders
