like the present period, that some of its nosiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far 🩶

I had not read this before although had of course heard the famous first and last lines. Pleased to say I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Set in the time of the French Revolution in both England and France, this story is populated with some marvellous characters, not least Carton, Dr Marnette and Lorry. The plot is a little farfetched; coincidences are rife and the villains are almost caricatures; but I love Dickens nonetheless.
I‘ve read this one before, but not from a 1911 hardback version with a previous owner‘s notes inside.
1. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times
2. That she rarely goes out and has a temper

I really have two favourite books that start with the #lettert. One is the tagged book, which I was introduced to in my grade 11 English class, and my other favourite is To Kill A Mockingbird, which I was introduced to in my grade 10 English class. #alphabetgame
The novel tells the story of the French Doctor Manette, his 18-year-long imprisonment in the Bastille in Paris, and his release to live in London with his daughter Lucie whom he had never met. The story is set against the conditions that led up to the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror.

3rd book completed! Soooo glad I finally read this one and am glad my friend suggested it for our buddy read. The language is so interesting and I always enjoy Dickens' descriptions and real scenes. The end notes were very helpful. @DeweysReadathon @Andrew65 #readathon #deweysapril #20in4

1. More than I used to now that I‘ve realised that my English teachers mostly picked the boring ones 😂
2. I‘m slowly working my way through an audio book of A Tale of Two Cities - I was named after Lucie Manette!
@TheSpineView
A tale set during the French Revolution.
The first two thirds of the books was impossible to follow, the last third was quite good. I am not entirely sure what happened and had to read the synopsis on Wikipedia to really understand what happened in the book.
This one took me longer than expected to read, and I ended up finishing it in the car. I have to say, this was a really good book although I have the feeling that The French Revolution was simplified a bit too much, but that might just be me. Nonetheless, I‘d give this book, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
I‘m going to be experimenting a bit today. I am going to start reading and start a stopwatch to see how long can I read without stopping. Starting with ‘A Tale of Two Cities‘ by Charles Dickens and a nice cup of tea. I have a feeling that this isn‘t going to be as easy as I think it is...

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. I don‘t know why I waited so long to read this classic. It was such a good story! I had to refer to the literary synopsis online often, due to the time and the style this book was written in. After reading this, I will definitely be reading more books written by Charles Dickens.
Dickens‘s “A Tale of Two Cities” has the best #firstline and #lastline of any novel ever written. Don‘t @ me. 😂

In an attempt to get somewhat organized, here is my August #BookSpin list!
Sobering, even dystopian. In Tale of Two Cities, the French Revolution is visible on the horizon when the book opens. Appreciated the full bodied characters for all classes of society. Working class Jerry and Miss Pross, men o‘ business Lorry and Carton, the genteel Manettes and aristocrat Evremonde, all are afforded a fair and full backstory. Note to self: don‘t wait so long between Dickens novels.

After my third attempt in 25 years and reading classics, I can finally say I appreciate this book and understand the psychology that Dickens wanted to share in his writing. Doctor Manette's agony was so realistic, Madame Defarge's #revenge was without any compassion, and Sydney Carton's sacrifice so visceral.
There are some plot points I still don't understand - Cruncher's meanness to his wife or the short paragraph of Lucie's son.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness….
When the story begins it‘s 1775 and as the story changes between London and Paris the years move along too
In the middle Dickens lost me a little bit, but he‘s such a masterful storyteller that he pulls me in again
In the end Dickens shows how children and grandchildren can‘t be held responsible for their parents/ grandparents mistakes, how you can‘t live your life based on hate, how love is stronger than anything and will always win in the end.
Wow, that Dickens sure could tell an enthralling tale. Thanks for the motivation to finally read this classic, @Cuilin !
